Chapter 8: Chapter 7: Gift
After watching him sign, Yvonne Lowell took the contract and went upstairs to wash up, relieved. She had just worked up a sweat.
After freshening up, she came back downstairs. She and her brother sat on the sofa, each occupied with their own thing. They didn’t speak, but the atmosphere was surprisingly harmonious.
When Mr. and Mrs. Lowell finished breakfast, Yvonne Lowell handed them their gifts.
"Nola, when did you go out to buy presents?" Wendy Sutton asked, looking at the gift boxes with some confusion.
"I didn’t. I had them delivered. Hurry and open them! See if you like what’s inside."
Charles Lowell received a Jade Ring, while Wendy Sutton received a set of blue diamond jewelry.
Wendy Sutton cradled the jewelry set, unable to put it down. "This jewelry is gorgeous! I love it so much. Thank you, Nola."
"I’m glad you like it, Mom. Next time I find something beautiful, I’ll buy it for you."
Caleb Lowell thought to himself, ’How could a jewelry set worth over 400 million *not* be beautiful?’
"The ring is a perfect fit, and the quality is first-class. I’m going to wear this all the time now. Having a daughter really is the best. I raised three sons and never got a single decent gift." As Charles Lowell spoke, he kept shooting sidelong glances at Caleb Lowell.
Caleb Lowell pressed the bridge of his nose. ’So all the gifts I usually give are considered trash, huh? They’re clearly worth seven or eight figures, okay? Though, I guess they are missing a zero compared to this...’
Harrison and Yancy Lowell came downstairs then, a little shocked to see everyone gathered in the living room.
Harrison Lowell walked right up, grabbed Yvonne Lowell by the shoulders, and looked her over with a pained expression. "Nola, it’s only eight o’clock! Why are you up already?! Don’t pick up our big brother’s bad habit of waking up early! It’s no good!"
"So she should learn from you and sleep until noon every day?" Yancy Lowell shot him a sidelong glance.
"You can’t talk! We came down at the same time!"
Yancy said quietly, "I was up all night solving problems. And you?"
’Damn it! I can’t win this argument. So frustrating!’
Seeing a box on the table, he deliberately changed the subject. "What’s this? Why is there a box just sitting here?"
"It’s a gift from Nola. Unlike some people who stay up all night and sleep all day. Forget gifts, we don’t even see a gift box from them." Charles Lowell’s airy voice drifted over from behind him.
Harrison Lowell froze. ’Oops, big mistake. I picked the wrong target!’
"Ahem, Nola, do I get one too?" Harrison Lowell asked, blinking at her frantically.
Yvonne Lowell found this amusing. "Of course. Everyone gets one."
She took out his gift and handed it to him. Judging from the shape of the box, it was likely another piece of jewelry.
He unwrapped it and took a look. ’Hm? This looks familiar. Isn’t this the brooch I designed? It was supposed to be one of a kind, but I’ve never even worn it.’
’So this wasn’t taken from the collection room, but swiped from my own walk-in closet?’
"Woohoo! A brooch handmade by Master Y?! I remember this was only mentioned briefly on their official website. A not-for-sale item, the only one in the entire world! Tsk, tsk... look at that signature logo, it’s gorgeous! Nola, how on earth did you get it?!" Harrison exclaimed in constant admiration.
’Bro, your choice of words is a little... questionable...’
"Oh, we collaborated on something before. She gave it to me as a gift," Yvonne Lowell said, unconsciously touching her nose.
"Ahem. Ahem, ahem. AHEM."
Everyone looked up. It was Yancy.
He looked at Yvonne Lowell, his expression a little strained. "Nola, what about mine?"
"Here," Yvonne Lowell said, tipping her chin toward the large box. "The rest of what’s in that case is all for you."
Yancy’s eyes lit up as he pulled out a gift box with his name on it.
Compared to the others, this one was indeed oversized.
He opened it to find the complete published works of his idol, the mathematics virtuoso Professor Spencer—and every single book was personally autographed!
"Thank you, Nola!" Yancy clutched the books and headed upstairs without a second glance back.
’Yep, he’s a total bookworm who only has eyes for his studies...’
’At first, Yvonne hadn’t even recognized what they were. It took her a moment to remember. That old man had been stuck on a problem, and she’d just happened to pass by after class and casually gave him a hint.’
’After he solved it, he insisted on sending her a full set of his autographed books.’
’I don’t get it. I was nice enough to help him with a problem, and this is what he does... What a weird habit. It’s not like I’m a math major.’
’Tsk, tsk. Every single gift tailored perfectly to the recipient. At this rate, you can’t even tell if I’m the Lowell or Nina Jennings is.’
Just then, Harrison noticed two large boxes in the corner. "Nola, what are these? More presents?"
"Mm, those are for the family estate. We’ll take them over later."
Harrison said conspiratorially, "Can I sneak a peek?"
"Only if you can put it back exactly as you found it," Yvonne Lowell said with a raised eyebrow.
