Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Physical Examination
As soon as the fishing ban was over, Luna Dawson had already rented a large cold storage facility at the Mariden port online.
King crab, Atlantic salmon, tuna, snow crab, lobster, and all sorts of other seafood were being continuously sent there.
The next day, the family drove straight to Mariden.
After a drive of over three hours, they booked a sea-view suite near the port for a week.
Luna Dawson couldn’t help but praise herself. "We get a sea view, and it’s convenient for dealing with the seafood. It’s just perfect!"
Unexpectedly, at three in the morning, Rosalind Dawson ripped off their blankets and shouted, "Get up, get up! Time to go to the fishing port to get the seafood!"
The siblings had stayed up until one or two in the morning and were completely dazed when they were woken up. They fumbled for some coffee and chugged it down.
Miles Dawson grumbled, "Mom, are you trying to run all the other seafood vendors out of business?"
Luna Dawson shook her head, trying to wake herself up. "Mom, am I going to die from overwork like this?"
Mrs. Dawson immediately pinched Luna’s mouth. "Hush! Don’t say such unlucky things!"
"Okay~"
It wasn’t even 3:30 a.m. when the three of them arrived, but the Mariden fishing port was already bustling like a boiling pot of soup...
Mist hung heavy in the air over the pre-dawn fishing port as returning boats, laden with their catch, docked one after another.
Gleaming silver hairtail, plump swimming crabs, and live prawns were piled high on the decks.
The trio had a clear division of labor: Luna Dawson coordinated with wholesalers to finalize the purchase list, Rosalind Dawson meticulously checked the freshness of the seafood, and Miles Dawson helped with the count.
This purchasing spree continued for several days.
Every evening, the three of them would stroll along the harbor promenade, occasionally renting a fishing boat to go squid jigging at night.
Every day, they lounged in their sea-view room, enjoying the salty, humid sea breeze and watching the distant boats dot the horizon.
Luna Dawson specifically signed up for a crash course in diving at the tourist center, hiring three private instructors for one-on-one lessons.
Her eyes sparkled with anticipation.
’I have to get a coach with an eight-pack!’
She firmly insisted it would make her more motivated to learn.
In the end, however, she spent a week being taught by three deeply-tanned old men...
Miles Dawson teased her about it for an entire year...
During this time, she had more than ten extra-large temporary holding tanks custom-built.
Fully equipped with industrial-grade thermostats, sterilizing lamps, and air pumps, Luna Dawson planned to try raising some seafood herself.
She even harbored an extravagant hope: ’If only there was an ocean in my pocket dimension...’
A week flew by in a flash. Having stockpiled enough seafood and various equipment, the three of them returned home, completely satisfied.
Luna Dawson looked at the tens of millions still left in her savings and sighed. ’It’s really not easy to spend money.’
Back in Southen, five days had passed since she sent the email. ’I wonder if the various departments received it,’ she thought.
’Starting next month, when the events start coming true one by one, I hope someone still remembers this email...’
After some masterful persuasion from Miles Dawson, Grandpa Olson and Evan Olson accompanied the Dawson family to the hospital for a comprehensive physical.
The Olsons were outsiders in the village. Having never seen his parents, Evan was raised solely by his grandfather.
Since both families were incomplete and they lived close to each other, Luna and Miles had always loved tagging along and playing with the older Evan Olson.
They learned from him how to climb trees, pick fruit, and find birds’ nests, as well as how to swim and catch fish. When they were tired from playing, they would all go back to Luna’s house to watch anime and play video games.
Evan Olson was a soldier for ten years, and after the siblings went to college, their opportunities to meet became even rarer.
He rarely got leave from the army, so they could only get together on the rare occasions he had time to come back for a visit.
Counting the two years of the apocalypse, it meant Luna hadn’t seen him in over two years...
A light rain was falling that day, washing the city center clean and fresh and taming some of the sweltering heat of the southern Indian summer.
The puddles at the hospital entrance reflected the faint golden halo of sunlight piercing through the clouds.
Pedestrians ambled by under their umbrellas, the fine strands of rain weaving a light, airy curtain in the daylight.
Just as Luna Dawson parked the car, she caught sight of a strikingly upright figure at the entrance—it was Evan Olson!
At 28 years old, Evan Olson stood out in any crowd with his 181-centimeter frame.
