Chapter 27: Chapter 27: I Didn’t Expect You to Be Even More Clueless Than Me

Pei Yin couldn’t believe another one had fallen.

He looked at Sheng Yue, who had just returned, and couldn’t resist probing him indirectly.

"So Xi Yu was charmed by her after just one meeting, too?"

He tossed the analysis report to the side.

"What are those two thinking? The second she takes off her glasses, she becomes some kind of siren. How is it that everyone falls for her?"

Sheng Yue picked up the report, only to find it wasn’t Jian Yu’s. He flipped through it a couple of times before putting it down again.

He could hear Pei Yin talking to himself.

"No wonder those two sickos get along so well. They even like the same person."

He muttered, "I wonder if they slept together last night. With that petite frame of hers, she doesn’t look like she can handle much tossing around."

Sheng Yue gave him a cold look. "Watch your mouth. If you have something to ask, just ask. There’s no need to beat around the bush or deliberately say such nasty things to me."

"I don’t have anything to ask." Pei Yin fell silent for a moment, looking away.

Given Jian Yu’s physical age, she wasn’t suited for that sort of thing. He trusted Ling Yanzhi to have some self-control, but he wasn’t as confident about Xi Yu.

Once Xi Yu sets his mind on something, there’s nothing he can’t achieve.

That guy has no limits and loves to torment people with knives. Otherwise, Pei Yin wouldn’t have specifically sent him a message telling him not to draw blood.

Among their group, he had the least contact with Xi Yu, but he had a decent read on the other’s impulsive and unpredictable thought process.

"Do you think she’s doing this willingly? Did you see her when you were just there? What was her reaction? Those two... each one is more pathological than the last. What if she can’t handle it..."

As soon as the words were out, Pei Yin added defensively, "They never know when to hold back. If they scare her to death or drive her crazy, I’ll have to endure my Threshold Devouring Period attacks all alone again."

Sheng Yue looked at him, his face impassive. "Then what do you suggest we do?"

"Others can’t help her, but we can," Pei Yin blurted out. "No matter how much power they have or how much the Alliance coddles them, it’s not like there’s no..."

Their eyes met, and he shut his mouth mid-sentence.

"It’s none of my damn business. I can’t beat them anyway. It’d be a thankless effort."

Yin Jiu complained secretly, ’He’s even more stubborn than you.’

Sheng Yue replied calmly, ’Be quiet. Stop letting your imagination run wild.’

If Yin Jiu hadn’t been drilling these ambiguous and easily misinterpreted ideas into his head, his heart wouldn’t be in such turmoil right now.

Yin Jiu seemed to shrink back. ’The longer you suppress it, the more violent the rebound will be.’

His fingers, resting on his knee, curled slightly. Sheng Yue looked over at Pei Yin, who was focused on inspecting the equipment.

He raised an eyebrow slightly. "I didn’t see her, so I can’t tell you anything about her condition. However, I think you’ve guessed wrong. Xi Yu may have fought with Yan Zhi, but they’re both very calm now."

Without looking up, Pei Yin’s expression froze for a second.

A faint smile touched Sheng Yue’s stern face. "Why did you deliberately keep Jian Yu’s condition from Xi Yu?"

"I forgot," Pei Yin said dismissively. "I just wanted to watch the drama unfold."

The levitating chair rose steadily. When it reached nearly four meters, Sheng Yue jumped down.

"You wanted to watch the drama, but you also wanted him to come back and keep Ling Yanzhi in check."

He brushed off his clothes and looked directly at Pei Yin. "I thought you saw things clearly. I didn’t expect you to be even more clueless about the situation than I am."

"What do you mean?"

The conversation ended there as the outer door to the research institute opened.

Sheng Yue glanced at the time. Five in the afternoon.

"Didn’t I tell them to come at nine tonight? What are they doing here at this hour? Do they think this is a school cafeteria?" Pei Yin scowled as he pulled up Jian Yu’s report.

Sheng Yue let out an ambiguous chuckle. "With Xi Yu and the others around, she won’t go hungry."

He moved closer and narrowed his eyes. "Are you sure this report is hers?"

"Not just this one. This one, this one, and this one, too." Pei Yin tidied the files. "They’re all hers."

The strip lighting brightened, and the door switched from opaque to transparent before sliding open to the sides.

Two men and one woman.

Sheng Yue turned, his gaze skipping over Xi Yu’s dark expression to linger on Ling Yanzhi’s face for two seconds.

He lowered his gaze.