"On second thought, I’ll just go get some breakfast, hehe. I can see it when we get to the estate, anyway," Harrison said with a laugh, scurrying off to the dining room.
Once everyone was ready, they prepared to set off.
When they got to the garage and Harrison saw her "Little Black," he started freaking out all over again.
"Nola, is this... is this the ’Voice of the Night’?! Let your big bro take it for a spin, what do you say?" Harrison started rubbing his hands together greedily.
"Go ahead if you want. Ask Caleb for the keys."
Harrison was confused. Harrison was shocked. Harrison did not comprehend!
"It’s your car! Why do I have to get the keys from Caleb?!"
Caleb tossed him the keys. "Because I was the one who drove it home yesterday."
Since Mr. Lowell planned to drive, Caleb took the passenger seat, while Mrs. Lowell and Yvonne sat in the back.
That left Yancy and Harrison staring at each other.
Finally, Harrison grabbed him. "Tsk, lucky you, kid. You get to experience your big brother’s amazing driving skills."
"Actually, I think I could probably squeeze in over there," Yancy tried to protest.
"Squeeze in where? You go ahead and try. See if Mom doesn’t kick you right out of the car."
Hearing that, Yancy resigned himself to his fate and got into Harrison’s passenger seat.
Harrison didn’t forget to pat the steering wheel and post to his private social media feed.
[Who’s the first person in all of Kingsland to drive this car? Who else but me?!]
’His private chat groups were all close friends and other rich kids. This didn’t count as flaunting his wealth, nope. At most, it was just a little showing off.’
’Hehe, I’m such a genius.’
Sure enough, his post attracted a chorus of envy and jealousy, along with a flock of brown-nosers.
Nolan Crawford went so far as to video call him directly. Harrison glanced at the caller ID and had Yancy answer it.
"Yancy? Why is it you? Where’s Lowell the Second?"
Yancy sighed and turned the camera around. "Brother Shane, he’s driving."
The moment he saw the car’s interior and the logo on the steering wheel, Nolan Crawford lost it.
"You’ve got to be kidding me! Lowell the Second, you’re actually driving it?!!"
Although the Crawford Family wasn’t as prominent as the Lowell Family, Nolan Crawford’s paternal aunt had married into the Lowell family, so the boys had all grown up together and spoke very informally with one another.
Harrison shot a glance at the screen out of the corner of his eye. "What, you think it’s a fake? Honestly, though, it’s just okay. Not much different from the cars we usually drive. Four wheels, a couple of doors."
"Damn it! Stop humblebragging! I saw that car yesterday! How do you know the owner? Introduce me! Let me get a feel of it too, come on!" Nolan Crawford’s huge face filled the entire screen.
"Ah, well, the car belongs to our Nola. If you want to touch it, I can ask her for you."
Nolan didn’t immediately register the name ’Nola’. He froze for a second, then it hit him. Yesterday, the Lowell Group had officially announced they’d found their "little white fluffball." That same girl was also the secret owner of Pluto, and now it seemed she was connected to Tidalview, too.
’Tsk, he’d met that "little white fluffball" when they were kids. She was so soft and adorable. He’d just asked her to call him ’big brother’ once and got beaten up by all four of the Lowell brothers for it.’
’And the fifth one, Adrian Lowell, who was just a toddler who couldn’t even walk straight, had peed right on him!’
’When she went missing, his aunt had come home in tears, begging his grandfather to send people to help with the search.’
Snapping out of his reverie, he asked, "Hey, Lowell the Second, when are you going to bring our little sister out to meet everyone?"
"Get lost! She’s my sister! We’re on our way to the family estate right now. I’ll talk to you later when I have time. Hanging up, bye." As he spoke, he frantically signaled to Yancy with his eyes.
When it came to their sister, the two brothers always shared a strange, unspoken understanding.
Nolan Crawford was left clutching his phone, wailing on his sofa. But he didn’t forget to leave a comment on Harrison’s post:
[Heh, you’re the world’s number one sister-moocher.]
When Leo Grant came downstairs, he saw a writhing organism on the sofa.
"What’s with the dramatics?"
Hearing his voice, Nolan Crawford shot up. "Bro, remember that ’Voice of the Night’ we saw yesterday morning?"
"The one that came out of the house across from us?"
"Yep! Guess who owns it?"
Leo Grant sat down on the sofa, not even sparing him a glance. "I know it’s not yours."
"I know that! It belongs to the Lowell family’s little fluffball—ah, no, I mean, the young miss who just came back yesterday!"
Hearing this, Leo Grant simply raised an eyebrow, not saying a word.
Nolan Crawford was still babbling. "What do you think she’s been doing all these years? She’s nineteen, and she’s the secret owner of Pluto. Even if Tidalview isn’t hers, she’s got a major connection to it. And the most important part is, she owns my dream car!! What do I have to do to have dreams that good..."
’The Lowell’s eldest daughter, huh?’ He thought back to the Little Marshmallow who used to pick Caleb up from school, and the trending topics he’d seen last night. ’She’s a bit thinner now, but still just as cute.’
