Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Evan Shaw Settles Accounts with Chloe York
"I bet she’s doing it to piss off Campus Prince Prescott. This looks just like a lovers’ quarrel!" one student blurted out, then immediately clapped a hand over her mouth.
"Brooke, don’t mind her. She just speaks without thinking," another girl said, trying to smooth things over.
"It’s fine. Ethan is Chloe’s fiancé now, after all. It’s normal for a couple like them to have little arguments," Brooke York said. It sounded like an explanation, but she was actually painting Chloe as someone who couldn’t accept her place and loved to throw tantrums.
"How is that normal? You’re the true heiress of the York Family. Besides, what she did was wrong. If you’re going to take someone to the nurse’s office, you should see it through to the end! How can she be so two-faced? What if something happened to Evan Shaw because she wasted his time!" a male student, playing the part of a white knight, couldn’t take it anymore.
After all, Brooke York wasn’t just beautiful, she also had good grades. More importantly, she was the York Family’s heiress. Her future was boundless!
’If I get on her good side now, we’ll still be high school classmates after we graduate. If I ever need her help, she won’t refuse, right?’
The male student’s words earned everyone’s unanimous agreement.
"Exactly. She’s so malicious."
"Besides, Campus Prince Prescott doesn’t even like Chloe York. If she tried to start a fight with him, he probably wouldn’t even give her the time of day!"
"Brooke, you and Campus Prince Prescott are the ones who look like a perfect match."
"Yeah, you’re so pretty and kind—not like Chloe York, who ditches people halfway to the nurse’s office. You and Campus Prince Prescott are made for each other."
Clara Bell listened to the compliments everyone showered on Brooke York, her smile never faltering, though it looked a bit strained. Whether she was trailing after Chloe York before or Brooke York now, she was always just a foil.
"Thank you all for your support. But I think Chloe was probably just confused for a moment. She might even regret it now."
"She’s just rotten to the core. Campus Prince Prescott made it crystal clear he didn’t like her, but she still shamelessly clung to him."
"She wouldn’t even let other girls near Campus Prince Prescott. If anyone so much as got close or even just walked by, she’d go warn them off. And she was always throwing the York Family’s name around to intimidate people. To think she was a fake all along."
"If that were me, I’d be too ashamed to even show my face at this school anymore."
Meanwhile, Chloe York had no idea that while she was running, Brooke York and a group of classmates had already finished their gossip session.
She ended up running six laps. By the last two, she really couldn’t keep going, so she alternated between running and walking.
She flopped onto the ground, and Stella Winters was instantly by her side, concerned. "Chloe, why were you running like your life depended on it!"
"To get in shape."
Those four words left Stella Winters speechless. ’Is this how you get in shape? By running yourself into the ground?’ She had been terrified Chloe was going to collapse. She’d kept a close eye on her, ready to rush her to the nurse’s office the moment she fainted.
"What’s wrong with you? It’s just PE class. Why are you running like a maniac? Aren’t you tired enough already?" Clara Bell knew Chloe must be having a hard time, going from a rich heiress to a nobody overnight, but that was no reason to play games with her health!
"I’m fine! See? Nothing’s wrong with me!" She flopped back onto the grass, gazing up at the blue sky and white clouds. The gentle sun felt warm on her skin. ’Hm? A little hot, but it’s not a big deal.’
A thought occurred to her, and Chloe York called out, "Physical System."
Physical System: [What is it, Host?]
"You said binding with you would give me a healthy body. So, will future rewards be related to physical health?" ’The sprinting and the ability to eat without gaining weight are tempting, but what I really want most are rewards that will guarantee my physical well-being.’
Physical System: [Of course there will be! Things like enhanced immunity, resistance to all poisons, invulnerability to weapons...]
The Physical System’s claims grew more and more outrageous. Unable to listen anymore, Chloe cut it off. "Okay, I get it."
Physical System: [As long as you know, Host! After all, yours truly is the Physical System! Later on, we can even add beauty enhancements! Things like perfect skin, improved eyesight...]
Chloe listened in silence. She was realizing the Physical System was a chatterbox, while the Godly Rich System was aloof and the Scholar System was just by-the-book.
The bell rang, signaling the end of class. Everyone left the small athletic field and headed back to their classrooms.
"Chloe, even if you wanted to blow off steam, you shouldn’t push your body like that." Brooke York walked up next to Chloe, acting like a concerned older sister.
"You’re probably hoping something bad happens to me, aren’t you?"
A student walking nearby overheard Chloe’s words and couldn’t help but chime in.
"Chloe York, what’s with your attitude? Brooke is just being nice and worrying about you. You’re completely taking her kindness for granted."
"Brooke, just ignore her."
"No matter what, she’s still my sister. If I ignore her, Mom and Dad will worry about her and be sad."
’Watching Brooke York put on a show,’ Chloe thought. ’This is exactly the kind of female lead the author created. Swapped at birth, she feels wronged by fate, so after returning, she’s determined to take back everything that belongs to her and make the person who stole her identity pay the price.’
’And these people around her are playing their roles as dutiful NPCs perfectly.’
Back in the classroom, Chloe took a short break, wondering how she was going to finish the rest of her run.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted in the hallway outside the classroom. Evan Shaw’s figure appeared in the doorway.
The students lingering in the hall started whispering. "Evan Shaw’s here! You don’t think he’s here to get even with Chloe York, do you?"
"He must be here to get even."
A crowd of students followed Evan Shaw toward the classroom. Since he was from Class 1, whose classrooms were in another hallway, his appearance here could only mean he was looking for someone.
Evan Shaw stood at the door and looked inside, his eyes landing on Chloe York, who was frowning at a book in her hands.
"Excuse me, could you get Chloe York for me?" Evan Shaw asked a girl in the front row. ’I sent her a text, but she didn’t reply,’ he thought. ’Her phone must be on silent.’
The girl’s face flushed red, and she didn’t dare to meet his gaze. "Okay!"
She stood up and walked over to Chloe. The moment her back was to Evan Shaw, the girl’s shy expression vanished, replaced by an impatient one. "Chloe York, Evan Shaw is looking for you."
At the sound of her name, Chloe looked up at the girl, then toward the doorway. Sure enough, she saw Evan Shaw’s tall, lean figure. They all wore the same uniform, but on him, it somehow accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist.
She stood and walked toward the door.
The two of them went to an open area just outside the classroom. The other students swarmed to the windows and the doorway to eavesdrop, but they couldn’t hear a thing.
Just then, everyone saw Evan Shaw suddenly raise his hand toward Chloe’s head.
"Whoa, he’s gonna hit her."
"Serves her right. Evan Shaw might be aloof, but he’s also known for having a good temper. If even he’s resorting to violence, Chloe York must have really pissed him off."
Listening to the other students, Brooke York was also puzzled. ’Did Chloe really offend Evan Shaw? Did it happen when we weren’t around?’ A possibility began to form in her mind.
