Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Crisis of Trust

"I’ve done what you asked me to do. Don’t forget what you promised me."

Qi Qin suddenly spoke to the empty air. As he finished, a figure walked out from the back of the hall.

"Rest assured, Mr. Qi. Since you’ve helped me, I certainly won’t disappoint you."

Qi Qin ignored the person, silently shook his head, and also left the assembly hall.

Just as Lu Jingyu left the assembly hall, Xu Ruming came walking toward him.

Although he had been forced to compromise, Lu Jingyu’s opinion of the two hadn’t changed.

Seeing Xu Ruming, he couldn’t hide his displeasure and chose to ignore her.

But Xu Ruming, as if not noticing the displeasure in Lu Jingyu’s eyes, actually walked right up to him.

"Captain Lu, please give me a moment to explain the misunderstanding between us."

Xu Ruming’s enthusiasm was met with a look of utter disgust from Lu Jingyu.

"There’s no misunderstanding between us! It wasn’t my idea to let you join the Alliance, so you’d better watch yourselves from now on. If you do anything disgraceful, it won’t matter who pleads for you."

Having made his stance clear, Lu Jingyu tried to step around her and leave.

Anyone else would have been too ashamed to speak by now.

But Xu Ruming didn’t seem to care at all and continued to block Lu Jingyu’s path.

Faced with Lu Jingyu’s murderous gaze, Xu Ruming’s expression remained unchanged.

"Captain Lu, don’t you want to know about Xu Qingsui? Don’t you want to know what kind of person she really is?"

Lu Jingyu’s eyes shifted slightly, and his expression visibly softened a little.

Seeing this, Xu Ruming pressed her advantage. "Captain Lu, I just want you to know Xu Qingsui’s true colors. All I need is a few minutes of your time. If you don’t want to listen anymore, you can stop me at any time."

Lu Jingyu didn’t say anything, which Xu Ruming took as tacit agreement.

"Captain Lu, there’s a small shop over there. Let’s go talk."

Back in Lu Jingyu’s assigned residence, where Xu Qingsui was staying, the kitten left by the giant cat soon opened its eyes.

The first thing it saw was Xu Qingsui, and perhaps taking her for its mother, it nestled in her palm and meowed at her nonstop.

Xu Qingsui was in high spirits. She played with the kitten, and several hours passed without her noticing.

It wasn’t until Lu Jingyu returned that she remembered he had been gone for a long time.

Lu Jingyu walked in with a gloomy expression, clearly in a bad mood.

Xu Qingsui asked while still teasing the kitten, "Did something happen?"

Lu Jingyu stared at her for a long time without speaking.

Xu Qingsui sensed his complex emotions. She looked at the kitten, then suddenly held it out to Lu Jingyu.

"His name is Apocalypse. Cute, right?"

Lu Jingyu didn’t want to talk, and Xu Qingsui didn’t want to press him.

’She had thought about it for a long time. She had, in a sense, lived through the Apocalypse twice, and had rescued this little kitten in the midst of it, so she had given him that name.’

Lu Jingyu was a little surprised by how quickly Xu Qingsui changed the subject.

He only nodded after hearing the little kitten meow at him.

Averting his gaze, Lu Jingyu looked as if he wanted to say something to Xu Qingsui but couldn’t.

He opened his mouth several times, but always swallowed the words before they could come out.

"I have to take care of some things for the next two days. I’ll have Meng Donghua come and attend to you. If you need anything, just tell him."

With that, Lu Jingyu left directly.

Xu Qingsui didn’t understand, but she didn’t try to find out the reason either.

After Lu Jingyu had gone, Meng Donghua came to bring her fruit and pastries.

"Lady guide, I haven’t had a chance to thank you properly. The boss assigned me to look after you, so please don’t hesitate to ask if you need anything."

Xu Qingsui exchanged a few pleasantries, then Meng Donghua suddenly started complaining, "Speaking of which, I don’t know what kind of mess is going on, but your scumbag ex-fiancé and trashy sister were already rejected, and now they’re somehow back."

"I heard that trashy woman even went to see the boss just now. Who knows what she told him."

Xu Qingsui had been playing with Apocalypse, but her hands paused when she heard Meng Donghua’s words.

’Xu Ruming and Shen Ling’an joined the Heiyu Alliance?’

’Xu Ruming met with Lu Jingyu?’

The image of Lu Jingyu hesitating to speak surfaced in her mind, and Xu Qingsui’s brow tightened.

’It seems Xu Ruming said something to Lu Jingyu, undoubtedly to slander me.’

Thinking of Lu Jingyu’s reaction earlier, Xu Qingsui heaved a long sigh.

’It seems he believed Xu Ruming’s words.’

The fact that Lu Jingyu believed Xu Ruming so easily left a sour taste in her mouth.

’But then she thought, they had only known each other for a day or two. It wasn’t strange that Lu Jingyu didn’t trust her.’

’It just meant that completing the system’s mission to raise Lu Jingyu’s favorability score probably wouldn’t be so easy anymore.’

Still, she felt a little bitter. Xu Qingsui lost her mood and sent Meng Donghua away.

For the next two days, Lu Jingyu didn’t show up. Xu Qingsui couldn’t be bothered to go out, so when it was time to eat, she had Meng Donghua bring her meals back.

Although she didn’t leave her room, Meng Donghua brought her news about Xu Ruming and Shen Ling’an.

Shen Ling’an had woken up after being soothed by Xu Ruming.

Although Lu Jingyu had initially rejected them and exposed their immoral relationship, the fact that Shen Ling’an had fought a Mutant above his level that day still made many people look at him in a new light.

A small group of people had even become his followers, betting that he would make something of himself in the Heiyu Alliance and that they would rise with him.

On top of that, there was one other thing: Li Yaru was also back.

Meng Donghua was filled with righteous indignation when he mentioned this, because Li Yaru had been prepared to abandon him back then.

If Xu Qingsui hadn’t been there, he might have died in that instance, just like Arthur.

Xu Qingsui didn’t offer any opinion on this. There were some things she couldn’t control, and she couldn’t be bothered to waste energy thinking about them.

As for the fact that she would now be running into Xu Ruming and Shen Ling’an constantly, she couldn’t care less.

’It just meant she’d have to put up with their disgusting harassment, but it also meant she could find a chance to return the suffering they had inflicted on the original owner of this body.’

’After all was said and done, the only one she really cared about was Lu Jingyu. She had six Contracted Sentinels to deal with, after all!’

’Once she had completely won over Lu Jingyu, she could move on to the next one.’

On the third day of Lu Jingyu’s absence, Xu Qingsui still hadn’t seen him.

But that evening, the base’s alarm siren sounded again.

Xu Qingsui, holding Apocalypse, looked out the window with suspicion.

Meng Donghua knocked and entered, saying, "Lady guide, a large number of Mutants have suddenly appeared in the West District. We suspect there’s been a contamination leak at the chemical plant there too."

"The situation is urgent. All members without a current assignment have to go provide support. I have to go too. If you need anything, I’ll help you with it when I get back."

Meng Donghua looked rushed and was about to head to the scene after he finished speaking.

"Wait for me! I’ll go with you!" Xu Qingsui called out to him, immediately preparing to follow with Apocalypse in her arms.

"Lady guide, the situation at the scene is dangerous! You should stay here at the base!"
