Chapter 29: 29: Searching For Talent

Arthur rested his elbow on the desk, calmly waiting.

Roderic didn’t state his conditions immediately.

Instead, he took a moment to think everything through once more.

After a moment, Roderic finally glanced up again.

’’My first condition is simple,’’ he said. ’’I want the money I’ve not received all these years.’’

Arthur’s expression didn’t change one bit.

’’A reasonable request,’’ he said. ’’Consider it done.’’

Roderic raised an eyebrow for a moment.

That response had been a little too quick for his liking.

Taking a slow breath, he continued.

’’My second condition is that I want permission to establish my own private force.’’

The study immediately fell silent.

Arthur’s expression instantly shifted, becoming dead serious.

’’A private force?’’ he repeated coldly.

’’Yes.’’

Arthur’s eyes narrowed even further.

’’Do you understand what you’re asking for?’’

Roderic nodded once.

’’Perfectly.’’

Remaining silent for several more seconds, Arthur finally spoke up again.

’’I highly doubt it,’’ he said. ’’Otherwise, you wouldn’t have asked this.’’

Without even giving Roderic the chance to speak, he continued.

’’Do you know why nobles rarely allow their children to establish private forces? It’s because a private force belongs to the person who built it.’’

Arthur slowly leaned back in his chair.

’’Imagine your eldest brother inherits this barony one day. What would stop you from marching those soldiers straight into this estate and putting a blade to his throat?’’

Roderic didn’t answer immediately.

He obviously understood what his father meant. But that was also the entire reason he’d asked for it under the condition of going to the gathering.

’Only in this way can Margaret not interfere and try to disband my force or call me a traitor later on.’

Without hesitation, Roderic met Arthur’s gaze.

’’I’m not planning to do that,’’ he simply said. ’’But I understand that, from your perspective, those are merely words.’’

Arthur gave a small nod.

For a moment, he remained completely silent, seeming lost in thought.

’’I cannot allow you a full private force,’’ he said slowly. ’’However... I can make a small exception.’’

Roderic’s eyes lit up immediately.

’’You may recruit up to twenty men. Every single one of them must be registered with Captain Harris before they officially join your force.’’

Arthur’s gaze sharpened.

’’You will be fully responsible for them, and the moment a single one of them acts against the interests of House Whitemane...’’

He didn’t need to finish the sentence.

Roderic already knew what would happen. The guilty party would pay with their life, and his right to maintain a private force would vanish with them.

But those consequences didn’t matter since he’d make sure no one would do something so stupid.

’’Deal,’’ Roderic said without hesitation.

A faint smile appeared on Arthur’s face immediately.

’’Good,’’ he said, nodding once.

Arthur slid the envelope back toward him, clearly satisfied.

’’The gathering will be held in a month and a half,’’ he said. ’’Try to use your fame to gain some connections by then.’’

Picking up the golden envelope, Roderic nodded.

’’I’ll be there,’’ he said, pushing himself up. ’’Now, if you’ll excuse me, I want to start training.’’

Arthur let out a quiet chuckle.

’’Good,’’ he said lightly. ’’Also... congratulations on becoming a One Seal Knight. I know you’ve been looking forward to it for a long time.’’

Roderic froze for the briefest moment.

For some reason, those simple words hit him more than they should have.

’’Thank you, Father,’’ he said.

Arthur smiled faintly before waving him off.

’’Go on now. Don’t waste the talent you’ve awakened.’’

Roderic nodded once.

Without another word, he turned and left the room.

As he stepped outside, Edmund’s chubby face greeted him.

’’Did everything go well, Young Master?’’ he asked, bowing slightly.

Roderic smiled as he tucked the envelope into his coat.

’’Yes,’’ he said. ’’You can expect your raise pretty soon.’’

Edmund’s mouth fell wide open.

’’You... you were serious about that?’’ he stammered.

Glancing back at his chubby, middle-aged attendant, Roderic couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

’’Of course I was,’’ he said. ’’I’m a man of my word.’’

Edmund remained frozen in place for a moment before his eyes gradually became moist.

’’Thank you, Young Master,’’ he said, his voice trembling slightly. ’’I’ll continue serving House Whitemane with everything I have.’’

Roderic couldn’t help but shake his head.

’’Don’t get so serious. I know you will.’’

With that, the two of them began walking down the corridor together.

It didn’t take long before Edmund brought Roderic back to his room.

As soon as the door closed behind him and he was finally alone, the smile on Roderic’s face gradually disappeared.

’’A month and a half, huh,’’ he muttered, letting out a sigh. ’’I have much to do before then.’’

After closing his eyes for a moment, he walked over to the wooden chair in front of his desk.

Moments later, a familiar blue window popped up in front of him.

Without hesitation, Roderic pressed the Archive tab.

Several massive blue screens popped up around him immediately.

’’Now that I finally have some funds and permission to build my own force...’’ he muttered with a smile. ’’It’s time to find some talented people.’’

During the two weeks in the forest, he’d spent every rainy day learning how to navigate the Archive.

Although countless functions still remained beyond his understanding, he’d at least learned how to use it efficiently.

His fingers quickly moved across the floating screens, selecting filter after filter.

The Archive loaded for several long seconds.

Then, the blue screens around him began flickering.

Roderic’s eyebrows rose slightly.

’’Only eight?’’
