Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Return to Kingsland
Aurelia, Kingsland Airport.
A young woman wearing a mask pulled her suitcase behind her as she walked out, revealing only a pair of upturned, fox-like eyes.
She tapped the Bluetooth earpiece in her ear. "I’m in Kingsland. But, Old Man, do I really have to go through with this family reunion?"
"What do you think? You’re already in Kingsland. If you don’t go through with the reunion, what’s the point of you being there?"
A roguish smile played on the young woman’s lips. "Don’t I have my own businesses here? If it comes to it, I can just go teach a few classes at Kingsland University. I’m a busy woman, you know."
A booming roar came from the other end. "You have to do it! Otherwise, you can get your ass back here and train the newbies! I gave you two choices, and you picked this one yourself. Either come back, or go to Kingsland for the family reunion. It’ll keep you from running wild all day!"
’Tsk. Good thing I took the earpiece out early, or I’d be deaf.’
"Alright, I get it." Without waiting for a reply, she ended the call.
The Old Man: ... ’So high and mighty. So impressive. Only you would have the nerve to hang up on me.’
Outside the airport, a man in sunglasses, a floral shirt, and baggy shorts stood next to a bright yellow LaFerrari.
Behind him stood two bodyguards in black suits, holding a banner.
It read: Grand Welcome for Boss Lowell’s Inspection Tour of Kingsland.
When Yvonne Lowell saw the spectacle, she instinctively pulled her mask up higher and immediately turned to walk in another direction.
Zachary Jacobs wasn’t about to let her get away. He pulled out a megaphone, the kind street vendors use, and yelled, "Lowell, over here! You’re going the wrong way! Lowell! Hey, the woman in the white shirt and mask!"
Feeling more and more eyes on her, Yvonne Lowell had no choice but to hurry over to him.
She walked right past him into the car, leaving her suitcase at his feet.
Zachary Jacobs grinned triumphantly, tossed the suitcase to the bodyguards, and slid into the driver’s seat.
As he started the car, he asked, "Lowell, you hungry? We could grab a bite, then hit the town for drinks and karaoke—the whole nine yards?"
"Straight to Tidalview," Yvonne Lowell said, typing on her phone.
Zachary Jacobs whined, "Huh? Come on, Lowell. You finally make it back, you have to at least give me a chance to throw you a proper welcome-home party."
"Didn’t we just see each other last month?" Yvonne Lowell shot him an annoyed glance. "And stop picking up all sorts of nonsense from Nina Jennings. Why don’t you try learning something useful for a change?"
"You got it. I’ll be sure to tell Nina your exact words and ask her to stop being a bad influence on me."
After a pause, Zachary Jacobs asked, "So, are you really going to go through with this reunion with the Lowell Family?"
Yvonne Lowell leaned back languidly in her seat, shooting him a sidelong glance. "What’s the alternative? You want to go back to HQ and train the newbies for me?"
"Hell no," Zachary Jacobs immediately shot back. "I’d rather stay at the office. I just can’t stand idiots..."
Yvonne Lowell gazed at the scenery rushing past the window and said nonchalantly, "I’ll go check it out. The Old Man gave a direct order, so I’ll just treat it like any other mission. If they don’t want me, I’ll just leave."
"I doubt that’ll happen. From what I hear, they’ve spent the last fifteen years looking for you. Everyone in high society knows about it."
Yvonne Lowell didn’t answer, her gaze distant as she stared out the window, lost in thought.
「Tidalview.」
Tidalview was a new-Chinese-style villa community, completed and put on the market just last year. Its main selling point was its traditional courtyard design. There were only eighteen villas in total, each sitting on a nearly one-acre plot.
Prospective buyers for Tidalview had to pass a thorough screening, with one absolute requirement: a clean background.
Once, someone who refused to believe the rules applied to them tried to use their influence to force a sale. But before they could even identify the mysterious owner, their own dirty laundry was aired out for all to see. All evidence of their crimes was submitted to the authorities, and they were "rewarded" with the bankruptcy-and-prison package.
