Chapter 27: The Truth

Every corridor of the sanctuary looked exactly the same.

Neither the second, third, nor fourth offered any answers to where Raven and the others might be.

Of course, there was always a chance that Godric’s theory was incorrect. That Raven and the others were, in fact, possessed by some monster and his hope was nothing but futile.

The eerie sensation of the sanctuary continued no matter where they went. It was as though something or someone was watching them, or as if the entire structure was aware of their presence, if that was even possible to begin with.

Occasionally, Godric caught Torr looking his way a bunch of times. The look in his eyes offered no explanation of what exactly he was looking for, but Godric’s suspicion of the man only grew stronger.

Valentina’s earlier words still echoed in his mind, and if they were true, then the chances of Torr being here because Astrea told him something were high.

Suddenly, Loris came to a halt.

"This is it," he whispered, pausing right in front of a corner which led to yet another corridor. "This is the eighth corridor."

Heavy anticipation settled over the three of them.

This was the corridor where the supposed exit was meant to be. This was also the place where the hollows normally began to appear and a place Godric wanted to explore more than anything.

The eighth corridor differed from the rest.

It was wider and not rectangular in shape. Its shape looked almost crooked; corners that led to nowhere appeared on its walls, turns that led back and torches that offered even less light.

They moved with caution. It didn’t come from any order or warning from Loris. Instead, it was almost as if all three of them knew not to make too much sound.

It took a dozen meters before Loris stopped at a small corner, and his face almost lit up. "This... this is the exit."

Surprisingly, he didn’t rush toward it.

Instead, he turned to Godric and Torr and spoke with more composure than he had the entire time in the sanctuary.

"Listen carefully, we need to exit all at once. If we miss it, the exit will move to the sixth, then fourth corridor. But if you trace back, the corridors will change shapes, so finding them won’t be easy. Do you understand?"

Godric nodded while Torr took a step forward.

"What’s the big deal? Let’s just get the hell out of here?"

He was about to take another step toward the exit when Godric spoke.

"You can go ahead without me."

Torr frowned as his head whipped around. "What?"

"I can’t leave Raven behind," Godric said, though that was only a small part of the reason.

More than anything, he needed to find out what it was Daren wanted this badly.

"You can’t," Loris stepped forward. "It’s too dangerous—"

Loris’s warning was cut short as Torr spoke up, a red mana circle lit before him.

"Step away from this traitor, Loris."

Before Torr, a large centipede-like creature materialised and crawled across his back.

Godric raised a brow, acting as composed as he could. "Traitor? What are you talking about?"

"Astrea told me what happened in the tent. I knew there was something off about you the moment you showed up. You killed that student because he knew something, didn’t you?" Torr let out a low chuckle, his eyes filling with rage. "You think I survived in this hell without seeing my fair share of schemes and betrayals?"

Loris took a step back, still positioned between Torr and Godric as though he had no idea what was going on and which side to take.

"Does Daren know about this little endeavour of yours?" Godric asked as he summoned his weapon.

Something twitched in Torr’s face. "I am second in command. Disposing of scammy trash like you is under my responsibilities."

’Good,’ Godric thought to himself.

If Daren didn’t know anything about this, then as long as Torr didn’t get back to him, his plan was still safe.

"Well? Are you going to stand there all day—"

Before Godric could finish his taunt, Torr’s beast multiplied, and he threw them right at him.

Godric threw himself to the side, narrowly avoiding the thrown monster, which detonated the moment it hit the wall behind him.

There was no time to recover as Torr’s beast continued to multiply and the man kept throwing them, letting them explode on first impact.

The entire corridor shook from explosions as Loris panicked.

"Stop! Dammit! They’ll know!"

The panicked lieutenant grabbed Torr by the arm, trying to get him to stop and escape, but the vice leader of the settlement shoved the lieutenant to the side, and in that small moment of pause, Godric recovered from his earlier dodges and dashed forward.

Another wave of exploding beasts came at him.

He evaded the first, sidestepped the second, and when the third came straight at his face, he used the wide part of his blade to deflect.

[Duration: 24 Hours.]

At the same exact moment, Loris scrambled from the ground. The leader of this expedition took one final look at the battle unfolding across the eighth floor and dashed into the exit.

Before Godric’s blade could reach Torr and before Torr’s next barrage of exploding monsters could reach Godric, the corridor around them shifted and the exit disappeared from the eighth corridor.

The floor lurched beneath them, throwing both men off balance as the walls rearranged themselves.

Torr rose first, laughing at the sight of a sword lying abandoned on the ground.

"Looks like you lost your weapon." He bent down and picked it up.

"Did I?" Godric climbed back to his feet.

He lifted his right hand, weapon still in his grip, and let a small smile settle on his face.

"Looks to me like it’s still right here."

Torr’s eyes went wide.

But before he could react, the sword in his hand exploded.
