Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Face-Slapping the Classmates

Mission complete. Chloe York set down her book and looked up at Clara Bell, the girl leading the group in front of her. She used to be Chloe’s lackey, but now she was Brooke York’s.

Brooke York was also standing nearby, a mocking glint deep in her eyes.

’Even though Brooke York is the story’s female lead, the author wrote her as a very scheming character. She never lets anyone who has wronged her off the hook, not even people like the original Chloe who just took minor advantages of her.’

’She’s by no means a kind person. When she first returned to the York Family, the original Chloe had wanted to get along with her, trying to make up for all the hardships she’d caused.’

’But Brooke hated her. She wanted to destroy the original Chloe’s life step by step, watch her fall from grace, and take back everything that was rightfully hers. Only then could she soothe the years of suffering and humiliation she had endured in that remote mountain village.’

"Of course I remember."

The original Chloe had assumed that since Brooke York came from the countryside, her score would be a zero, just like her own. So she’d made a bold declaration: if Brooke’s score wasn’t also a zero, she would treat the entire class to a big meal.

"But I didn’t lose. I didn’t get a zero, you see. I got one point!"

"You’re just trying to weasel out of it."

"Clara, no matter what, Chloe is still my sister. If she doesn’t want to, let’s just drop it," Brooke York said, stepping in to play the peacemaker.

’Her words made it sound like I was just an immature little sister, and it was okay for me to make a mistake and not admit it.’

"Fine, since Brooke says so, we’ll listen to Brooke. Brooke, you’re so kind-hearted and beautiful!" Clara Bell was quick to shower Brooke York with praise.

Clara Bell was well aware that her own family was merely average. From a young age, she understood that she had to curry favor with the wealthy scions of families like the Yorks, hoping it might one day benefit her own family.

"Not so fast. I really did score one point, not zero, so the last bet is void. But, Brooke York, how about a new one? I dare you to a competition right here, right now. We’ll write out ancient poems from memory. We get five minutes to prepare, and whoever writes down the most wins. The loser treats the entire class to a big meal. What do you say?"

’I have to test out this photographic memory trial card.’

The moment she said that, the entire class burst out laughing.

The tests had just been handed back. The entire class had heard that Chloe York scored a zero, while Brooke York had only lost two points on her essay. For someone with a zero to challenge a near-perfect scorer to a poetry memorization contest—what was that if not a fool’s errand, completely overestimating her own abilities?

"Chloe York, do you even hear yourself? You can’t even memorize a single poem, yet you want to compete against a top scorer like Brooke to see who can write down more? That’s hilarious."

The other students also began to whisper among themselves, but all of them looked at Chloe York with ridicule, thinking she was completely delusional.

Brooke York felt that this Chloe was a little different, like she’d suddenly grown a brain. ’But so what?’ she thought. ’How can someone get smart overnight? If she wants to be my stepping stone, then I’ll let her.’

"Fine, I’ll compete with you. Let’s have the class president prepare the questions and act as the judge. Class President, would that be alright?" Brooke York asked, turning to Henry Ford.

Henry Ford nodded. "I can do that."

After a moment’s thought, Henry Ford selected poems from upcoming lessons, ones they hadn’t yet been assigned to memorize.

He chose six poems in total. They would have five minutes to prepare. To prevent any possibility of cheating, the two girls would complete the challenge at the front of the classroom, one on each side of the podium.

Chloe York looked at the six poems before her. A single glance was all it took for her to commit them all to memory. ’At the same time,’ she realized, ’I even understand what some of the classical phrases mean.’

’Compared to all the time and mental energy I used to spend on memorizing, relying on the System is just incredible. It’s so convenient!’

’I can’t even imagine how good my Memory will be or how high my IQ will get if I reach the Mastermind level.’

Since she had already memorized them, Chloe York pushed the book aside and glanced over at Brooke York, who was still quietly studying the poems.

When the other students saw Chloe York push her book away after only a single glance, they couldn’t help but speculate that she was giving up.

"Is she giving up?" someone whispered.

"Probably."

"Of course she’s given up. She gets a headache just from looking at poetry. She’d be thanking her lucky stars if she could remember a single line," Clara Bell said, crossing her arms. Her eyes, full of contempt, were fixed on Chloe York.

Scholar System: [Host, five minutes remaining on the photographic memory trial.]

"Time for memorizing is up. You may begin writing. You have five minutes," Henry Ford announced. As he finished speaking, both girls picked up their pens and began to quickly write on their papers.

The poems she had only glanced at moments ago now surfaced in her mind with perfect clarity, and she wrote them down, one after another.

"Time’s up. Brooke, Chloe, please put your pens down."

As Henry Ford spoke, Chloe York wrote down the final character. She looked at the six poems written neatly on her paper, a satisfied smile touching her lips as she stood up.

Brooke York also stood up, and the two of them walked to the front to hand their papers to the class president.

Back at their desks, Clara Bell immediately rushed over. "Brooke, you’ve definitely won."

"The results aren’t out yet!"

"Oh, come on! Everyone knows you’re a prodigy. Is it even possible for that girl who scored a zero to beat you?"

"Yeah, Brooke, you’re being too modest. Chloe only glanced at the book for a second. There’s no way she could’ve written down a single poem."

Other students chimed in with similar comments. Brooke York put on a bashful act, then shot a provocative glance at Chloe York, but Chloe didn’t spare her a single look.

Henry Ford first picked up Brooke York’s paper. He saw two poems written on it with neat handwriting. After carefully comparing them to the original text, he found no mistakes.

"Brooke York: two poems, both perfectly correct, with no mistakes," Henry Ford announced.

"Wow, to memorize two poems in five minutes and write them out perfectly... that’s incredible!"

"Brooke, you’re amazing! Any of the rest of us would be lucky to memorize one poem in five minutes, but you actually managed two," Clara Bell said, shaking Brooke’s arm, her voice filled with admiration.

"It’s nothing, really. I used to be able to do three, but..." As Brooke York spoke, her gaze drifted, intentionally or not, toward Chloe York. The implication was clear: she was holding back so Chloe’s loss wouldn’t be too humiliating.

After making the announcement, Henry Ford turned to Chloe’s paper. Suddenly, his eyes widened in shock. He glanced up at Chloe, then quickly looked back down at the paper, carefully checking the poems one by one.

He checked them once, then checked them again. Since Henry Ford still hadn’t announced Chloe’s results, the students grew anxious and started to press him.

"Class President, why haven’t you said how many poems Chloe wrote? Don’t tell me she didn’t write a single one, did she?"

"She didn’t write a single one? Well, you can at least tell us how many words she wrote!"

"Yeah, did she not even write a single word? Then what was she doing with her pen earlier?"

"Was she drawing talismans?"

The class erupted in laughter. Even though they all thought they knew what the outcome would be, they were still eager to see Chloe York lose.
