Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Facing the Zombies
"I killed people? Are you blind?!"
Luna Dawson crouched down, grabbed Shay Kramer by the hair, and slapped her several more times. SLAP! SLAP! SLAP!
"I killed zombies, not people! If you’ve got the guts, go run to your mommy for a hug! You get a free ride and then act all innocent? SLAP! SLAP! SLAP! I try to do a good deed and end up saving a pair of stupid pigs!"
The angrier Luna Dawson got, the more she slapped. "I saved you, and this is the thanks I get? Having to put up with your attitude? SLAP! SLAP! SLAP!"
"Calling you stupid is an insult to pigs! You must walk on all fours when no one’s watching! Didn’t your dad ever teach you to be polite to the person who saved your life?!" Luna Dawson ranted on.
Shay Kramer’s head was spinning from the blows, and she was seeing stars. Her face quickly swelled up, turning her and her sister into a matching pair of pig-heads.
"I’m sorry... Please, let me go..."
She cried and begged for mercy, her earlier pretense of fragility gone.
Luna Dawson rolled her eyes and let go of her hair. "Hurry up and thank me! Didn’t your mother ever teach you to say thank you?! I’ve been yelling at you for this long and you still don’t get the main point?!"
Shay Kramer struggled to push herself up and mumbled, "Thank you... Thank you, Miss Luna Dawson... for saving us..."
Hearing a satisfactory answer, Luna Dawson yanked her to her feet and threw her onto Yolanda Kramer.
The two of them rolled in the snow, ending up covered in it and looking utterly pathetic.
Luna Dawson dusted off her hands, feeling refreshed, and grabbed Evan Olson to continue on their way home.
’It really is better not to bottle up anger. If you’re pissed, you’ve got to let it out. My mammary and thyroid glands are precious, after all!’
Evan Olson saw her vibrant expression and couldn’t help but laugh out loud. "Luna, with a mouth like that and hands that fast, you could out-argue three gossips at once."
Luna Dawson gave him a look of disdain. "...Is that supposed to be a compliment?"
Evan Olson just smiled and ruffled her hair. In high spirits, the two of them walked through the front door.
The group waiting in the living room immediately surrounded them. Mrs. Dawson, Grandpa, Wayne Dawson, and Rhonda Dawson all looked anxious as they peppered them with questions about what was happening outside and next door.
Evan Olson gave them a concise summary of what had happened.
Mrs. Dawson’s eyes were red. She took Luna Dawson’s hand and sighed.
"Luna, those two girls are about your age, and they’re in a pitiful state. We should help them if we can. If that were you, I would hope someone would be willing to lend a hand..."
Before she could finish, tears started to fall.
In her previous life, her Luna had struggled just like this in the apocalypse, all alone and with no one to rely on.
Grandpa, Wayne Dawson, and Rhonda Dawson also looked sympathetic, chiming in to persuade Luna Dawson to help the two sisters more.
Luna Dawson sighed to herself. ’They don’t get it,’ she thought. ’They haven’t experienced the cruelty of the apocalypse. Their minds are still stuck in the past, and their kind hearts can’t bear to see others suffer.’
’Especially Mom. She must be projecting my past self—alone and helpless—onto the Kramer sisters.’
She composed herself and said slowly, "Alright. The zombies right now are all low-level. Their movement and strength are about the same as a normal person’s. This is actually a good opportunity for everyone to get some real experience. Brother Evan has been training us for a while, so let’s treat today as live combat training to adapt to the apocalypse."
Inside the garage, two Dongfeng Mengshi trucks were parked quietly. Next to them, an unlicensed Paramount Marauder stood like an imposing iron beast, radiating power.
Miles Dawson and Evan Olson immediately fixed their eyes on the Marauder, their gazes instantly turning sharp. A man’s love for heavy-duty off-road vehicles was instantly ignited.
Miles Dawson strode forward and circled the iron beast twice, running his hands over and over its hard body as he exclaimed in awe.
"Whoa! This thing is so badass! I always thought my Mengshi was the king of the road, but compared to this, it’s just a little kid!"