He saw that Jian Yu was still in her nightgown, though a plush blanket was draped over her shoulders.

Her hair was down, her eyelashes curled, and her reddened lips were gently pressed together. They were still a little swollen, and the tip of her nose and the corners of her eyes were also red.

Pei Yin quietly walked over and circled Ling Yanzhi.

"If she didn’t want to come, she didn’t have to. It’s not like I can’t go to her. You knocked her out. When she wakes up, I’ll..."

Ling Yanzhi cut him off. "You seem to think you’re far more important than you are."

"I’d beat you to death before I’d knock out my baby," Xi Yu said. He rarely agreed with Ling Yanzhi, let alone used such a cringey pet name.

Pei Yin was simply horrified. "Are you really that far gone?"

Hearing his brother call someone "baby" with a straight face was something he really couldn’t stomach.

Sheng Yue’s own emotions were still in a tangle.

And Yin Jiu began to wail in grief, ’Baby? Baby? BABY!!!’

"..." Sheng Yue rubbed his temples in resignation. ’Don’t distract me.’

Sensing a wave of sadness in her deep sleep, Jian Yu groggily opened her eyes.

Before she could clearly see what was happening, she was pulled into an embrace.

A large hand rested on the back of her head, its warmth spreading through her scalp.

Her chin rested on someone’s shoulder. Her limbs were bundled up, and the fabric against her skin was soft and plush.

"Baby, you were sleeping so sweetly."

A handsome face leaned in and nuzzled her forehead. The voice that spoke was low and husky, laced with a bewitching charm.

Jian Yu became fully awake. She turned her head away as shame washed over her, her face flushing crimson.

Her small movement of avoidance dealt an unintentional blow to a certain someone.

Xi Yu’s expression darkened. He straightened up, staring down at the side of her face, still flushed from sleep.

He moved from behind Ling Yanzhi to stand in front of him. Reaching through the plush blanket, he grabbed Jian Yu by the waist and legs.

Both men were exerting force.

"Give her to me," Xi Yu said, glaring at Ling Yanzhi with displeasure. "You’ve held her long enough today."

Ling Yanzhi slowly released his grip.

Sensing a third point of resistance, he looked down.

The fabric of his shirt was bunched up and wrinkled.

Jian Yu came to her senses and let go.

She looked up to see if he was angry and carefully smoothed out the wrinkles.

"Uff."

Before she could finish smoothing it, she was pulled by the force of his grip and fell into Xi Yu’s arms.

Her legs were pinned, and the possessiveness of the hand on her waist was unmistakable.

Her body was turned in a new direction. Jian Yu looked up, only to be struck once again by two incredibly handsome faces.

Pei Yin opened his arms, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Want me to hold you for a bit, too?"

Jian Yu: "..."

Sheng Yue’s tone remained detached. "He’s disrespectful to everyone."

Jian Yu looked at him and rubbed her eyes.

Ling Yanzhi and Xi Yu exchanged a look, their minds immediately jumping to a shared conclusion.

They interpreted her action thusly: ’She just woke up, so her vision is still a little blurry. She’s rubbing her eyes so she can get a clearer look at the face of the man she likes!’

With a flick of his head, Xi Yu pivoted on his heel, turning Jian Yu away from Sheng Yue.

He turned so quickly that Jian Yu felt a wave of dizziness.

She held her head, trying to remember. ’How did I end up falling asleep?’

After they entered the room, the poison Xi Yu had applied to her hadn’t taken effect.

But Ling Yanzhi’s embrace was broad and so overwhelmingly warm that she had unconsciously wanted to just close her eyes for a moment.

Pei Yin watched, fuming. "Stop fighting over her. I didn’t call you here to watch you two flaunt your relationship in my face."

Ling Yanzhi glanced at the equipment, which was still running. "No results yet?"

He walked over and began operating it himself.

Sheng Yue had been working with Pei Yin all night. Seeing someone take the initiative to share the workload, he simply went back to sitting on the side.

Jian Yu found herself facing a cold, silver-blue wall.

Her head and waist were held in place, preventing her from turning. Her eyes darted around. "What are we doing here?"

"Giving my baby a check-up," Xi Yu said, refusing to let her go.

Jian Yu pressed her lips together.

’So I can’t escape becoming a test subject after all?’

The innocent expression vanished from her face. She leaned back into Xi Yu’s embrace, her eyes cold.

’This research institute is huge,’ she thought, ’even more spacious than the large flat the academy assigned to me.’

She tested the waters, her voice timid. "I have class tomorrow. Can you come with me?"
