Chapter 20: Chapter 20: You’ve Got the Wrong Person
BZZT.
Jian Yu climbed into bed, holding her breath.
It felt as if a crack had opened somewhere in the room, letting a constant stream of cold air seep out. It wrapped around her, a bone-chilling cold that seemed to penetrate her very limbs.
She pulled a wool blanket over herself. Staring at the vast, ice-cold room, she realized it didn’t feel as safe as the small apartment she used to rent.
POP—
A strange sound, like the pop of a cupping jar.
’A Soul Beast? A Primordial Beast? An Alien Beast? Or a Soul Ghost Body that snuck in?’
All sorts of theories flashed through her mind, finally settling on the handsome face that had appeared as F7.
!!!
The young man was slender, with dark gray hair streaked with a few strands of cool-toned silver. His fringe fell across his forehead, half-hiding a sharp brow.
’Another handsome guy who’s over six feet tall.’ Jian Yu breathed a sigh of relief. ’At first glance, he’s someone I know.’
Then she realized she only knew him one-sidedly, and he might be here to cause trouble. She sucked in a sharp breath of cold air.
Before she could think any further, the man outside the door vanished.
Jian Yu’s breathing quickened, her eyes wide with shock.
’Is he here to find Ling Yanzhi?’
A drop of some unknown liquid landed on the back of her hand.
It looked like water, but it was potent enough to knock out an elephant.
’What did I ever do to deserve this? To have F7 use his sneak attack tactics on me?’
A wave of Dizziness washed over her. Jian Yu wiped the drop away with the back of her hand and, a beat too late, struggled to lift her heavy eyelids.
The main door was shut tight. She had no idea when the man had broken in.
Jian Yu’s eyes met Xi Yu’s cold, tea-brown pupils.
The young man floated in mid-air, wrapped in a viscous gloom, his face utterly devoid of emotion.
Eight black tentacles writhed behind him, their barbed tips digging into the surrounding walls like nails.
The sight was so terrifying that Jian Yu’s mouth fell open, but the scream caught in her throat, leaving her utterly silent.
Before she lost consciousness, she couldn’t help but complain internally, ’Why do none of these male leads ever follow the script?’
"You made me... wait for you... for two days and one night."
Xi Yu retracted his tentacles and stood firm by the bedside, his voice hoarse.
The light brushed against his back, casting his stern profile in a play of shadow and light.
Xi Yu didn’t understand why Pei Yin had sent him Jian Yu’s name.
At first, he thought Jian Yu was planning to set a trap for him when he returned to the academy, so he simply marked her as a person to observe.
He had someone run a simple background check on Jian Yu, focusing on who was backing her.
After reviewing the file, he found she had no one behind her at all—just a very ordinary special admission student.
Xi Yu knew that at Weis Lan Academy, the fastest way for low-level students to gain privileges and resources was to latch onto someone of a higher rank.
He guessed that Jian Yu would come looking for him, wanting to depend on him.
One’s environment shapes them. Xi Yu didn’t see anything wrong with taking shortcuts.
But he waited for a long time, and she never came.
Xi Yu was so low-key that no students had noticed his arrival at the academy.
He didn’t usually browse the academy forums. When he heard Jian Yu was here, he became convinced she had mistaken Ling Yanzhi for him.
"You came to the wrong villa. You’re looking for the wrong person."
Xi Yu’s eyelids lowered slightly, his brow furrowed.
"I’m Xi Yu."
He sat on the edge of the bed, a barely perceptible flicker of displeasure crossing his features.
Yesterday morning, he received Pei Yin’s "tip-off" and spent the entire afternoon investigating her.
He had arrived at the academy that morning. He observed Jian Yu from 6:30 AM until 1:30 PM.
During that time, Jian Yu didn’t even have shoes on. She was barefoot, her fair calves exposed, kneeling on a gaming chair as she played on the Star Core Terminal.
And she played for a full seven hours straight.
