Chapter 2: 2: System Error?!

Roderic stood completely frozen under the gate leading to the estate.

His eyes were locked on the blue translucent screen in front of him.

[Welcome to the World Throne System! Together, we shall forge you into the world’s greatest sovereign and ascend the World Throne.]

Almost immediately, another screen popped up.

This one being much larger.

For a moment, Roderic truly didn’t know what to say.

’A system?’ he thought, his mouth wide open. ’I actually got a system?!’

Having spent countless nights reading web novels during quiet shifts as a cashier back on Earth, he was more than familiar with the concept.

He’d always imagined what he’d do if he ever found himself in the protagonist’s shoes.

He just never expected it to actually happen!

A grin slowly spread across his face.

’So this is my golden finger.’

Just as he reached out for the first option, a loud voice echoed out behind him.

’’Hey! Get out of the way already!’’

Roderic snapped out of his thoughts, finding several knights on horseback waiting impatiently.

He immediately stepped aside, but his eyes remained fixed on the carriage.

As the knights continued, a large, luxurious carriage adorned with blue banners creaked its way through the gate. At the center of each banner sat a golden stag with gray antlers.

’Eh?’ he thought as memories flooded into his mind. ’The Ironhart family is here?’

They were a neighboring viscountcy, famous throughout the kingdom for their iron mines and master blacksmiths.

But as more memories surfaced, a shitty expression appeared on his face.

’Oh fuck no,’ he thought bitterly. ’I have a fiancée?!’

And from what he could remember... she wasn’t here for a pleasant time.

Covering his face, he quickly disappeared from where he’d been before anyone recognized him.

’Rick might’ve done me a favor,’ he thought, shivering. ’Had it not been for all this dirt on me, I would’ve been forced to go in with them.’

Looking around to make sure no one was paying attention to him, he quickly slipped away toward one of the estate’s stone stables.

Only after finding a quiet corner did he look back at the translucent screen.

A grin immediately returned to his face.

’Finally...’ he thought. ’Some alone time.’

Just as he was about to reach out to the screen, another window popped up in front of him.

[Main Quest]

Defeat the rogue Sword Saint.

Roderic blinked several times.

’’...’’

’’The what now?’’

He rubbed his eyes and looked back at the screen.

But it hadn’t changed in the slightest.

’’You want me to defeat a Sword Saint?’’

His brows twitched.

"Are you out of your damn mind?!" he shouted. "That’s a Sword Saint!"

He couldn’t even defeat some knights-in-training, let alone a powerhouse the entire kingdom looked up to.

As if hearing his complaints, another window silently popped up in front of the first.

[Target]

Name: Dennis Whitemane

Age: 22

Aura Level: Sword Saint

Threat Level: High

Reason: Has killed thousands of civilians after the Whitemane family massacre by Duke Ironhart and King Leon Valoria.

[Reward: Supreme Aura Constitution + 10000 Throne Coins]

Roderic’s mouth fell wide open.

He just stared at the name for a couple of seconds.

’’Dennis?’’ he muttered. ’’Whitemane family massacre...?’’

His head snapped back as he looked around in confusion.

For a moment, he even glanced back at his family’s estate, just to make sure nothing was on fire.

Finally, he stared at the system screen again.

’’I... No, what can I even say?’’

According to his memories, Dennis was his twelve-year-old little brother and the fourth son of the Whitemane barony.

Yet, he was supposed to have gone on a rogue murdering spree?!

’’Yeah, no,’’ he said, shaking his head frantically. ’’I’m not touching that.’’

With a flick of his hand, he swiped the quest window aside.

To his surprise, it obediently slid off to the side of his vision, leaving only the main menu behind.

’’Neat.’’

His finger immediately moved to the first option.

’’Let’s hope you’re better,’’ he muttered, praying internally.

Roderic stared at it for a moment.

’’Whelp,’’ he muttered. ’’That hurts to see.’’

BZZZZT!

The screen suddenly began flickering in front of him.

Large red panels popped up one after another, each with only a single word on it.

[ERROR!]

[ERROR!]

Roderic took a step back immediately.

’’This damn system!’’ he cursed silently. ’’Did I really get a defective one?!’’

Beads of sweat appeared on his face as he remembered the countless stories in which the main character died because of an evil system.

As another deep crimson screen popped up, his heart dropped even further.

[Host data mismatch detected.]

’What does that even mean?!’ Roderic cried out internally, his back already pressed against the wall.

A few seconds passed by in silence.

Roderic held his breath the entire time as he stared at the red screens.

But as nothing else happened, he finally let out a relieved sigh.

’’Thank God,’’ he muttered, closing his eyes. ’’I really thought—’’

’’Really thought what, young master?’’

Roderic nearly jumped.

Standing a few meters away was a rather chubby man in his forties.

His brown hair stood perfectly upright, while a thick mustache curled out between his lips.

A warm smile immediately appeared on Roderic’s face as he looked at the familiar man.

’’Edmund,’’ he greeted with a nod.

His personal attendant, Edmund, gave a respectful bow.

’’Young master.’’

’’Baron Whitemane requests your presence in the reception hall.’’

Roderic’s smile instantly vanished.

’’Now?’’

Edmund nodded once as he took out a handkerchief to wipe his face clean.

’’Lady Catherina has arrived,’’ he said while wiping. ’’And they both seem to have a really urgent topic to talk about.’’

A deep, long sigh escaped Roderic’s mouth.

Edmund merely smiled.

’’I’m sure it will all be fine, young master.’’

Roderic slowly nodded, though his gaze remained on the small, transparent screen above Edmund.

’’I hope so,’’ he muttered.

Unfortunately...

He had a feeling that the exact opposite was about to happen.
