Chapter 5: Feeding My Wife
Chapter 5: Feeding My Wife
Liam sat at the table with his elbows resting on its surface, carefully watching the little gelatinous blob in front of him.
Just a few hours ago, the sight would have seemed completely insane.
Now...
It was simply his new normal.
Liam broke the silence.
"There’s something I can’t stop thinking about."
The System chat appeared above the table.
[Lydia: What’s on your mind now?]
He rested his chin on one hand.
"It looks like you can grow stronger by consuming things."
A brief silence followed.
"You reached Level 10 just by eating a piece of apple pie. Then you reached Level 15 by... well..."
He smiled awkwardly.
"...letting me pet you."
Lydia replied immediately.
[Lydia: It still sounds weird when you put it like that.]
Liam chuckled.
"I know. But if we’re going to become Hunters..."
His expression turned serious again.
"...we need to train first. We need to figure out how this System works. And improve our abilities."
The little slime made a tiny hop.
[Lydia: So what are you thinking?]
Liam’s eyes lit up.
"Do you remember that beef Mrs. Barnes gave you? The woman whose house you used to clean?"
[Lydia: Of course. It’s in the fridge.]
"It was really expensive meat. You said we’d save it for a special occasion."
He smiled.
"What happens if you eat it?"
Lydia took a few seconds to answer.
[Lydia: Liam.]
[Lydia: Don’t waste that food on me.]
[Lydia: You should eat it for dinner.]
[Lydia: We never did our grocery shopping... We’re almost out of food.]
Her words made Liam sigh.
He knew she was right.
But he shook his head.
"It doesn’t matter. Let’s just try a small piece. If it works... maybe we’ll find a quick way to make you stronger."
He stood up.
Opened the refrigerator.
The cold air brushed against his face.
And reality came crashing back.
It was almost empty.
There was only a plate holding the leftovers from that expensive cut of beef.
Half a lemon.
And a red pepper left over from the pasta sauce they’d made the night before.
"..."
Liam swallowed.
’’We’re really running out of food.’’
He took out the plate.
Then grabbed the lemon.
And finally the pepper.
He arranged everything on the table.
"Since we’re already at it..."
He looked at Lydia.
"...we might as well experiment with everything else too."
The slime stayed motionless for a few moments.
[Lydia: Are we really going to run experiments with those?]
Liam smiled.
"More or less."
He picked up the knife and carefully cut off a small piece of beef.
"Ready?"
Her reply took a few seconds.
[Lydia: ...]
[Lydia: Are you sure about this?]
He nodded enthusiastically.
"Absolutely."
He slowly brought the piece of meat towards her gelatinous body.
"Here goes."
The meat passed through the slime’s surface.
It floated inside the green mass for a few seconds.
Then it slowly dissolved.
Until it disappeared completely.
The two of them waited.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Fifteen.
Nothing.
Liam carefully watched Lydia.
"Everything alright?"
The chat appeared.
[Lydia: Yes.]
[Lydia: I barely felt anything.]
"Nothing?"
Then the System decided to intervene.
[Your Slime has consumed Leftovers.]
Silence.
No achievement appeared.
No evolution.
No reward.
Just that single line.
"..."
Liam frowned.
"That’s it?"
He waited a few more seconds.
Nothing.
He slumped back into his chair.
"I don’t understand this System."
He stared at the floating window in frustration.
"Maybe Mrs. Barnes tricked you. Maybe that meat wasn’t high quality after all. Or maybe she just gave us the leftovers from her own dinner."
The slime made a small hop.
Then the chat appeared.
[Lydia: Hahaha.]
Liam raised an eyebrow.
[Lydia: Don’t worry so much.]
[Lydia: You’re overthinking it.]
[Lydia: It’s not that big of a deal.]
She continued typing.
[Lydia: We still have the lemon and the pepper.]
Liam found himself smiling.
"You always know exactly what to say when I start losing my mind."
Before he could pick up either vegetable...
Lydia moved on her own.
Plop.
Plop.
She awkwardly slid across the table.
Until she was sitting on top of both the pepper.
And the half lemon.
"Huh?"
The two foods slowly began sinking into her body.
"Lydia."
She didn’t answer.
The pepper disappeared.
Then the lemon.
Liam’s eyes widened.
"Wait! Isn’t it too much to eat both of them at once?"
The chat appeared almost immediately.
[Lydia: I can’t taste anything.]
A brief pause.
[Lydia: But... I feel like something’s happening inside my body.]
Before Liam could ask what she meant...
Several green windows appeared one after another.
[Your Slime has consumed Primordial Acid.]
[Poison Resistance unlocked.]
"...What?"
Liam stared blankly at the empty spot where the lemon had been.
"Primordial Acid?"
He didn’t even have time to process it.
Another window immediately appeared.
[Your Slime has consumed Sacred Flame.]
[Fire Resistance unlocked.]
"...What do you mean, Sacred Flame?"
He looked at the spot where the pepper had been.
"That wasn’t an ordinary pepper..."
he muttered, completely bewildered.
"What the hell did we buy?"
Lydia seemed just as confused.
[Lydia: What do those messages say?]
Liam opened his mouth to answer.
But at that exact moment, another accident happened.
The little slime rolled backwards a few inches.
Plop.
And bumped into the kitchen knife that was still lying on the table.
"Lydia!"
It was too late.
The metal blade slowly began sinking into the gelatinous mass.
"No, no, no..."
The handle disappeared.
Then the blade.
Until the entire knife had vanished.
Liam froze.
"...Did you just eat the knife?"
The System, completely indifferent, displayed another window.
[Achievement Earned.]
[Your Slime has consumed a Legendary Sword.]
"..."
Liam felt a vein begin throbbing on his forehead.
"THAT WAS THE KITCHEN KNIFE!"
The System, however, couldn’t have cared less.
Another window immediately appeared beneath it.
[Lydia Davis has reached Lv. 20.]
The little green body began radiating an intense glow.
The light flooded the entire kitchen.
Lydia hurriedly sent another message.
[Lydia: Liam.]
[Lydia: What’s happening?]
Her body trembled without stopping.
The glow grew brighter with every passing second.
Liam stared at all the floating windows before him.
’Epic poison.’
’Sacred flame.’
’Legendary sword.’
’A lemon.’
’A pepper.’
’And a kitchen knife.’
None of it made any sense.
Absolutely none.
But one thing was clear.
Lydia’s next evolution had just begun.
