Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Disgraced Brooke York
A smile still lingered on Evan Shaw’s face. The female students passing by blushed when they saw it. They had never seen Evan Shaw flash such a genuine smile before—it was just too captivating!
Not far off, Ethan Prescott walked toward him. Evan Shaw’s smile widened, now tinged with a hint of provocation.
Ethan Prescott stopped in front of Evan Shaw, blocking his path.
One was nonchalant and carefree, the other as cold as frost. They were like two different seasons, clashing yet each possessing their own powerful aura, their own edge and confidence.
The students nearby who saw this scene quickened their pace to get away, only to find a spot to hide and secretly take pictures. In the past, the two had only ever appeared together on the sports field. This was the first time they were seen together anywhere else.
Evan Shaw raised his eyelids slightly, looking rather smug. "What is it?"
"Stay away from Chloe York!" Ethan Prescott warned, staring daggers at Evan Shaw.
"And why should I listen to you?"
"I’m Chloe York’s fiancé."
"So what? As far as I know, Chloe York isn’t the real heiress of the York Family. Your fiancée is supposed to be the other, real one. Besides, you don’t even like Chloe York. If you don’t like her, does that mean no one else is allowed to?"
"Who says I don’t like her? And even if I didn’t, Chloe York is still my fiancée right now. You two should keep your distance."
Evan Shaw scoffed. "You said it yourself, she’s just your fiancée, not your wife. You two are still a few years away from the legal age of marriage. Who knows what might change in those few years?"
Evan Shaw’s words made Ethan Prescott feel a true sense of crisis for the first time. He had always seen Chloe York as a nuisance he couldn’t get rid of. But now, he suddenly realized that Chloe York could leave him at any moment. ’She doesn’t belong to me.’
"Such a good girl. She even gives such nice Bluetooth earbuds just for helping her out. It’s really admirable." As Evan Shaw spoke, he started walking, deliberately bumping right into Ethan Prescott as he passed.
Shoved back, Ethan Prescott stumbled two steps and stood frozen in place, as if his soul had left his body. He only snapped out of it when the class bell rang and headed toward his own classroom.
He was distracted throughout the entire class. It wasn’t until class was over that he found himself at Chloe York’s classroom. The moment he saw Chloe, he realized he had unconsciously walked to the hallway outside her class. Through the window, he could see her studying intently.
When everyone saw Ethan Prescott appear in the hallway outside the classroom, their first thought was that he was there to see Brooke York. After all, he had never come here before.
"Brooke, Campus Prince Prescott is here for you."
"Brooke, hurry and go out! Campus Prince Prescott is waiting for you!"
Hearing her classmates, Brooke York put down her book and looked out into the hallway. Sure enough, she saw Ethan Prescott standing there. She subconsciously assumed he had come to apologize for speaking so harshly to her that morning. Overjoyed, she failed to notice that he was actually looking in Chloe York’s direction.
She stood up and walked out, and her classmates started teasing her as they watched her go.
"Looks like Campus Prince Prescott really likes Brooke! He came all the way here just for her. He’s never once come looking for Chloe York, you know!"
"Ethan Prescott and Brooke York are our school’s Campus Prince and Belle. They’re a perfect match."
Her classmates’ words made Brooke York blush. She quickened her pace out of the classroom and went to Ethan Prescott’s side.
"Ethan, did you come looking for me for something?"
Ethan Prescott pulled his gaze back and turned to look at Brooke York beside him. "I didn’t come for you."
Ethan Prescott’s words were like a bucket of cold water dumped over Brooke York, chilling her to the bone. She already had a suspicion in her heart, but she refused to admit it.
She glanced at her classmates inside, who were all watching with teasing smiles. She didn’t want them to know that Ethan Prescott wasn’t here for her.
"Ethan, I have something to say to you. Why don’t we go over there to talk?"
Ethan Prescott gave her a cold look for a few seconds, then ignored her and started toward the classroom.
Brooke York quickly grabbed Ethan Prescott’s arm. "If you go in there now, have you thought about me at all? I’m the one who’s supposed to be your fiancée." Her tone had taken on a pleading quality. If Ethan Prescott went in to find Chloe York, she would be utterly humiliated.
Meanwhile, the classmates peeking from inside the room reacted as if they were being treated to a drama, letting out soft gasps when they saw Brooke York’s hand grabbing Ethan Prescott’s arm.
"Those two are so well-matched, a handsome man and a beautiful woman. They look like a painting. Some people who steal what isn’t theirs should just stay away," Clara Bell said pointedly.
"Yeah, yeah, they really do look good together. Once they’re in college and reach the legal age, they’ll probably get married right away!"
"Even though Brooke didn’t grow up with Campus Prince Prescott, it seems that if two people are fated to be together, even after being separated for over a dozen years, they won’t be able to resist that destiny once they meet!"
The classmates weren’t quiet about it at all, as if they were deliberately saying it for Chloe York to hear.
What they didn’t know was that Chloe York hadn’t noticed any of this. She was completely immersed in the ocean of knowledge. The first mock exam was over, and the second one would be here soon. Bound to three systems, she didn’t have time to pay attention to other things.
Stella Winters had wanted to say something, but seeing that Chloe York was completely unfazed, she decided not to stick her neck out, lest she drag Chloe into it and disturb her studies.
"According to the engagement contract, Chloe York is my fiancée," Ethan Prescott reminded Brooke York.
"Right, it’s her. I gave up more than a decade of my status as a York Family heiress to her, more than a decade of a good life. Even the man who was supposed to be my fiancé became hers. I’m just asking you to leave me with one last shred of dignity. The students are all watching. If you go in there looking for her, what face will I have left? The relationships with my classmates that I’ve worked so hard to build, the dignity I’ve just barely managed to reclaim—you’ll destroy it all again."
Hearing Ethan Prescott say that Chloe York was his fiancée, Brooke York looked as if she was about to break down. Tears began to well up in her eyes, which were filled with a sense of grievance.
Ethan Prescott hesitated. Brooke York was a transfer student to begin with, and the whole "real and fake heiress" affair had already made her notorious at school. If he didn’t show her some consideration now, he was afraid it might affect her college entrance exams and ruin her future.
"I won’t go looking for her now. But I hope you understand that she was just a child back then, same as you. None of this was her fault."
Leaving her with those words, Ethan Prescott walked away. Watching his retreating back, Brooke York clenched her fists tightly. She didn’t just hate Chloe York; she hated Ethan Prescott, too. ’I hate everyone!’
’None of you want me to have an easy time, so I won’t let any of you have one either.’
Forcing her tears back, Brooke York looked toward Clara Bell inside the classroom, pulled out her phone, and sent her a text: "Post the content I sent you to the confessions page now. After you post it, delete the photo and our chat history."