This led many to joke that the mysterious owner was a "criminal’s bane" who had built the entire complex just to serve justice and rid the world of evil.
Little did they know, it was just Yvonne Lowell’s 18th birthday present to herself.
The "clean background" requirement was simply because she didn’t want her coming-of-age present to be tainted by anything unsavory.
Besides the villas occupied by herself, Nina Jennings, and Zachary Jacobs, five remained unsold.
She left all related business to her subordinates, rarely getting involved herself.
All she remembered was that of the ten residents, only one was a Kingsland local; the others were from all over the world.
After they got out, Zachary Jacobs carried her suitcase inside, grabbed a bottle of orange juice from the fridge, and handed it to her before sitting on the sofa. "I had my cleaning lady come over this morning to tidy up. I also stocked the fridge with plenty of orange juice for you. Blackie’s been delivered, too—it’s in the underground garage. If you don’t feel like driving it, you can just grab one of my other cars."
"Okay, got it." Yvonne Lowell twisted open the cap and took a sip, the juice just barely washing away the bitter taste in her mouth.
His phone rang. Zachary Jacobs swiped to answer, flashing a wide, toothy grin. "Hey~ Nina."
"Move it. You’re blocking my view of Yvonne," Nina Jennings said, rolling her eyes to the heavens.
Zachary Jacobs’s composure broke. "Damn it! Then why did you call me in the first place? This is *my* phone!"
"Hilarious. If Yvonne had actually answered her phone, who do you think I’d be calling?"
Zachary Jacobs felt wronged. He felt hurt. But he didn’t dare say a word. He could only silently turn the phone’s camera toward Yvonne Lowell.
"Yvonne! I missed you like crazy! Mwah!" A fiery redhead appeared on the screen—Nina Jennings.
Yvonne Lowell glanced up at her. "When are you coming?"
"Tsk, soon. I’ll head over once I’m done with everything here," Nina Jennings said, casually flicking her hair. "By the way, when are you going to the Lowell Family?"
"I’m not sure yet. I plan on having Caleb Lowell come see me first."
Nina Jennings was confused. "Huh? Your older brother? Why? Don’t you usually meet the parents first?"
"He seems like the most reliable one."
Nina Jennings’s face contorted for a second before she burst out laughing. "That’s hysterical! I bet you just like him because he’s a man of few words and won’t be as annoying, right?"
Yvonne Lowell fell silent, because that was indeed the truth.
’Just because she was admitting it didn’t mean she wasn’t annoyed by it.’
While Nina Jennings was still cackling like a fool on screen, Yvonne simply reached over and ended the call.
Zachary Jacobs, standing to the side, was on the verge of tears. "Boss, my queen, that’s my phone! Are you trying to get her to blow it up with calls?!"
Without so much as a glance his way, Yvonne Lowell said, "Oh. Then you can just go outside to take her calls."
"Alright, fine! If that’s how you’re going to be, then I’ll just have to... I’ll just have to order dinner for you right now! What are you in the mood for, Lowell?" Zachary Jacobs slapped the coffee table and shot up, his expression turning sycophantic.
Yvonne Lowell finished her orange juice and started up the stairs. "The usual. Call me when it’s here."
"You got it!"
Zachary Jacobs grabbed his phone and rushed outside. It wasn’t that he was a coward, but Nina Jennings’s relentless calls were still coming in. If he didn’t pick up soon, he was sure he’d never hear the end of it.
’He couldn’t win against either of them, and he couldn’t afford to offend either of them. It’s tough being a man.’
Zachary Jacobs left after dinner.
Meanwhile, in the villa across from Yvonne Lowell’s, Nolan Crawford had just finished a business discussion with Leo Grant and was stretching his neck.
As his gaze fell outside, his expression turned to surprise. "Bro, someone actually moved in across the street. When you tried to buy that one, didn’t they say it wasn’t for sale?"
Leo Grant looked up at his words, a single eyebrow raised. "If it’s not for sale, then who do you suppose could be living there?"
