Chapter 16: Storage Slime

Fallen trees still littered the battlefield.

The enormous dragon had vanished completely.

All that remained was a small green gelatinous blob, gently bouncing across the ground.

Then a system window appeared before Liam.

[Your Slime has consumed Level 1 Insect.]

He didn’t even have time to finish reading it.

A second notification appeared immediately afterward.

[Lydia Davis has reached Level 30.]

The little slime’s body began emitting an intense green light.

Liam instinctively took a step back.

Amber, Millie, and Evan also stared at the scene.

"Is... she glowing?"

Millie murmured.

The light intensified, and for several seconds it became impossible to make out Lydia’s silhouette. The radiance enveloped her entire body.

Liam smiled.

’Come on, Lydia. Let’s see what changed this time.’

Little by little, the glow began to fade.

When it finally disappeared...

The little slime was still there.

Round and green.

Just as adorable as ever.

Liam blinked.

"That was it?"

He immediately opened her status window.

[Lydia Davis — Storage Slime Lv. 30.]

Liam read the new title several times.

"A Storage Slime?"

Another window appeared.

[Evolution Complete.]

[New Skill Unlocked.]

[Storage.]

[Your Slime can now store objects inside her body without consuming them.]

Liam’s eyes widened.

"Store things...?"

He looked at Lydia.

"So now you don’t destroy everything that enters your body?"

The slime gave a tiny hop.

[Lydia: It doesn’t seem like I do.]

[Lydia: Though I don’t really understand how it works either.]

Liam immediately began imagining the possibilities.

They could store supplies, weapons, or valuable items found inside dungeons.

It was far more useful than it sounded at first.

Before he could continue thinking, however...

Amber, Millie, and Evan walked over to him.

The vice-captain was smiling.

She stopped in front of Liam.

"I think there’s something that should be said first."

Amber gave him a slight nod.

"Thank you. You saved us."

Millie smiled as well.

"I thought that monster was going to wipe us all out."

Evan let out a long sigh.

"So did I."

Liam shook his head.

"It wasn’t me."

He pointed toward the little slime.

"It was her."

The three hunters turned to look at Lydia.

Millie slowly crouched down, observing the slime with obvious curiosity.

"I’ve never seen a creature like this before... She’s actually pretty adorable."

Lydia gave a proud little bounce.

But Evan spoke up immediately.

"I have."

Everyone looked at him.

"We encountered several slimes in a Rank C dungeon."

He frowned.

"But... They weren’t even remotely this strong."

Then he looked back at Liam.

"How did you tame one? What kind of abilities do you have? You must be an incredibly powerful Awakened to control a creature like that."

At that exact moment, messages began appearing.

[Lydia: Excuse me?]

[Lydia: Did that mediocre hunter just talk about me like I’m some kind of monster?]

[Lydia: I really don’t like the way he’s talking about me.]

Liam almost laughed.

Instead, he answered Evan directly.

"Don’t talk about my wife like that."

The archer blinked.

"...Wife?"

Liam nodded.

"Yes. My wife. And if it weren’t for her..."

He pointed toward the place where the dragon had disappeared.

"You’d be nothing but charcoal right now."

Evan looked back at Lydia.

"But... How can that thing be your wife?"

The atmosphere immediately became tense again.

Liam slowly raised a clenched fist.

"Listen..."

He was just about to punch him.

Before he could...

A hand rested gently on his shoulder.

Amber.

The vice-captain slowly shook her head.

"Let it go."

She sighed.

"Please forgive him."

She glanced sideways at Evan.

"He’s an idiot. He speaks before he thinks."

Liam kept his fist raised for another moment.

Then he took a deep breath and lowered it.

"Fine. It’s nothing."

Amber smiled.

"Thank you."

Then she crossed her arms.

"By the way."

"There’s something I’m curious about."

Liam looked at her.

"You don’t seem to belong to any guild."

He shook his head.

"Not yet."

Amber’s smile grew even wider.

"Then you should apply. Come to the Ace of Swords Guild."

Liam opened his eyes slightly.

"You really think they’d accept me?"

The woman laughed softly.

"After what I just witnessed..."

She pointed toward Lydia.

"They’d be complete idiots if they turned you down."

Then she added,

"And if you’re lucky... We might end up working together."

Liam felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

It was exactly what he had dreamed about after watching Sir Armstrong’s television interview.

A message appeared.

[Lydia: That sounds amazing!]

[Lydia: Maybe becoming hunters won’t be so difficult after all.]

Liam smiled.

"Thank you very much for the recommendation."

Amber waved dismissively.

"No need to thank me."

Then her expression turned serious again.

"But we’re not finished yet."

She looked toward the forest.

"We still have to get out of this dungeon and call for reinforcements. According to the guild’s map... There’s only one floor left."

Liam nodded.

"We’ll follow you."

While Amber organized the group...

Liam looked around.

Millie was already using a healing skill.

A warm white light enveloped the injured hunters who had survived the battle.

Their wounds slowly began closing.

Meanwhile...

Evan seemed to have completely forgotten everything that had happened.

He was now smiling at the two women Liam and Lydia had rescued.

"So... What do you say, once we get out of here..."

He never finished the sentence.

Amber suddenly appeared behind him.

Her palm became coated in crimson energy.

Smack!

The blow to the back of his head echoed through the forest.

Evan dropped to his knees.

"Ow!"

Amber looked down at him with an icy expression.

"Get your head straight. We’re working. And show a little more respect to the people who just saved your life."

Evan rubbed the back of his head.

"...Yes, Vice-Captain."

Liam couldn’t help laughing.

A message immediately appeared.

[Lydia: Hahaha.]

[Lydia: I like that woman.]

Liam smiled.

’So do I.’

A few seconds later, another message appeared.

[Lydia: Hey, honey.]

[Lydia: Do you know exactly how we’re supposed to use my new skill?]

Liam opened the skill description once again.

He read through it carefully.

Then he replied through Call.

’Lydia...’

’You can now store objects inside your body without destroying them.’

There was a brief silence.

Then...

[Lydia: Really?]

’That’s what the system says.’

’So we should make the most of it.’

’This dungeon probably contains valuable materials.’

’Magic crystals.’

’Herbs.’

’Rare items.’

’All of those can be sold.’

’And now you can carry them without consuming them.’

Barely two seconds passed before the chat exploded.

[Lydia: YES!]

[Lydia: We’re going to get rich!]

[Lydia: Finally, I can be a backpack too!]

Liam burst into laughter.

"What are you laughing about?"

Amber asked while continuing to organize the group.

"Nothing."

Liam replied with a smile.

"I was just thinking."

He looked at the little slime happily bouncing beside him.

’Lydia.’

’You know...’

’You’re handling all of this surprisingly well.’

Her reply came immediately.

[Lydia: Now that we’re safe...]

[Lydia: I have to admit something.]

[Lydia: That was actually fun.]
