Chapter 15: Devouring a Dragon

Liam kept his eyes fixed on the enormous dragon.

Then he looked back at Lydia.

"I wasn’t joking."

The little slime gave a tiny hop.

[Lydia: Are you serious?]

"Completely. We need to take advantage of the hunters keeping it distracted. I want you to stretch as far as you possibly can. And when the time comes..."

Liam smiled.

"I want you to eat it."

Several seconds passed in silence.

Then a new message appeared.

[Lydia: If you really believe I can do it...]

[Lydia: Then I’ll do it.]

Liam’s smile widened.

"That’s what I wanted to hear. I trust you."

Lydia didn’t reply.

Her small body began sliding toward the battlefield.

As she moved forward, her body slowly started to expand.

◇◆◇

The battle continued.

Amber threw another punch wrapped in crimson energy.

The impact echoed throughout the forest.

But the enormous dragon barely turned its head, as though the blow had been nothing more than a minor annoyance.

Liam stepped forward.

"Amber!"

The vice-captain barely turned her head.

"Why are you still here?!"

"I need you to buy us some time!"

Amber struck the monster again.

"Time for what?! Take this chance and run!"

Liam shook his head.

"Run where?"

His voice rang across the battlefield.

"We’re inside a Dungeon! We don’t even know where the exit is!"

Amber fell silent, though she continued attacking the dragon.

Liam went on.

"The only way out... is to defeat that dragon!"

Amber let out a disbelieving laugh.

"And how exactly do you plan to do that? You’re not even a hunter!"

Liam smiled.

"No. But she can."

He pointed behind the battle.

Amber frowned.

Then she saw it.

An enormous green mass was slowly advancing through the trees.

Every second it grew larger.

Taller.

Wider.

The ground trembled beneath its own weight.

◇◆◇

Millie continued holding up her enormous shield.

Her entire body remained covered in that golden aura.

The dragon refused to stop attacking her.

Every impact forced the giant woman several steps backward.

Her breathing was growing heavier.

Maintaining the taunt was draining far too much energy.

Meanwhile, high atop a tree, Evan prepared another arrow.

But when he looked up, his expression completely changed.

"What...?"

A gigantic green wall was rising above the trees.

His heart skipped a beat.

"Another monster!"

He immediately raised his bow.

But before he could fire, he heard Liam’s voice.

"No! Don’t attack!"

Everyone turned toward him.

"She’s my wife! Her name is Lydia!"

Amber blinked.

"...What?"

Liam raised an arm.

"She’s here to defeat the dragon! I just need you to hold it off a little longer!"

A brief silence followed.

Then Amber burst into laughter.

"Hahaha!"

She clutched her stomach.

"In all my years as a hunter... I’ve never heard of anyone having a slime for a wife!"

She shook her head, still smiling.

"You really are... full of surprises."

Liam simply smiled.

Meanwhile, Lydia continued growing.

Three meters.

Three and a half.

Four meters.

Her enormous body cast a massive shadow across the battlefield.

Even the dragon slowly lifted its head to stare at the immense gelatinous mass.

Liam clenched his fist.

"Almost... just a little more."

◇◆◇

Millie was breathing heavily.

She could feel her legs giving out beneath her.

The golden glow surrounding her body began to fade.

"No..."

she whispered.

"I can’t keep going..."

The golden energy vanished.

The taunt ended.

The dragon immediately lifted its head.

Its eyes left Millie, searching for a new target.

The giant woman dropped to her knees in exhaustion.

Before the monster could react...

Amber appeared beside her.

"Come on!"

She grabbed Millie by the arm and dragged her out of reach of those massive claws.

"I’m sorry..."

Millie muttered between gasps.

Amber shook her head.

"You’ve done enough."

But then the dragon found a new target.

It slowly turned toward the tree where Evan was still firing arrows.

The archer swallowed hard.

"Damn..."

The monster’s throat began to glow.

A brilliant orange light filled its mouth.

It was gathering an enormous amount of fire.

Cold sweat ran down Evan’s forehead.

’I can’t block that...’

He looked at the tree.

Then at the ground below.

He considered jumping.

It was his only option.

Even if it meant breaking several ribs.

The dragon opened its mouth wide.

The flames were ready.

And then...

A voice rang through the entire forest.

"It’s ready!!"

Liam raised his arm.

"Do it, Lydia!!"

◇◆◇

The gigantic green mass fell from above.

The dragon reacted instantly.

It unleashed its fiery breath.

A blazing column of flames slammed directly into Lydia.

The fire completely engulfed her body.

Amber’s eyes widened.

"That thing... it’s going to die!"

But nothing happened.

The flames vanished.

Lydia continued descending.

Thanks to her Fire Resistance, the flames couldn’t harm her at all.

The dragon tried to retreat.

But it was already too late.

The gelatinous mass crashed down on top of it.

First covering its head.

Then its wings.

Then its entire body.

The monster roared as it struggled to break free.

Its massive body thrashed violently.

But Lydia had no intention of letting go.

Inside the green mass...

Another skill activated.

[Acid.]

A corrosive liquid spread across the dragon’s body.

Its scales began to slowly melt away.

The hardened armor that had withstood every attack from the guild...

Started disappearing.

The monster roared even louder.

It struggled.

It fought to escape.

But the harder it struggled...

The deeper it sank into Lydia’s body.

Until...

Its movements began to weaken.

Then...

They grew slower.

And finally...

They stopped.

The enormous gelatinous mass gradually shrank.

Little by little, until it returned to its usual size.

There wasn’t a trace of the dragon left.

Only Lydia, happily bouncing across the ground.

◇◆◇

Amber watched the scene from the edge of the battlefield.

She couldn’t believe it.

Beside her, Millie smiled as she caught her breath.

"She... she saved us."

Amber slowly nodded.

"Yeah..."

"That slime..."

"She saved all of us."

Up in the tree, Evan remained completely frozen.

He couldn’t utter a single word.

He had never seen anything like it.

Liam ran over to Lydia, knelt in front of her, and smiled like an excited child.

"You’re amazing! You actually did it!"

The little slime gave a joyful hop.

A message immediately appeared.

[Lydia: We did it.]

[Lydia: Together.]

Liam gently stroked her gelatinous body.

"Yeah."

"Together."

Then the system window appeared before his eyes.

[Your Slime has consumed Level 1 Insect.]

A second message immediately followed.

[Lydia Davis has reached Level 30.]