She had a slender figure and was wearing a knee-length nightgown. Her eyes were moist, her eyelids rimmed with red, as if she hadn’t slept all night.
When she yawned softly, her curled lashes were dampened by the moisture welling in her eyes, making her look pitiful.
In person, she was much cuter and prettier than in the photos his subordinates had found.
’I must be losing my mind,’ Xi Yu thought. ’Staring at someone all morning like this is a complete waste of time.’
He even forgot to look at what was on her Star Core Terminal. It wasn’t until Jian Yu turned it off that he realized he had been fixated on her the entire time.
In the middle of it, he received a Star Brain communication. It was Ling Yanzhi, demanding to know why he had broken into Villa 6. Xi Yu ignored it.
He had a vague guess as to what was going on, but he didn’t want to dig any deeper. That wasn’t the outcome he wanted.
For the past two weeks, Xi Yu had also been at the Alliance. Because he was leaving, he’d left a mess behind, which was why the Alliance had reached out to Ling Yanzhi.
He knew Ling Yanzhi was at the Alliance Center and wouldn’t be back anytime soon, so he decided not to disturb Jian Yu and just quietly observed her.
For as long as Jian Yu dangled her legs in the study, her fair, pale calves swayed before Xi Yu’s eyes.
That is, until Jian Yu took off her bracelet and lowered her head to sniff her collar.
Xi Yu’s Soul Beast began to stir restlessly, its eight tentacles crawling forward as if in a frenzy.
It was his own Soul Beast, yet he had to use a great deal of effort to hold it back.
Compared to Jian Yu, who was blissfully standing on her tiptoes looking for a book in the study, Xi Yu felt a sense of imbalance. He completely unleashed the power of his Soul Beast.
He deliberately revealed his presence, intentionally allowing his Soul Beast’s aura to invade the study.
Jian Yu tried to be clever and use a book to hide her reaction, but he saw her scurry back to her room, her eyes filled with fear.
Xi Yu followed her, feeling an immense sense of satisfaction. The emotion was abnormal and strange, but he chose to let it be.
His thoughts returned to the present. He leaned down, studying the person on the bed up close.
Perhaps because the bed was too large and the room too empty, she seemed small and delicate.
Her breathing was shallow, her lips a soft pink. The warm yellow nightgown made her fair skin look even more lustrous.
Xi Yu reached out and removed her bracelet.
A cool, faint fragrance spread through the air.
He hadn’t been mistaken about the scent.
Two tentacles emerged quietly, striving to climb up her calf.
Xi Yu shot out a hand and grabbed them, his gaze so sharp it seemed to pierce through their cartilaginous limbs.
Her breathing grew heavy, quickened, then quickened again.
Xi Yu stared in surprise at Jian Yu’s tightly pressed lips, his tea-brown eyes filled with disbelief.
’She’s awake?’
He had never failed before.
"Jian Yu."
Xi Yu called her name softly.
There was no response.
...
Jian Yu could feel Xi Yu’s gaze lingering on her face, and it stayed there for a long time.
His presence was too strong—a cold indifference mixed with a certain forcefulness that was especially noticeable in the quiet room.
’Should I awkwardly open my eyes, flutter my lashes, and pretend to be overly startled?’
’Or should I just lie still and see what he does?’
Jian Yu chose the latter.
But in the next second, her hands were seized, raised above her head, and she was pinned beneath him.
Just as she was about to cry out, a hand covered her mouth.
A familiar wrapping sensation coiled around her ankles and wrists, restraining her struggles.
She opened her eyes. They locked gazes. The man’s eyes were ice-cold, his expression terrifying.
The hem of her nightgown was lifted. A large, calloused hand slowly touched her, almost covering the small of her back.
Humiliated, Jian Yu turned her head away.
It caressed, kneaded gently, and squeezed slowly as it moved upward, finally coming to rest on her pale neck.
Xi Yu’s eyes were dark and deep. "You went after the wrong person. The one you were looking for is me."
He propped himself up on one arm, and beneath his other palm, the curve of her slender waist became more defined.
