Chapter 1: 1 : System Awakens

’’Again!’’

Crack!

A long whip snapped through the air.

Dozens of warhorses charged across the field in perfect formation, their knights leaning forward as the ground trembled beneath them.

’’Left!’’

The entire formation changed directions almost immediately.

Roderic watched from the wooden fence surrounding the training grounds, resting both his arms on the railing.

’Incredible,’ he thought.

As the horses completely left his vision, Roderic pushed himself off the wooden railing and continued walking over the sandy roads toward the neighboring training ground.

Carefully avoiding some horse shit along the way, it didn’t take long before loud clanging noises echoed through the air.

Roderic came to a halt just outside the outdoor arena, barely able to see the ongoing battle inside.

Two knights collided at the center of the arena.

Both of their practice swords had a strange, flickering blue glow, almost like a flame had wrapped itself around them.

Just then, one of the knights got past the other’s defense.

BAM!

The impact echoed across the training ground as the knight flew back several meters.

’’Again!’’ the instructor barked.

The knight immediately pushed himself off the ground, still holding his ribs with a pained expression.

As the two knights resumed their spar, Roderic’s thoughts drifted elsewhere.

’To think I was transmigrated here,’ he thought. ’What an amazing world.’

A deep sigh left his mouth as he glanced up at the sky.

’In the end, you chose the cowardly way out...’

It had only been a few hours since he’d awakened in a puddle of blood and vomit, only to discover he was living inside someone else’s body.

The original memories of this body had appeared in his mind in waves after that.

’’Just become a knight for the lord and our family will be set for life!’’

’’If you can become a mage, you’ll live the dream life filled with women, riches, and everything you desire!’’

’’All you need is a little bit of talent!’’

Every child in the kingdom grew up hearing those words.

Young Roderic had believed them all his life and spent his days living lavishly as the third son of Baron Whitemane, all while waiting for his talent to awaken.

I mean, he was the son of a noble after all. Why wouldn’t he be talented?

All he needed was for that little bit of talent to finally show itself. Then he’d beat his brother and sister and finally inherit the entire territory.

But that dream slowly began to collapse as time passed.

At fifteen, he didn’t manage to form an Aura Seal to become a knight like his eldest brother.

At sixteen, he didn’t graduate within the top five from the Royal Academy like his sister.

Even now, at eighteen, he still hadn’t awakened anything.

That despair eventually led him to a bottle of poison.

But to this Roderic, it still seemed like an unimaginably foolish choice.

Having spent his entire life as an orphan, working minimum-wage jobs just to survive, he couldn’t help but find the original Roderic’s worries almost luxurious.

’You had three meals a day, a noble title, and incredible amounts of money,’ he thought, shaking his head. ’And you still chose this way out?’

Compared to the life he’d lived on Earth... this was paradise!

’’Oy!’’

A loud shout echoed out behind him.

Roderic snapped out of his thoughts.

Glancing behind him, he saw two young men in light armor walking toward him, both carrying wooden practice swords over their shoulders.

One of the young men was tall and lean, with two large front teeth and a tiny mustache on his lips.

The other was short and chubby, with a face only a mother could love.

When he saw their faces, memories came flooding back to him.

’Rick and Darrel,’ he thought, narrowing his eyes slightly. ’Two knights-in-training from prestigious knight families.’

Seeing their mocking faces with smug smiles, Roderic immediately understood what he was in for.

’’Look at that!’’ Rick said, glancing down at his chubby friend. ’’If it isn’t Young Master Roderic!’’

Darrel wiped a crumb of bread from his mouth.

’’Feeling better?’’ he asked while still munching on something. ’’We heard you collapsed again yesterday.’’

Roderic forced a smile, acting as much like the original Roderic as possible.

"Much better," he replied with a nod. "Thanks for asking."

Silence immediately fell between them.

Rick and Darrel exchanged a strange look before bursting into laughter.

’’Hear that?’’ Darrel snorted, bits of food flying out of his mouth. ’’He thinks we actually care!’’

Rick faked wiping a tear from his eye.

’’He must’ve gone crazy!’’ he said, shaking his head.

Rick looked up at Roderic and pointed his training sword toward him.

’’You really think we’d waste our time worrying about you, failure?’’

Reading the room, Roderic slowly started backing away while maintaining his forced smile.

’’I’m sorry,’’ he quickly said. ’’I’ll take my leave now.’’

’’Hah!’’ Rick scoffed. ’’It’s too late for that.’’

’’How about continuing where we left off yesterday?’’

Before Roderic could even respond, Rick dashed forward, a very faint blue glow flickering around his sword.

BAM!

The wooden sword slammed into Roderic’s chest before he even had time to react.

A sharp pain spread through his chest as the air was knocked out of his lungs.

Roderic immediately collapsed onto his knees, coughing violently.

’Fuck!’

Pain spread through his chest as if one of his ribs had broken.

Roderic coughed several more times before finally managing to draw in a proper breath again.

’That fucking bastard...’ he thought, tightly clenching a handful of sand.

’’There,’’ Rick’s voice echoed above him. ’’That expression suits you much better.’’

Darrel burst into laughter.

’’Truly a waste of air,’’ he said, slapping his leg.

Roderic glanced up slightly, his eyes narrowed.

Before either of them could react, he tossed a handful of sand at Rick.

’’My eyes!’’ Rick screamed, dropping his sword as he frantically rubbed at his face. ’’Damn bastard!’’

’’I’ll get him!’’ Darrel replied, his fat body jiggling as he jogged forward.

Without hesitating, Roderic pushed himself up and sprinted away as fast as he could.

’’Get back here!’’

Darrel’s furious voice echoed out behind him.

Roderic didn’t even bother looking back.

’Try catching me, fatass,’ he thought.

He darted between servants carrying buckets of water and stable hands leading horses toward their paddocks.

Just as he crossed through the gates of his family’s estate, a sharp pain suddenly shot through his head.