He then turned to Luna Dawson with pleading eyes and begged, "Sis! Let me drive this one! I want to drive this one!"
Luna Dawson shot him a sidelong glance, pulled the keys from her backpack, and tossed them straight to Evan Olson.
The usually calm and reserved Evan Olson caught the keys, the corners of his mouth twitching into a slight smile. He even deliberately dangled them at Miles Dawson in a small, triumphant taunt.
"It’s full of zombies out there, and Mom and Uncle are in the car. It’s safest if Brother Evan drives," Luna Dawson said, turning to comfort a slightly dejected Miles Dawson. "You can drive it next time there’s a chance."
Everyone piled into the vehicle. Luna Dawson had Miles Dawson sit in the passenger seat while she, Mrs. Dawson, and Wayne Dawson sat in the spacious cabin.
With a low hum from the engine, the vehicle slowly pulled out of the garage.
The Kramer sisters at the gate didn’t dare go home, but they were also afraid of the zombies. With nowhere else to go, they could only huddle at the base of the wall by the Dawsons’ main gate, shivering violently from the cold.
They muttered, "It’s too cold. I can’t take it anymore."
Just as they were about to get up and find another place to hide, they suddenly heard the sound of a car engine from the yard.
Their eyes lit up instantly. They stopped in their tracks and waited right where they were, full of anticipation.
The three-meter-high alloy gate to the yard slid open, and they watched as a massive off-road vehicle slowly drove out.
The sisters’ eyes grew even wider, their mouths falling open subconsciously, their expressions filled with shock.
Then, a door opened, and Luna Dawson’s cold voice called out, "Get in."
The sisters were so cold they were shaking all over. Forgetting the trauma of being slapped, they scrambled into the vehicle using both their hands and feet.
The moment they got in, a wave of warm air washed over them, instantly chasing away the chill. They both let out a sigh of comfort and found seats.
Luna Dawson patted the empty seat next to her. "You two, come over here and give directions."
The two of them, having lost all their earlier ferocity, hunched their shoulders and slowly shuffled over.
Enveloped by the warm and comfortable interior of the vehicle, Shay Kramer’s voice softened considerably. "Thank you... Thank you all... Sir, the driver, you can just drive toward the south gate of the villa district. Our house is next to the fountain, number ninety-seven."
Beside her, Yolanda Kramer, with her swollen "pig-head" face and red, puffy eyes from crying, still had her lips puffed out so far you could hang an oil bottle from them. She still looked like the whole world owed her something.
Seeing the sisters’ pathetic and pitiful state, Mrs. Dawson and Wayne Dawson couldn’t help but offer a few words of comfort.
Luna Dawson sat quietly to the side, listening to their conversation in silence.
From the sisters’ conversation, she learned that Shay Kramer was the younger sister, nineteen years old, and Yolanda Kramer was the older one, twenty-one.
Their family was in the home appliance business, and their brand was a leader in the industry.
Their parents had prepared supplies at home in advance for emergencies. They had also hired four live-in bodyguards to protect the family of four. Including two maids and a driver, a total of eleven people were living in the villa.
"One of the bodyguards was the one who got us out," Shay Kramer said, her voice choked with sobs. "As he was escorting us to the car, Dad grabbed him. After we ran out, we don’t know what happened inside the villa..."
A few zombies appeared sporadically along the way. From the back seat, Luna Dawson calmly said, "Run them over."
Evan Olson stomped on the gas and plowed right into the zombies.
The vehicle’s cabin was well soundproofed, but the slight jolt of tires crushing human tissue, the crunch of breaking bones, and the tremor of a zombie’s skull being crushed sent a chill down everyone’s spine.
Shay Kramer and Yolanda Kramer couldn’t help but look at Luna Dawson, shocked by her ruthlessness and cruelty. They were also stunned that the man who so clearly possessed formidable combat strength was actually taking orders from her. A flash of jealousy flickered in their eyes.
After driving for a short while, they reached the fountain. Following the direction Shay Kramer pointed, the vehicle soon arrived outside the Kramer family’s villa.
