Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Fighting for a Role
Rose Shaw’s reaction was just as Melody Monroe had expected.
Talia Mercer was stunned. She couldn’t believe Rose Shaw was just going to ignore the issue! Just as she was about to say something, Melody Monroe tugged on her arm.
"Rose, I won’t say a word about this until we have proof. Right now, I just want to find an acting job. Are there any roles left in *Warm Wind Blowing North*?"
"What do you have in mind?" Rose Shaw looked at Melody Monroe, unable to guess her intentions.
She had always pegged Melody Monroe as someone with sky-high ambitions.
She hadn’t even been satisfied when she’d landed the second female lead role before.
"I’ve already gone over the script for *Warm Wind*, so I’m quite familiar with the show. Besides, I’m a newcomer. The most important thing for me is to get a part, no matter how small, and have my work seen so the audience can start to recognize me."
Rose Shaw finished her cigarette, grinding the butt out in the ashtray.
"There’s one role they still haven’t found the right person for. It has less screen time, but if you can pull it off, the impact could be just as great as that second female lead part you had before."
"Thank you, Rose!" Melody Monroe said immediately.
"Book a flight for tomorrow and go straight to the set to find Director Wallace." Rose Shaw stood and headed for the door. When she got there, she suddenly turned to look at Melody Monroe. "Melody Monroe, after this setback, you’ve made me completely re-evaluate my opinion of you."
Melody Monroe stood there silently, waiting for Rose Shaw to continue.
"The path to stardom is paved with flowers and applause, but beneath it lies a bed of thorns. People only see you wearing a crown in all your glory, but no one knows what you’re treading on. As long as your footing is sure, you’ll be fine. But if you fall, you’ll be torn to shreds."
"I understand," Melody Monroe nodded.
Rose Shaw’s words came from the heart.
"As for the dress, I’ll have someone investigate. You must always be on your guard, but never harbor any intention to harm others. If you run into something like this again, then you’d better leave this industry for good."
"Yes."
After Rose Shaw left, Melody Monroe slumped limply onto the sofa.
"Melody, what exactly did Rose mean by all that?" Talia Mercer poured a cup of hot water and brought it to her, clearly still confused.
"The dress incident was a hard lesson. Since someone’s targeting me behind the scenes, we need to be extra careful from now on."
"I’m so sorry, Melody. Today was my mistake. I should have checked the dress carefully before we took it," Talia Mercer said, the realization of her failure dawning on her.
"It’s okay. What’s past is past, so don’t dwell on it. Go book the flight," Melody Monroe said, trying to console her.
"Okay."
Melody Monroe leaned back on the sofa and pulled out her phone. It was already the middle of the night.
’I can’t go back to be with Ian tomorrow. I wonder if he’ll be terribly disappointed.’
"Ian, my little darling, Mommy’s sweet little love, I’m so sorry. Mommy suddenly got a work assignment, so I have to fly straight there tomorrow. I can’t come back and be with you. You won’t be mad at Mommy, will you? As soon as I’m finished, I’ll come right back to see you, and we’ll go to the amusement park and see the giant pandas, okay? You have to be a good boy and eat all your food, eat a little extra for me, okay? Mommy loves you."
Melody Monroe recorded the voice message and sent it.
That way, Ian would hear her voice first thing in the morning.
It was getting late, and she needed to get some rest. After she took a shower, she came out and saw a message from Talia Mercer on her phone. The flight was at nine-thirty tomorrow morning.
She set an alarm, collapsed onto the bed, and was fast asleep in moments.
