Chapter 28: Pei Yin: You’re Sick

Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Pei Yin: You’re Sick

"Baby, are you inviting me to go to class with you?"

Xi Yu ruffled her hair, kissing the side of her neck again and again.

"Of course I can."

As if afraid she would regret it, the man quickly agreed.

In her peripheral vision, she saw a Star Brain flicker as a blue, holographic screen rose up.

It was set to private, so all Jian Yu could see was a pixelated blur.

Xi Yu’s enthusiastic voice sounded by her ear, "It’s been a while since I’ve been to a classroom. Let me see what classes my Baby has tomorrow."

Jian Yu’s body relaxed.

’I have to admit, I really was being overly paranoid.’

’The things they liked, they would rather share than ever allow to be destroyed.’

’Even though I’m not a ’thing’.’

"So Baby is a Gene Incubation major. That’s really impressive, the top-ranked special admission student."

Xi Yu’s tone was strange.

It was the kind of tone Jian Yu had only ever heard the Director use to coax a three or four-year-old child.

Her ears turned red just listening to him.

The original owner’s experiences were the same as hers, but due to the changes in this world, she had chosen the Incubation major, cross-registered in Information Engineering, and had also picked many electives from other departments.

But in reality, she had listened to her teacher, dropped out for a year before returning to school, and then, at the Director’s deathbed suggestion, chose to study cell biology.

Right before university was about to start, the system bound itself to her.

Jian Yu froze. Weis Lan Noble Academy had already started classes. She was in university now, so that meant the Director...

She opened her chat history with the Director.

"What’s wrong, Baby?" Xi Yu scooped her up in a princess carry and stared into her eyes.

He felt the body in his arms stiffen—and it was right after he’d agreed to accompany her to class.

’So she was just asking, she didn’t actually want me to go.’

’That’s a little annoying.’

"Xi Yu, can you do me a favor?" Jian Yu’s heart was in turmoil after reading the chat history.

Her eyes were slightly red. She shared her screen with Xi Yu and scrolled through the chat log.

"The Director, she..."

"Don’t rush." Xi Yu squeezed her waist, pulling her higher into his embrace.

He grabbed the hand with the implanted Star Brain Terminal and rubbed his chin against her cheek.

His gaze followed the chat history downward.

Most of it was transfer records. The person kept saying "I can’t accept this, keep it for yourself," but the money was never once returned.

The greetings were all the usual lines: "Are you having any difficulties lately? You have to tell me if you are." Or it would be about some poor child who had just arrived at the orphanage and contracted some illness.

Xi Yu glanced down at Jian Yu’s tear-filled eyes. "She scammed you?"

"That’s not the Director." Jian Yu stared at him blankly.

’How could the Director scam me? The Director was rarely with me, but every time I got sick, she would empty her savings to pay for my treatment. The Director was the best person in the world.’

’Two lifetimes, and I’m still just as stupid. I lost another huge sum of money and didn’t even realize someone was impersonating the Director.’

But in the original owner’s memories, the Director hadn’t passed away. In fact, she had personally sent her off on the special ship dispatched by the academy.

Xi Yu shot a sideways glance at the busy Ling Yanzhi, then deliberately looked at Sheng Yue, who was resting beside them with his eyes closed.

His voice was low and raspy. "What does Baby want me to do?"

"Never mind." Jian Yu had calmed down.

The interstellar Star Brain Terminal was even more advanced than a modern computer. It came equipped with the specialized tools needed to trace an IP address.

She pressed her lips together and, using her shallow foundation of knowledge, began to locate the Director’s terminal IP.

Watching the dense strings of characters jump across the screen, Xi Yu regretfully kissed the corner of her mouth. "Baby, you’re really amazing."

He received no response.

"Baby’s so cold to me."

’Her waist is so soft, too. My fingers sink right in. So pliable. If I held her on the experiment table and kneaded her open bit by bit, she’d probably sob with reddened eyes, a mist of tears fogging her vision, until a damp trail finally escaped the corner of her eye.’

His gaze darkened slightly as Xi Yu forced his imagination to a halt.

The light blue panel continuously refreshed with data packet information. All sorts of content—timestamps, source IPs, destination IPs, communication protocols, and more—scrolled rapidly before her eyes.

Xi Yu patted her head. "Planet Number 666. Is this where my Baby is from?"

Jian Yu hadn’t expected the traced terminal IP to be the orphanage. This was completely different from the course of events in the real world.

