Chapter 6: My Wife Is Elastic
Chapter 6: My Wife Is Elastic
The green light filled the entire kitchen.
Liam could barely see through the glow surrounding Lydia.
The small gelatinous body trembled on the table, floating slightly as if an invisible current of energy was flowing through it.
The System window appeared.
[Lydia Davis has reached Lv. 20.]
Liam remained frozen.
He didn’t know how to react.
His wife was evolving again.
"Lydia..."
The green blob began to change.
Its surface became brighter.
More stable.
It no longer looked like a simple trembling mass of jelly.
Its shape began to stretch.
Small extensions emerged from its body, slowly moving through the air.
They looked like tentacles.
Liam’s eyes widened in surprise.
"Are you alright?"
He didn’t receive an answer immediately.
Then a new window appeared before him.
Lydia’s profile had changed.
[Lydia Davis — Elastic Slime Lv. 20]
Liam smiled.
"We did it..."
He stepped closer.
"Looks like you evolved."
He watched as the small tentacles moved awkwardly.
"And now you have..."
He pointed at one.
"...arms?"
Lydia’s response appeared in the chat.
[Lydia: I think so.]
[Lydia: It’s strange.]
[Lydia: I feel like my body is completely different.]
One of the tentacles stretched several inches before returning to its original shape.
[Lydia: But it feels better.]
[Lydia: I can move on my own.]
[Lydia: And I can stretch my body.]
Liam stared at the little slime in front of him.
It was incredible to think that this creature was the same person who had been cooking for him that very morning.
"You’re not just a simple blob of jelly anymore."
Lydia seemed offended.
[Lydia: Hey.]
[Lydia: I was never just a simple blob of jelly.]
Liam burst out laughing.
"I guess you’re right."
She continued moving slowly.
But after a few seconds, her movements began to slow down.
[Lydia: Although...]
[Lydia: I think I’m a little tired.]
Liam immediately changed his expression.
"Tired?"
[Lydia: Yes.]
[Lydia: Too many things happened today.]
[Lydia: First, turning into a slime.]
[Lydia: Then learning how to move.]
[Lydia: Evolving twice.]
[Lydia: And eating strange things.]
One of her small tentacles pointed toward the knife sitting near the sink.
[Lydia: I still don’t understand how that ended up being a Legendary Sword.]
Liam looked away.
"Neither do I."
[Lydia: I need to rest a little before we continue training.]
Liam nodded.
"That sounds good. Actually..."
He looked at the time.
"I’m going out to buy groceries."
The slime became completely still.
Then a message appeared.
[Lydia: Then take me with you.]
Liam blinked.
"What?"
[Lydia: Put me inside your photography bag.]
[Lydia: I want to rest there and come with you.]
For a few seconds, Liam imagined the scene.
Him entering the supermarket, the woman who always served them asking about Lydia, and him explaining that he had his wife, who had been turned into a slime, inside his bag.
He couldn’t help laughing.
"That would be pretty strange. I’d be taking my wife shopping inside my bag."
Lydia began moving.
Her tentacles curled.
Her body swayed from side to side.
As if she were laughing.
Even though no sound came out.
Liam smiled.
"At least you still have the same sense of humour."
Then his eyes landed on the camera hanging around his neck.
The same one he had considered selling just a few hours ago.
An idea came to him.
"Wait."
He picked up the camera.
"Before we leave..."
Lydia stopped moving.
[Lydia: What is it?]
Liam smiled.
"I want to do something."
He placed the camera against a corner of the table.
Activated the timer.
Then returned to Lydia.
He stood beside her.
For a moment, he hesitated.
Then he wrapped one arm around the gelatinous body.
As if he were hugging her.
Lydia remained still.
Then two of her new tentacles rose.
They stretched out and gently wrapped around Liam.
His eyes widened in surprise.
"Lydia?"
He didn’t have time to say anything else.
The camera made a sound.
Three seconds.
Two.
One.
Click.
The photograph was captured at the exact moment Liam was completely red-faced, hugging his slime wife.
After a few seconds, Lydia sent a message.
[Lydia: I think that was a great idea.]
Liam looked at the camera.
[Lydia: It’s our first photo.]
[Lydia: From before turning a relationship tragedy into something useful for our lives.]
Liam smiled.
"Yeah."
He put the camera away.
Picked up his bag.
And felt that maybe things could get better.
◇◆◇
The supermarket was only a few blocks away from the apartment.
Liam walked calmly along the sidewalk.
His photography bag rested over his shoulder.
Inside was Lydia, resting.
Since leaving home, he hadn’t received any messages from the System.
Not a single word from her.
Not even a movement.
It was strange.
Normally, Lydia talked a lot.
Too much, even.
But now she was simply there.
Sleeping.
As he walked, Liam couldn’t stop thinking about everything that had happened.
That morning, he had been an ordinary man.
An unemployed photographer.
Now he was an Awakener.
He had a System.
He had a contracted beast.
And his wife was a slime.
He looked at his abilities again.
[Tamer Skills]
[Encouragement]
[Call]
He sighed.
"My abilities are pretty useless..."
He couldn’t launch attacks.
He couldn’t fight.
He couldn’t protect Lydia.
And yet...
There was something he couldn’t deny.
He was happy that he had awakened.
Even if it happened this way.
Even if his wife had lost her human body.
He gently slapped his cheek.
"No. I can’t think like that."
He looked ahead.
"Right now, I need to focus. We have to keep training. I need to figure out what makes Lydia evolve. We need to become Hunters. We need to make money and pay our debts."
He continued walking.
Thinking about what to buy.
More meat.
More ingredients.
Maybe something special.
Something that could help Lydia level up again.
Then...
He stopped.
A strange sound came from below.
A tremor.
Weak at first.
But growing stronger.
Liam slowly lowered his gaze.
The street began to shake.
The people around him also started stopping.
Some looked around in confusion.
Others raised their phones.
And then...
The ground shook again.
This time with much greater force.
Liam felt the bag over his shoulder move slightly.
His expression changed.
"Lydia..."
