Chapter 5: The Whale’s Song
Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The Whale’s Song
Li Yaru’s legs went weak, and she nearly collapsed to the ground. "No, Captain, you can’t kill me! I’m an A level Sentinel..."
"In my eyes, rank is far less important than loyalty and unity."
Lu Jingyu’s voice was cold. "You have two choices now. Leave with me immediately, or I’ll make sure you’re buried here."
Her teammates nearby wanted to speak up, but Lu Jingyu’s oppressive aura was so heavy they couldn’t even raise their heads.
Knowing the captain’s personality, Li Yaru would likely already be dead if they weren’t in a dungeon.
But now, no one dared risk their life to help Arthur.
Just then, Xu Qingsui scooped up the spot-covered Arthur and said to Lu Jingyu, "Let’s not waste any more time. We’ll find the whale first and deal with this when we get back."
She glanced at Li Yaru, her voice icy. "But let me remind you, those who betray their teammates will sooner or later be betrayed by them. You’d better hope you can always look out for yourself."
Lu Jingyu watched her drag Arthur toward the whale droppings without a backward glance. His lips pressed into a tighter line. Ignoring the Sentinels behind him, he chased after her and blocked her path. "I’ll do it."
Xu Qingsui didn’t hand him over and continued swimming forward. "No need. I’m fine."
"I’m a Sentinel, born stronger than a guide. Dangerous tasks should be my responsibility."
Lu Jingyu’s brow twitched. "Don’t be stubborn. Give him to me."
’Xu Qingsui wasn’t actually being stubborn. Having survived the Apocalypse, she knew that playing the saint never ended well. She was willing to act, but only because she sensed that the energy within the blue spots was... like a supplement for her.
Just like with that octopus.
But if she told Lu Jingyu, he’d probably think she was a monster.’
"It’s precisely because you’re stronger that I should be the one to do this. If something happens to me, you have the experience to keep going and clear the dungeon."
She brushed him off casually. "Alright, let’s not argue. Trust me."
A complex, stunned look flashed in Lu Jingyu’s eyes.
’From the day he was born, he had shouldered his family’s expectations. After hiding his identity to build his own faction, the burdens he carried had only multiplied.
No one had ever said to him, "Trust me."’
It felt like something had struck his heart. He lowered his gaze and said softly, "Alright. I’ll trust you."
As the two headed in the direction of the whale, the Sentinels behind them gritted their teeth. "A high-level guide isn’t afraid to die, so what are we cowering for!? I’m going too! The worst that can happen is dying here!"
The group quickly followed, leaving Li Yaru standing alone, her chest heaving with rage.
’It’s all that bitch’s fault!
If she hadn’t shown up, none of this would have happened! And the captain would never have come to hate me!
If they want to go get themselves killed, then let them.
As long as I can hold out until the instance timer is up, I’ll get out of here alive. It’s none of my business if this area gets polluted!’
...
Meanwhile, Xu Qingsui and Lu Jingyu had arrived at the spot where they had previously found the whale droppings.
The surroundings were completely silent, with no sign of a whale’s presence.
The Sentinels who had followed them arrived and said hesitantly, "Captain, Lady guide, will there really be a whale here?"
Lu Jingyu scanned the surroundings, then suddenly held up a hand, gesturing for them to be quiet.
Xu Qingsui also held her breath and listened. In the distance, there seemed to be the rumbling of an undercurrent.
The sound of the tide grew closer. Lu Jingyu led them slowly forward, and sure enough, they saw a giant humpback whale swimming leisurely.
"There really is a whale!"
A Sentinel exclaimed in a low voice, "But it’s not singing... What do we do?"
At this, Xu Qingsui was also at a loss.
Lu Jingyu thought for a moment, then suddenly led everyone to hide behind a reef and cupped his hands around his mouth.
A series of strange syllables spilled from his lips. The humpback whale seemed to sense something, swishing its tail and beginning to search its surroundings.
After circling once, it didn’t seem to find its target and began to emit a low-frequency melody.
The two sounds intertwined, and the humpback whale began to sing.
As the song began, the blue spots on Arthur’s body started to fade.
Xu Qingsui looked amazed. "That’s incredible! How did you do that?"
Lu Jingyu glanced at her, his thin lips pressing together slightly as a suspicious red tinge appeared on his earlobes. "It’s nothing. Let’s see how Arthur is doing."
Xu Qingsui could tell something was odd. While checking on Arthur, she quietly asked the Golden Octopus, "What was that all about?"
The Golden Octopus gave a light cough. "That was the mating song of a female humpback whale. This one thought a pretty female was nearby, so it started singing its own courtship song."
The corner of Xu Qingsui’s mouth twitched.
’What a man of many talents...’
But seeing the coolly handsome Lu Jingyu imitate a female whale was a whiplash-inducing contrast.
Just then, Arthur regained consciousness. "Captain, Donghua... he..."
Lu Jingyu gently interrupted him. "I know. After we leave this dungeon, all scores will be settled."
"Scout the area, find a safe zone to regroup, and then we’ll figure out how to clear this."
The Sentinels hurried to comply.
But just then, the Golden Octopus warned: [Host, the whale that failed to find a mate is about to go berserk.]
The next second, Xu Qingsui saw the humpback whale let out an enraged roar and start rampaging through the reefs!
With no time to think, she grabbed Lu Jingyu and Arthur. "Run!"
The others also realized the situation was bad and began to scatter and flee.
Chunks of rock rained down on them. Lu Jingyu led the group in retreat, drawing his gun to stop the whale’s pursuit while searching for a safe zone.
But the humpback whale pursued them relentlessly, chasing the group into an undersea canyon.
Just as the whale was about to catch up, Lu Jingyu suddenly stopped.
Xu Qingsui’s head bumped into his solid back. She clutched her head, and just as she was about to speak, her body suddenly went stiff.
Standing before them was a towering blue door, covered in complex writing of unknown meaning.
The door was ajar, revealing pitch-black darkness within. A bizarre, cold wind continuously flowed out, chilling them to the bone.
The other Sentinels’ faces were deathly pale. Watching the humpback whale roaring madly at them, their hearts sank to the depths.
The rules were clear: blue doors do not exist on the seabed. Do not enter...