She had thought that this time, she would find the Director’s daughter—that ’poor woman’ who had impersonated the Director, asked her for money, and then suddenly fallen gravely ill, using the Director’s old favor to keep her entangled.

’With so many special medicines in this world, maybe the Director really is okay?’

She looked up, the rims of her eyes growing even redder.

"I’ve already had someone look into it for my Baby." Xi Yu rubbed his lips against hers, trying to curry favor.

The words had barely left his mouth when a video call came through on his Star Brain.

"Yu?"

Jian Yu never expected to see the Director again in a scene like this.

’So many people.’

The Director was wearing a floor-length red gown adorned with fine Crystal Stones, a drunken flush on her face.

She sat before a long table made of translucent star-rock, her wine glass filled with a drink that shimmered with an aurora-like iridescence.

It was the same for the few men across from her.

When she swirled the glass, Jian Yu could even see fine, fluorescent particles precipitating within the liquid.

"Tsk." Xi Yu’s face darkened as he ended the video call.

Seeing the dazed Jian Yu, his mood improved, and he leaned in again for a delicate kiss.

Jian Yu’s mind was filled with questions. Annoyed, she instinctively turned her head away.

Xi Yu’s expression turned fierce as he crushed his lips against hers.

"Mmph."

She raised her hands to push him away, and out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ling Yanzhi taking off his white coat and washing his hands.

Her gaze shifted, and she saw Pei Yin had also taken a seat on a chair that rose up beside her.

His eyes were grim, as if she had insulted his laboratory.

He kicked Xi Yu’s leg. "That’s about enough."

Xi Yu was unmoved.

Jian Yu couldn’t help but struggle, afraid of provoking Pei Yin.

She passively endured Xi Yu’s kiss, her eyes looking embarrassedly at the ferocious-looking Pei Yin.

Her mind was filled with what the plot had described: the female lead accidentally stumbling upon Pei Yin attaching the tails, ears, and other such limbs and organs from Alien Beasts onto people.

"Gasp."

Her eyes trembled, and her breathing grew difficult.

Sheng Yue suddenly opened his eyes, his gaze clear. "Are the results in?"

"Not yet." Pei Yin ground his teeth, glaring daggers at the shameless couple in front of him.

Ling Yanzhi walked over. "Wait half an hour. There are still a few comparison results that aren’t out yet."

The Red Snake launched a sneak attack, biting Xi Yu.

Ling Yanzhi stepped in and pushed Xi Yu away.

The Red Snake’s childish, doll-like voice rang out in her mind: [Perfect teamwork]

Jian Yu looked up, her breathing ragged.

The tears in her eyes gently fell as she blinked.

She looked like a pitiful, abandoned creature.

Ling Yanzhi’s gaze paused. He bent down and picked her up. "Don’t cry."

His right hand patted her back. A word that was so hard to say spilled from his lips, sounding both simple and intimate: "Baby."

Jian Yu sat on his left arm, her hands wrapped around his neck, and leaned against him, steadying her breathing.

’I’m a little dizzy. Everything looks blurry.’

Xi Yu sat frozen in place. Only after forcing out the Red Snake’s venom did he abruptly stand up.

He reached out his hand.

Pei Yin, with his quick reflexes, blocked him.

"..."

’What am I doing?’

’I just want to flee in panic.’

Sheng Yue patted his shoulder as if he were about to offer his condolences.

The air froze.

Jian Yu felt everyone’s eyes fall on her.

’Healthy relationships are important, of course, but a twisted romance is just so much more exciting.’

’I like it.’

However, right now, Jian Yu was more concerned about the Director.

The Director had been beautiful and gentle. Before she passed away from her illness, she had supported Jian Yu’s work as a game booster and encouraged her to do voice acting for audio dramas.

She had also introduced her to part-time jobs she could do even from the hospital, like dress modeling, hand modeling, foot modeling, and so on.

Jian Yu hadn’t had much real contact with society, but she wasn’t cut off from the internet, and her IQ wasn’t low.

She just didn’t want to think too much about it.

Her lashes lowered as she looked listlessly at Xi Yu. "Did she only scam me?"

"According to the investigation, all of you were basically her tools for making money."

Seeing the light dim in her eyes, Xi Yu said, "My Baby is the most amazing. You earned the most for her."

Sheng Yue: "..."

Ling Yanzhi: "..."

Pei Yin: "You’re sick."
