Chapter 23: Take a Shower
Several vehicles had been abandoned nearby. One compact car had crashed into a lamp post, while another remained in the middle of the road with both doors open.
Cain’s Sense detected movement between the parked vehicles.
A zombie emerged from behind a van.
Its body leaned heavily toward one side as a large portion of its waist had already been torn away.
Two more followed from the dormitory entrance.
Evelyne instinctively searched for her weapon.
Her expression changed when she remembered that she had left the javelin near the cafeteria.
Cain glanced at her empty hands.
"You forgot your javelin."
"You were the one who dragged me away!"
"I didn’t tell you to leave it behind."
"You said we had unfinished business!"
"And you became too excited to remember your weapon."
Evelyne’s face reddened.
"Shut up!"
The first zombie charged.
Cain unsheathed his sword and slashed his sword casually.
The zombie’s upper body fell onto the pavement.
He didn’t leave it alive for Evelyne this time, as they were in a hurry and she had no weapon with her.
He reversed the sword and pierced the side of its head.
[Ding! You have killed a Level 13 Zombie.]
Afterward, he killed a few more zombies on their way to the dorm.
The moment he killed the last zombie that was located near the entrance, he managed to level up his level to level 12.
[Ding! You have leveled up to Level 12, obtaining 3 Free Stat Points.]
He quickly put the 3 Free Stat Points to Agility.
[Stats]: Strength: 66 / Agility: 74 (+10) / Physique: 39 / Sense: 39 (+5) / Mana: 187 / Magic: 87
Cain nodded in satisfaction and closed the panel.
They approached the dormitory entrance.
The glass doors had already been forced open. Blood covered part of the lobby floor, but Cain could not hear movement inside.
He entered first and Evelyne stayed close behind him.
The lobby had been abandoned in a hurry.
Shoes and bags were scattered near the seating area. A vending machine had fallen onto its side, and several drinks had rolled across the floor.
However, there were no corpses.
Cain searched the first floor.
Every room he checked was empty.
Then, he quickly searched up the entire dormitory and found nothing.
"Fortunately, this place is empty," he said.
"Find a room with clean clothes."
"Why do I have to find it?"
"You’re the one who needs them."
Cain walked toward the shared bathroom.
"I’m washing too."
Evelyne looked at the dried blood covering his jacket.
Cain had fought continuously since the apocalypse began.
His clothing carried blood from the dormitory, the training hall, and the hospital.
Several sections had become stiff after drying.
Evelyne stopped complaining and entered the nearest unlocked bedroom.
The room belonged to a female student.
Photographs had been attached to the wall beside the bed, and several university uniforms hung inside the wardrobe.
Evelyne searched through the clothes until she found several items close to her size.
She took a clean blouse and a dark skirt before entering the women’s bathroom.
Water still flowed from the showers. Even though the pressure was weaker than normal, it was enough.
She remained beneath it for several minutes, scrubbing her face and chest until every remaining trace of Cain had disappeared.
Her mind refused to remain quiet as she remembered the way he had kissed her, the way she kneeled in front of him.
Worst of all, she remembered agreeing to it willingly after he offered to help her become stronger.
Evelyne pressed both hands against her face.
"What the hell did I just do?"
She had disliked Cain since childhood. At least, that was what she always told herself.
He had never behaved respectfully around her. He mocked her whenever they met and rarely reacted to her appearance the way other men did.
Now, within a single afternoon, she had allowed him to touch her more intimately than anyone else had.
Her face burned red again.
In the men’s bathroom across the corridor, Cain removed his ruined clothing and stood beneath another shower.
The water quickly turned red as dried blood washed from his arms and hair.
Cain scrubbed himself thoroughly.
The cold water helped calm the remaining heat inside his body.
He had nearly lost control again when Evelyne confronted him beneath the tree.
Cain knew that he needed to be more careful.
The apocalypse had removed most social restraints, but acting recklessly could still create unnecessary trouble.
Professor Irina had already witnessed enough. If she began speaking about it, Cain doubted he would hear the end of Ron’s mockery.
Cain finished washing and searched the nearby rooms as he left his belongings in the Auditorium so that he could have more space in his inventory.
Inside one wardrobe, he found a clean university uniform.
The black jacket was his size. A loose white shirt had been folded beneath it.
Cain put them on. The shirt was slightly larger than he normally wore, but it allowed him to move easily.
He also found dark trousers and changed into them.
Cain looked at his reflection in a cracked mirror. The clean clothes made him appear far less threatening.
Only the sword at his waist and the Windstep Boots revealed that he had spent the day fighting.
Cain returned to the corridor and found that Evelyne had not finished yet.
He leaned against the wall and waited.
Several minutes later, the bathroom door opened.
Evelyne stepped outside wearing a clean white blouse and a dark pleated skirt. Her white-red hair remained damp.
Without the dirt and blood covering her, her beauty became even more noticeable.
Cain looked at her from head to toe.
Evelyne noticed.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You’re staring again."
"I was checking the clothes."
"Why?"
"To see whether they fit."
Evelyne crossed her arms.
"They fit perfectly."
Cain’s gaze moved toward her chest.
The borrowed blouse was struggling.
"I wouldn’t say perfectly."
Evelyne followed his gaze.
Her face darkened.
"Pervert."
She returned to the room and began searching the wardrobe again.
Since she did not live inside the university, Evelyne had no personal clothes at the auditorium.
She packed several blouses into a travel bag. Underwear and comfortable sports clothing followed.
Cain watched her continue stuffing items inside.
"Are you planning to take all of them?"
"I need clothes."
"You don’t need twelve outfits during an apocalypse."
"I’m not wearing the same thing every day."
Cain shook his head.
Even after the world ended, Evelyne still cared about her appearance.
He allowed her to continue.
The travel bag became full, but Evelyne found another backpack and placed more clothes inside.
Cain finally stepped forward.
"That’s enough."
"But there are still useful clothes here."
"You can come back later."
Evelyne wanted to argue, but Cain waved his hand and put the backpack inside his inventory and said, "We should finish our agreement first."
Cain then looked at her information as he wanted to upgrade her Talent and Skill.
