Chapter 15: Chapter 14: Afraid He’ll Affect My Performance

Seeing Yvonne Lowell hang up, Adrian Lowell, who had come looking for her, walked over. "Sis, it’s time for dinner."

"Okay, coming," Yvonne Lowell replied with a smile.

The two walked inside side-by-side. Adrian Lowell hesitated for a moment before asking, "Sis, I just overheard you talking about a child and medical fees. Did something happen?"

"Oh, it’s nothing. I was just joking with a friend. An old-timer trying to act cute, calling himself a kid."

Adrian Lowell nodded and didn’t say anything else.

But inwardly, he was thinking, ’What kind of friend doesn’t even have five thousand yuan? Sounds like a moocher trying to scam her. Hmph.’

At the dinner table, Grandpa Lowell asked, "Nola, do you have any thoughts on the date for your return banquet?"

"Grandpa, I’m free anytime," Yvonne Lowell answered after a moment’s pause.

"How about next Saturday, then? Is that enough time?" Grandpa Lowell asked, looking at her with a meaningful gaze.

"No problem. It’s just that I’ve never organized a banquet before, so I’ll have to trouble the elders."

Grandma Lowell immediately made the decision. "Good, then it’s set for next Saturday. The venue will be right here at Lowell Manor. Grandma will make sure everything is perfect for our precious girl. And everyone better clear their schedules for that day."

Everyone nodded in agreement. How could they refuse? It’s not like they wanted to get a beating, even as adults.

"We’re going all out this time. Invite the second-tier families, too. You all can handle the guest list," said Grandpa Lowell.

Her younger aunt spoke up. "I can take care of the guest list. I have the most free time in the family. By the way, Nola, do you want to invite any of your friends?"

"I have a few. Five or six invitations should be enough. Thank you, Auntie," Yvonne Lowell replied after mentally running through a few names.

"Done. We’ll finalize the design tonight, and I’ll get you some blank invitations tomorrow."

...

That evening, everyone decided to stay the night at Lowell Manor.

Yvonne Lowell had just washed up and was lying in bed when she saw a message from Leo Grant.

A sly smile touched her lips, and she immediately started a video call with him.

He answered almost instantly. The man on the other end was still in a suit, and the background looked like a study.

"Hey Gorgeous, why are you still working so late?"

Leo Grant’s gaze darkened for a moment as he looked at the beautifully smiling girl on his screen. She was lying on her side in bed, and the arm exposed to the light was dazzlingly pale.

"Isn’t it so I can free up more time for my date with Miss Lowell tomorrow?"

Yvonne Lowell pouted. "So now it’s my fault? Making you work overtime."

"Of course not. It’s because my work efficiency is too low, and yet I can’t stop thinking about seeing you sooner." Leo Grant’s deep eyes stared at her without blinking.

"And another thing! Tomorrow isn’t a date. It’s you taking me to dinner to apologize for scaring me!" Yvonne Lowell was the type who, if you gave her an inch, would take a mile.

Leo Grant raised an eyebrow. "So, Miss Lowell is agreeing to give me her schedule for tomorrow?"

’Crap! I miscalculated! CEOs really are all ruthless! Not that I count—I’m just a hands-off boss.’

"Ahem, I suppose I can reluctantly have a meal with you then," Yvonne Lowell said, her eyes darting away.

"Then I must thank you for gracing me with your presence, my lady. Shall I pick you up tomorrow?"

Yvonne Lowell picked up a lock of her hair and gestured with it in front of the screen. "Are you that impatient to see me?"

"I am. So, give me a chance?"

"No need. I have something to do tomorrow afternoon. I’ll just head to the restaurant myself when I’m done."

Leo Grant touched his nose, a little unnaturally. "You won’t be able to get into the place I booked by yourself. Why don’t you come find me at Grant Group when you’re done?"

’Dude, do you even hear yourself?! Besides, your face is practically screaming ’I’m a liar.’ I believe you, my ass!’

Seeing Yvonne Lowell just staring at him without a word, Leo Grant leaned closer to the screen.

"Can you?"

’Tsk, trying to seduce me, are we?! Still, I could never get tired of looking at that handsome face.’

"We’ll see. I’ll let you know when I’m done. If there’s still time, I’ll head over."

Leo Grant propped his chin on his hand and nodded. "I’ll wait for you at the office."

"Alright, I’m hanging up. You should get some rest. When you get older, you have to take care of your health. Staying up late will make you ugly and bald, you know. Good night, Gorgeous~" After saying her piece, Yvonne Lowell hung up with a CLICK.

Leo Grant was left staring at the blank screen, his mind racing. Was he old? Little Marshmallow was only nineteen, six years younger than him. Okay, maybe he was a little old. But didn’t she like his face? And he wasn’t bald! Crap, he couldn’t figure it out. ’Whatever,’ he thought. ’Time for bed. These files can be Nolan Crawford’s problem.’

...

The next afternoon, Yvonne Lowell drove out in her Little Black.

She pushed open the door to a private room in a teahouse. Inside sat a middle-aged man with an imposing aura, but the moment he saw her, his face bloomed into a wide smile.

"I swiped this top-grade Maojian tea from the old man. Have a taste," the man said as he poured her a cup.

Yvonne Lowell tapped the table three times with her index and middle fingers before picking up the cup and taking a sip.

It was refreshing, with a sweet aftertaste that was fresh and faintly bitter. It was indeed good tea.

"Not bad. Didn’t get beaten up for it?"

The man didn’t mind the tea-tapping gesture. She had saved his life, and he had shamelessly wormed his way into being her friend despite their age gap. In the past, when she had poured tea for the old man of his family, the old man had returned the gesture as an equal. For him to be treated as her peer was more than enough.

"I told him it was for you. What could he do?"

’So he’s using me as his shield, huh? Over a couple ounces of tea?’

"You shouldn’t drink too much green tea. Don’t you know what’s wrong with your own body?"

The man coughed lightly twice and changed the subject. "When did you get back? You didn’t even tell me. If our old man hadn’t mentioned it, I still wouldn’t know."

"A couple of days ago. He’s the only one who keeps tabs on me day in and day out."

"I never would have thought you’d turn out to be the Lowell family’s daughter. If back then you hadn’t..."

Yvonne Lowell cut him off. "If I hadn’t been kidnapped back then, I might not have reached the heights I have today, and I might never have met you."

Her words left the man speechless. A complex mix of heartache and admiration filled his eyes.

"That’s true. The return banquet will probably be a huge affair, right? Is the date set?"

Yvonne Lowell took two invitations from her bag and handed them to him. "Next Saturday, at Lowell Manor. Make sure you come, and bring some people with you. As for his lordship, it’s better if he doesn’t. I’m afraid he’ll interfere with my performance."

"What do you mean? Good heavens, you’re not planning to wreck your own party, are you? Are the Lowells not treating you well?" The man was stunned, not understanding her meaning.

"No, they’re treating me very well. I’ll tell you the specific arrangements later." Yvonne Lowell finished the last of her tea and stood up. "I’m leaving."

She glanced at the time. It was still early. ’Might as well go visit him at Grant Group,’ she thought.

She sent a message to Leo Grant and drove toward the Grant Group headquarters.
