Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Why Don’t You Dare to Look Directly?

The moment she stepped through the school gates, a clear hint of apprehension filled her eyes. She masterfully conveyed the conflicting emotions of someone about to meet the person she loves.

Finally, she took a deep breath, a brilliant smile spreading across her face. "Julian Hale, I’m here."

"Cut!" the director’s voice called out, and everyone instantly relaxed.

"Director, how was it?" Melody Monroe asked nervously.

This wasn’t her first time in front of a camera. Her love for acting had led her to work as a background actor before, playing roles where the camera would just sweep past her, sometimes not even capturing her face.

She had always dreamed of having the camera focused on her, even for just a second.

"Very good," Director Wallace said with a nod.

The nearby crew members all breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Director Wallace was notoriously strict with his actors. No matter how big the star, if they didn’t meet his standards, he would make them do it over and over again—even if it took ten or twenty NGs—until they got it right.

For Melody Monroe’s performance to actually earn praise from Director Wallace was no small feat!

Raymond Ford secretly clenched her fists. Melody Monroe’s skill was making her feel threatened.

Hailey Paige had no choice but to be impressed; Melody Monroe really had acted well! But comparing Melody’s one-take success to her own numerous NGs made her stomach churn.

"Holly Summers, get ready!"

"Action!"

The director shouted again. Holly Summers hurried over from the opposite direction and bumped into Willow Lynch, who was still lost in thought.

Melody Monroe felt a sharp pain in her shoulder. ’Raymond Ford must have used a lot of force when she bumped into me! It’s just a scene. Did she really have to hit me that hard?’

Because of the collision, everything she was holding scattered across the ground.

"I’m so sorry, so sorry." Holly Summers immediately knelt down, picked up the items, and handed them to Willow Lynch. "I didn’t hurt you, did I? I’m so embarrassed."

Raymond Ford’s expression was perfect. No one would have noticed how much force she had used in that collision just now.

Only Melody Monroe could feel that the bump was intentional, but she had no way of telling anyone.

"It’s fine," Melody Monroe said, shaking her head.

"Are you a freshman, too?"

"I’m a sophomore."

Next up was Raymond Ford’s close-up. As the female lead, after all, she had more screen time than any other character.

Raymond Ford was familiar with the scene, but only she knew that she wasn’t really in the right headspace.

She found that Melody Monroe was great at leading a scene; if you followed her cues, you could get into character quickly. But now, she was supposed to look at Melody’s character, Willow Lynch, with an expression of utter astonishment. The moment their eyes met, however, the clear, intense quality in Melody’s gaze made Raymond feel a pang of guilt.

"Cut!" Director Wallace’s voice suddenly rang out.

Raymond Ford immediately realized that the take was no good. She hadn’t met the director’s standards because she hadn’t managed her emotions properly.

"Raymond, you need to show that you’re stunned by Willow Lynch. That last take wasn’t right. Let’s go again!"

"Sorry, Director. I’ll adjust my emotions," Raymond Ford responded immediately.

"Action!"

The moment Raymond Ford met Melody Monroe’s eyes, her own gaze began to waver after just one second. The shot required her to hold Melody’s gaze, make eye contact, and then reveal a trace of astonishment. That was all.

’This should be an incredibly easy thing for me to do. It’s just a look!’

"Cut!"

Director Wallace walked right up to Raymond Ford. "Raymond, are you out of it today, too? Why can’t you look Melody Monroe in the eye? Just look at her like this—one, two, three—and that’s it! It’s that simple!"
