Chapter 34: Chapter 33: How Do You Know Without Trying?
Leo Grant had spent ages psyching himself up, trying to forget what just happened, but he was still a little embarrassed when he came out and saw Yvonne Lowell.
Yvonne Lowell, who was leaning against the sofa playing on her phone, looked up and was immediately captivated by his appearance, her eyes fixed on him.
Leo Grant froze for a moment, thinking she was still dwelling on what happened earlier. He sat down beside her a bit awkwardly. "Is something wrong?"
"You’re really handsome," Yvonne Lowell said, propping her chin on her hand and smiling at him.
Leo Grant breathed a silent sigh of relief. ’Thank goodness...’
"And your stamina seems pretty good, too," Yvonne Lowell added meaningfully.
’Damn it! There’s no escaping this.’
Leo Grant’s expression was hard to describe. After a long pause, he finally managed to say, "How would you know if you haven’t tried?"
He regretted it the moment the words left his mouth. Though she often teased him, had he gone too far with that comment? He didn’t know how to salvage the situation and looked a little helpless.
Yvonne Lowell’s eyes lit up. ’Hmm? What’s this? Did I corrupt him? I suddenly feel so accomplished! This is way more fun than fighting!’
’But wait, aren’t you basically saying you’re no good?!’
"You have a point. So, can I get a trial run? The kind with a seven-day, no-questions-asked return policy for quality issues." Yvonne Lowell straightened up and leaned closer to him.
’There it is. I knew it, I just knew it! What was I even afraid of?!’
"In your dreams," Leo Grant said irritably, poking her on the forehead.
Yvonne Lowell pouted. "Fine, I admit it. Not only am I beautiful, but my dreams are beautiful too."
Leo Grant was about to say something, but her phone rang, so he clamped his mouth shut.
Seeing the caller ID on the video call, Yvonne Lowell was a little speechless. ’My second brother is terrified I’m going to run off.’
She swiped to answer. "What’s up, Second Brother?"
"Yvonne Lowell! You lied to me?! You ran away?! How could you do this to me?! Do you have any idea how upset I was when I came home and you weren’t there?!" Harrison Lowell’s frantic accusations poured from the screen.
"I—"
"No need to explain. I get it. I get it all. I’m just the outcast in this family! Nobody wants me around!"
"That’s not—"
"Not what? Don’t try to argue! I asked Nanny Warren. She said you left right after I did. You won’t even pretend for my sake anymore. The difference between being loved and unloved is so obvious! If you’d even waited until Wednesday to run away, I wouldn’t have been mad!"
’Huh? Really? Is that okay? Should I leave on Wednesday, then?’
Seeing that he was about to continue his endless rant, Yvonne Lowell felt helpless and cut him off by yelling his full name, "Harrison Lowell! Can you just let me finish?"
"Fine, talk. I’d like to see what kind of excuse you can come up with that’s good enough to convince me!" Although her shout had intimidated him, Harrison Lowell tried to act tough.
"I’m out right now, but I’ll be back tonight. I didn’t run away!"
"Hah! I knew... Huh? You didn’t run away? Hehe, Nola, I knew you wouldn’t have the heart to leave your second brother all alone. What I said before about not being mad if you left on Wednesday was a lie, okay? Don’t take it seriously. Where are you? I saw you didn’t take the car. Want me to come pick you up? Are you coming home for dinner? I can have Nanny Warren make some of your favorite dishes?" Harrison Lowell slammed on the brakes and quickly tried to get back on her good side.
Yvonne Lowell gave him an exasperated eye-roll. "I’m eating out. I’ll be home after. No need. Hanging up."
After hanging up, she noticed Leo Grant sneaking glances at her from the side and shot him a glare.
’Figures. All men are the same.’
Leo Grant rubbed his nose awkwardly. "Ahem, is something wrong?"
"It’s my second brother. He took on some family-style reality show that has to be filmed at home. He said that since our oldest and third brothers aren’t around, if I’m not there either, people will think he’s not well-liked in the family. So he’s worried I’ll run off instead of doing it with him," Yvonne Lowell shrugged helplessly.
"What’s the show called?"
"Something like *Happy Family*, I think. No, I have to see who the investors are. If I can add some capital, I’ll throw in some money and see if we can change the name to something like *An Artist’s Daily Life of Solitude*." Yvonne Lowell picked up her phone and started searching for information.
The moment he heard the name, Leo Grant started to panic. That sounded like a show under his company, and he was the sole investor! He’d even approved it himself!
He cleared his throat. "I don’t think that’s necessary."
But Yvonne Lowell had already found the show’s poster. At the very bottom, it read: Produced by Starmoon Entertainment, exclusively sponsored by Grant Group.
She looked up at him. "Starmoon Entertainment? Produced? Grant Group? Exclusively sponsored?"
"Is that so? What a coincidence. I don’t seem to recall," Leo Grant said, his guilt showing.
Yvonne Lowell narrowed her eyes. "No wonder you tried to stop me. Well, well, so the culprit is you."
Leo Grant’s face was calm, his eyes sincere. "I honestly didn’t know. Silas Lynch probably thought it had potential and approved it for me. I’ll dock his pay when I get back."
Silas Lynch: ’Heh. Go on, play dumb. No one’s better at it than you.’
"Hmph, give me a break, you scheming businessman!" Yvonne Lowell bumped his arm with her forehead.
Leo Grant didn’t pull away. Instead, he raised a hand to rub her forehead. "How about I have them change it to *An Artist’s Daily Life of Solitude* right now?"
"No, don’t. My brother already went to shoot the promo photos today. No need to make a fuss."
Leo Grant looked at the girl before him, amused. She seemed to have infinite patience for her family. Though she complained, she never seemed to be truly angry with them.
"So, would Director Lowell consider making an investment? It only costs nine bucks, and we can split the profits fifty-fifty. How about it? With Director Lowell and Superstar Lowell participating, I’m sure the viewership ratings will be sky-high," Leo Grant said suggestively.
"No, thanks. But since I have to accompany my brother to film this show for the next half-month, I’ll have to neglect you for a while," Yvonne Lowell said, raising an eyebrow and pretending not to understand his meaning.
Leo Grant’s face darkened for a second. ’Damn it! How could I forget about that... I should have just changed the show’s name!’
"Harrison isn’t a child. Can’t he just film it himself? It’s not like they’re short one person without you," Leo Grant said, annoyed, squeezing her fingers.
"I can’t. I already promised. I was planning on moving out early, but he’s blocked my escape route." Yvonne Lowell playfully traced his palm with her finger.
Leo Grant glanced at her, silent. Was that a hint of grievance in his eyes?
"What? This show is your company’s. Besides, it’s not like you miss me that much usually."
"That’s only because you won’t see me. I’ll go back and have them cancel Harrison’s contract."
"You will not, or I’ll punch you!" Yvonne Lowell threatened, shaking her fist at him. She reached out and manually turned his head away. "And stop using your good looks to commit crimes. Haven’t you ever heard that distance makes the heart grow fonder?"
"But it doesn’t say if that’s a close distance or a far one. What if a certain someone forgets all about me after half a month? Then who will this poor, innocent soul who’s lost his virtue cry to?"
