Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Ethan Prescott Objects

"No way, Grandma. Chloe York is still my fiancée. How can you make my fiancée my sister? That would be a complete mess!"

The first to object was Ethan Prescott. Although he disliked Chloe York and found her annoying, they had grown up together, and she had been his fiancée for many years. How could she suddenly become his sister!

Miss Prescott shot Ethan a glare, and he immediately fell silent. "Don’t you have schoolwork to do?"

"But—" Ethan began, but Miss Prescott cut him off. "I told you to do your schoolwork. Go."

Seeing Miss Prescott’s firm stance, Ethan said no more. He stood up and left the living room, but not before giving Chloe York a look loaded with meaning.

Once he was gone, her expression immediately softened as she turned to Chloe, her kind demeanor returning. "Chloe, be honest with Grandma. Do you want to cancel the marriage agreement? If you do, I will see to it and find someone better for you. If you don’t, then rest assured, you will be the new bride of the Prescott Family and this old woman’s one and only granddaughter-in-law."

Miss Prescott was giving Chloe her assurance. She understood the predicament Chloe was in and was willing to be her support.

’As long as Chloe still likes my grandson, there’s no way the Yorks can cancel this agreement. If she doesn’t, then we’ll cancel it. Among the people I know, there are many young men who are exceptionally talented, from families no less prominent than the Prescotts, and they themselves are more outstanding than Ethan.’

"Grandma, I do want to cancel it. This marriage was never meant for me in the first place. But I don’t want to let the Yorks have an easy time. Alice Cole was the one who made the mistake and switched the babies, but now she’s blaming everything on me and resents me for it. That’s why I don’t want to tell them about canceling the engagement just yet. I want them to stew over it."

’She knew that in the book, Ethan Prescott was the male lead and Brooke York was the female lead. She had no interest in fighting for him, especially since she didn’t like him anyway. Besides, her goal was to change the ending in the book. Whether for the original owner of this body or for herself, the name Chloe York would be a monumental success in this life. She wanted it all—the money and the fame.’

’Alice Cole was so desperate to secure a good marriage for her daughter. Well, Chloe would be damned if she let her get her wish so easily.’

"Good, Chloe. Grandma wasn’t mistaken about you. We may not be bad people, but we’re no saints either. When someone bullies you, you don’t just forgive them."

Miss Prescott supported Chloe’s approach. She had done some investigating over the past couple of days and found that it was clearly Alice Cole who had taken the wrong baby. No one had even blamed her for the mistake, yet she had the nerve to turn around and blame Chloe for stealing her daughter’s good life.

"I’ll have a word with Ethan’s parents when they get back. After all, they were the ones who arranged this with the York Family. But don’t you worry. They listen to me, and they will only cancel the engagement when you give the okay."

"Okay."

Miss Prescott arranged for a car to take Chloe home, and Chloe accepted all the gifts.

The moment Chloe left, Ethan rushed back downstairs. He sat across from Miss Prescott and asked impatiently, "Grandma, what did you talk about with Chloe? Did she agree?"

"Do you want her to agree or not?" Miss Prescott retorted.

"How should I know? Mom and Dad are the ones who arranged it. Whatever they say, goes!" Ethan scratched his head awkwardly, conveniently dragging his parents into the matter.

’Even though she hadn’t spent much time living with Ethan, he was her own grandson. Besides, a woman of her age could easily tell that Ethan actually had a soft spot for Chloe.’

"That’s not what you were saying earlier," Miss Prescott said pointedly. "Weren’t you the one who dragged me along to cancel the agreement?"

At the mention of canceling the agreement, Ethan looked uncomfortable. "Oh, come on, Grandma. That’s because I thought it was Brooke who saved you. Besides, you have no idea how annoying Chloe used to be. Who would’ve thought she’d be so..." Ethan trailed off, suddenly unsure how to describe the Chloe of today.

"I see. In that case, Grandma is just trying to help you," she said. "If Chloe agrees to be my granddaughter, she’ll be your sister. Then you’ll be free to be with that... Brooke girl. Isn’t that the perfect solution?"

He should have been happy to hear that, but instead, Ethan felt nothing but agitation. He asked anxiously, "Grandma, so did she agree or not?"

"Well..." Miss Prescott paused deliberately, feigning distress. The hesitation was enough to make Ethan jump up and move to the seat beside her. "What is it, Grandma? Did she agree or not?"

Seeing how anxious her grandson was, Miss Prescott stopped teasing him. "She said she would go home and think it over. I suppose she might agree, or she might not. It’s her choice!"

Hearing this, Ethan breathed a small sigh of relief. It wasn’t set in stone yet. That subtle reaction did not escape Miss Prescott’s notice.

’Looks like my grandson is having a change of heart,’ she thought. ’Just as I expected. That child, Chloe, is so sensible and dependable. That... what’s-her-name... Brooke, can’t compare at all.’

After getting out of the car and thanking the driver, Chloe went into the house, completely unaware that someone was watching her from a second-floor window.

Brooke York saw Chloe get out of the car. She also saw that the person in the driver’s seat was an older man.

She drew the curtains, in an excellent mood. Sitting at her desk, she spun happily in her chair. Even the homework problem she had been struggling with for over half an hour no longer seemed so frustrating.

She picked up a pen from the desk and twirled it happily, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Chloe York, oh, Chloe York," she muttered to herself, "I knew something was up with you these past couple of days. So, you went and found yourself a sugar daddy!"

"It looks like this sugar daddy is what made you so clever all of a sudden. What ever will I do? I know your little secret now!"

"Hmph. Skipping your evening study hall to go fool around all night. Not like our Brooke. She came home ages ago and has been studying obediently in her room!"

Sitting in the living room, Alice Cole rolled her eyes as she watched Chloe walk in.

By now, no matter what Chloe did, Alice was convinced she was bad to the bone and utterly detestable. If it weren’t for her own reputation, she would have kicked her out immediately.

"I can’t help it, I just have so many friends here. Unlike Brooke, who has none... Oops," Chloe feigned an apologetic tone. "Silly me, I forgot. Brooke’s friends aren’t here, are they? Where could they be? It’s such a mystery!"

Stunned that Chloe would dare to be so sarcastic, Alice shot up to her feet, her face flushed with anger. She pointed a finger at Chloe. "Chloe York, don’t you get cocky! Our Brooke will be staying here for the rest of her life. And you? Once you finish your college entrance exams, you might just have to leave. As for where you’ll end up... that will depend entirely on our mood."

Just then, Brooke York came down the stairs. "Mom, maybe Chloe was just studying at a classmate’s house. I even saw an older man drop her off just now!"