A few raindrops clung to his neat buzz cut, glistening under the daylight. His dark skin was proof of years spent outdoors and a badge of honor from his ten years in the army.
His features were sharp and well-defined. The diagonal scar across his left eyebrow wasn’t intimidating; on the contrary, it made his eyes seem all the more steady and full of life.
Even though he was retired from the military, he still stood ramrod straight in a simple, casual black t-shirt. The lines of his muscles were faintly visible underneath, hinting at a solid strength.
Luna Dawson’s skin was fair and delicate, and her pale yellow dress made her look even more so. With her face free of makeup, her almond-shaped eyes curved into crescents as she walked with a light step, waving to Evan Olson.
Standing next to her tall, straight-backed brother, Miles Dawson, she appeared even more petite and delicate.
Evan Olson was supporting his grandfather, and his expression softened as he saw them approach.
Seeing the two of them, Luna Dawson felt as if a lifetime had passed. She smiled and waved. "Brother Evan, long time no see." Her voice, however, was a bit choked up.
"We’re finally all together," Evan Olson said, his voice hearty. "Grandpa’s been talking about you all nonstop lately. Today was a good chance to bring him for a check-up and for everyone to catch up."
"There are a lot of tests for the physical today, so it might be too tiring for Grandpa. Brother Evan, why don’t you two come over for dinner during the Mid-Autumn Festival in a few days?"
Luna Dawson looked at Evan Olson. ’No matter what,’ she thought, ’in this life, I have to keep him here. I can’t let him go abroad.’
Miles Dawson clapped him on the shoulder. "Brother Evan, still so spirited! And getting more handsome, too."
Mrs. Dawson moved closer to Grandpa Olson to ask after his health with concern. The group chatted and laughed as they escorted the old man toward the hospital’s medical examination center.
After a full-body examination, it turned out that other than Grandpa Olson having the "three highs"—high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar—everyone else was perfectly healthy.
At seventy-three, such chronic conditions could only be managed with regular medication.
To Luna Dawson’s great envy, both Miles Dawson and Evan Olson had perfectly aligned wisdom teeth that had erupted normally and didn’t need to be removed.
The odds of that were slim, yet there were two such people right beside her!
’It seems fate is determined to make me suffer,’ she thought. ’Bad eyes and bad teeth...’
After the examination, Luna Dawson scheduled her femtosecond laser eye surgery first, since the recovery was quick. After that, she would have all four of her wisdom teeth extracted under general anesthesia.
In her past life, after the apocalypse began, her wisdom teeth had started to become inflamed. The recurring infections had nearly been the death of her!
On top of that, she was nearsighted with a prescription of -4.00. Beyond ten meters, she couldn’t tell men from women; beyond fifty, she couldn’t distinguish people from livestock...
The memory alone brought tears to her eyes. In the apocalypse, there were no medical facilities for surgery, let alone the means to get a new pair of glasses...
Queuing for each test, paying the fees, and seeing the doctors was an ordeal that took up the entire day.
Everyone was exhausted. They agreed to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival together before heading back to the village.
Luna Dawson arranged for both of her surgeries to be completed within a week. Don’t ask why—the answer was that she was very busy and couldn’t let anything delay her spending!
After her surgeries, Luna Dawson could only stay home and shop online. She also ordered large quantities of prepared meals and snacks from many of the city’s restaurants.
During this time, with a face so swollen it was practically reflective, her life became a straight line between her home and the warehouse as she received deliveries.
Luna Dawson had already contacted suppliers and finalized her orders: fifty high-power solar photovoltaic generation systems and one hundred dual-fuel diesel and gasoline generators, all to be delivered to the designated warehouse as soon as possible.
As soon as the swelling in her face went down, she flew to Westeria to inspect the energy reserves she had ordered.
Canisters of compressed natural gas were stacked like small hills. Over a thousand high-capacity storage batteries were arranged in neat rows, alongside an ample supply of various types of long-burning coal.
She personally checked the quality inspection report for each batch of supplies. After instructing the manager to ensure proper moisture-proofing and fire-proofing, she paid the balance in full. She informed them she didn’t need their workers for handling, as she would arrange for transportation and loading herself. The suppliers were overjoyed to have a rich client who made their job easy. They happily took their money and left.
Luna Dawson’s gaze swept over the mountain of energy supplies with satisfaction. ’Once it’s late and quiet, I’ll move all of this into my pocket dimension.’
