Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Left Before Getting Him There

Ethan was already injured, so Chloe’s push made him lose his footing completely. Fortunately, Brooke quickly grabbed him to keep him steady.

Ethan watched Chloe walk away. ’It’s like she really doesn’t care about me anymore.’ A strange, indescribable emotion welled up from deep within his heart.

Noticing that Ethan’s attention was almost entirely focused on Chloe, Brooke spoke up. "Ethan, my sister was really hurt that day when she found out you came to swap the marriage contract."

To Ethan, Brooke’s words meant only one thing: Chloe didn’t help him today because she was still angry about him swapping the marriage contract. She had deliberately taken his nemesis to the infirmary just to spite him.

The strange emotion he’d just felt vanished in an instant, replaced by a cold fury. Ethan sneered. He despised people who played hard to get to try and control him.

"That marriage contract was never hers to begin with," he said. "It was only a matter of time before it was changed back."

When Chloe got back to the classroom, the teacher was already in the middle of a lesson. Everyone’s eyes were on her, sizing her up. News of what happened on the field had spread throughout the entire school in just a few minutes.

The teacher glanced at Chloe but didn’t say a word, continuing the lesson as if she didn’t exist.

Chloe went straight to her seat, and Stella Winters handed back the two worksheets she’d been given. Stella had finished one of them, but the other was still only half-done.

"Chloe, I can’t believe you helped Evan Shaw," Stella whispered. "Are you trying to use him to make Ethan jealous?"

Hearing Stella say the same thing, Chloe realized the impression her old self had left on everyone—as Ethan’s devoted simp—was just too strong. ’It’s going to be a while before they believe I’m really not fawning over him anymore.’

"Haven’t you noticed how handsome Evan Shaw is?" Chloe asked with a serious expression.

"What?"

"Evan Shaw is hot. Way hotter than Ethan Prescott." ’Even though Ethan is the male lead, I think Evan would have been a much better fit for the role. But that’s just how the author wrote it. How else would he be a worthy rival for the protagonist!’

Stella couldn’t help but give Chloe a thumbs-up. She’d thought so for a long time, but Chloe had been so obsessed with Ethan that, as a good friend, Stella could only go along with it.

Brooke didn’t return until just before the bell rang. In stark contrast to how the teacher had ignored Chloe, they gave Brooke their full attention.

’Even though she also just took a male student to the infirmary, the teacher is asking if *she’s* tired. It makes sense, I guess. One student is a disgrace to the class, and the other brings it honor. It’s obvious who to choose.’

As soon as the bell rang, Chloe wasted no time and immediately started on the other worksheet.

After the last few shocks, Stella was no longer surprised to see Chloe working so diligently.

She casually pulled a bag of potato chips from her desk and started munching. Her family had already arranged her future for her—she was going abroad after graduation—so she couldn’t care less about the college entrance exams.

The moment she finished both worksheets, a voice rang out in her mind.

Scholar System: [Congratulations, Host, for completing the task. Memory Value +5, Wisdom value +5.]

And she had to admit, Chloe could feel her mind was much clearer now, the fogginess she used to feel completely gone.

After a moment’s thought, she pulled an untouched worksheet from her desk to test herself. Her problem-solving speed was noticeably faster now. Realizing this made Chloe incredibly happy.

"Chloe, next period is gym!" Stella exclaimed. "We have to cherish it! Every gym class we have is one less before they’re gone for good. They’ll probably cancel it soon so we can focus on prepping for the college entrance exams." The only thing Stella looked forward to these days was gym class.

They called it gym class, but it was really just the school’s way of letting them relax once in a while and improve their physical fitness.

’Gym class?’ she thought. ’In my past life, there was no such thing as gym class during the second semester of senior year.’

When the bell rang, the students all headed to the smaller athletic field for gym class.

When they got to the field, the gym teacher was already waiting. The students were buzzing with excitement. Besides their own, two other classes were also having gym.

"Alright everyone, do some warm-ups, run two laps, and then you’re dismissed for free time." As soon as the gym teacher finished speaking, the students erupted in cheers. "Ms. Cole! Ms. Cole!"

The gym teacher raised a hand. "Alright, settle down. Get to your warm-ups."

While she was warming up, the system’s voice rang out again.

Physical System: [Host, run 1200 meters 5 times to be rewarded with a sprinting skill. You’ll be able to run 100 meters in 6 seconds!]

’Five times? But there are only two gym classes a week!’ She hated dragging things out and preferred to complete her tasks all at once.

Physical System: [Host, you don’t have to run on the track. You can complete the task anywhere you have space. You can also do it all at once. 1200 meters times 5 is 6000 meters. That’s just 15 laps around this track.]

’That, I can do!’

The warm-up ended, and at the sound of the gym teacher’s whistle, all the students started running around the track.

Everyone started out jogging properly, but by the second lap, they had all slowed to a walk.

While everyone else ambled along, Chloe alone was sprinting with all her might. Her unique behavior made her stand out, instantly drawing the eyes of every student.

"You’ve got to be kidding me. Why is she running so hard? Didn’t they say this gym class isn’t for a grade?"

"Looks like she’s trying to blow off some steam!"

"You know, that actually makes sense. You think it’s because she deliberately didn’t take Ethan to the infirmary to make him jealous, but then Brooke took him instead?"

The students gossiped as they watched Chloe run, and soon, even the students from the other two classes had their attention fixed on her. After finishing their laps, everyone sat down on the grass.

"Brooke, did something happen at the infirmary? Chloe looks like she’s totally lost it," a classmate asked.

"If you ask me, it looks more like she’s got a screw loose," Clara Bell sneered. At that, everyone burst out laughing.

Once the laughter died down, Brooke finally spoke. "I don’t know, either. By the time I got Ethan to the infirmary, Chloe was already gone. Only Evan Shaw was there, all by himself."

"What? She was already gone?" the students asked in shock.

"That’s right."

"But you guys left one right after the other! Don’t tell me she ditched him before she even got him there!"

"That’s probably what happened! Man, I suddenly feel so bad for Evan Shaw!"

Hearing her classmates conclude that Chloe hadn’t taken Evan Shaw all the way to the infirmary, all based on her one simple sentence, Brooke was secretly overjoyed. ’This is exactly what I wanted. I’ll mislead them on purpose and make them all think Chloe abandoned Evan halfway there.’

’Besides, I’ve figured Evan Shaw out. He never gossips and mostly keeps to himself. And Ethan will be too humiliated to admit that Chloe chose his nemesis over him. As long as I stick to my story, everyone will believe that Chloe ditched Evan on the way to the infirmary.’
