Chapter 8: Chapter 8: How about I visit your room tonight? I’ll take care of you

Thirty Chapters.

That wasn’t nearly enough for Eiros to fully grasp how this world actually worked. Even knowing that this world’s power system was called Stigmata, that didn’t mean he understood the deepest secrets behind it.

That was exactly why, even as awful as he felt, he couldn’t tear his eyes away from the Professor.

"We all know perfectly well that not every human is born with a Stigmata. Some people are born with one, while others are simply destined to live as ordinary humans."

"So then—is being born with a Stigmata really an advantage?"

Listening to the professor’s lengthy explanation, Eiros let himself sink into quiet thought.

’Now that I think about it, I actually have three Stigmata.’

Could he even call that lucky?

Identity Shift was self-explanatory enough. Death Reset was the Stigmata he’d already been relying on lately. But then—what was Stigmata Imprint even good for?

Eiros could probably make a few guesses. But unlike Identity Shift, that last one seemed to carry a few too many possible meanings for him to pin down.

Letting his mind wander, Eiros glanced around at the number of students in the Other classroom. There weren’t that many—somewhere around twenty students total.

Each of them had been born with some uniquely bizarre type of Stigmata, unusual enough that it couldn’t be sorted into any normal class.

That made him wonder.

’Could one of these people actually turn out to be an important character in this webtoon?’

Eiros had no way of knowing, but he could take a few guesses based on the standard rule that important characters always came with a striking appearance.

After that, Eiros let the thought go. He turned his focus back to whatever the professor was explaining. He didn’t want to think about Erness even a little—he honestly hoped class would somehow run longer than usual. That way, at least, he wouldn’t have to worry about her showing up.

Unfortunately, whenever someone hopes something won’t end, the exact opposite tends to happen.

Break time arrived far sooner than he’d hoped. The academy bell rang out in the distance, and the students cheered with delight—everyone except Eiros himself.

Even though he’d known this moment was coming eventually, Eiros couldn’t stop the fear creeping in. Still, he also knew he couldn’t keep living like this forever.

Sooner or later, he was going to get killed if he couldn’t figure out how to react properly in front of that ghost girl.

So, at the very least, he needed something that could let him defend himself. Unfortunately, that only reminded him all over again of just how little he actually knew about this world.

With a rough exhale, Eiros rubbed his face.

Now that he thought about it, he’d actually completed the system’s quest. And as if responding to that very thought, the familiar transparent blue screen appeared before him.

[QUEST COMPLETE]

Reward: x3 Awakened Tier Soul Stones

[Would the Host like to receive the reward now?]

[Yes] // [Later]

Eiros blinked for a moment, then his eyes lit up.

’This is it!’

The answer came to him right then and there. What he needed to do, and exactly how to do it—the plan he’d worked out the night before suddenly felt far more achievable now.

Soul stones could help him grow stronger. They were an absolutely critical resource for building up power in this world. And precisely because they mattered so much, their distribution couldn’t just be handed out freely to anyone.

Given Eiros’s current position, he worried that whatever soul stones he might scrape together over an entire month would leave his own progress crawling along at an unbearably slow pace.

But if he kept clearing the system’s quests one after another, how fast could he actually get stronger?

His heart pounded, filled with a fresh sliver of hope.

His hands clenched into tight fists under the desk.

And then...

"Darling, are you here...?"

His body jolted. That voice, familiar in its softness, its sweet atmosphere—Eiros turned his head, stiff as a machine.

"...Oh?"

A small sound escaped his lips as he saw Erness greeting him, a sweet smile spread across her face.

By now, only a handful of students remained in the classroom. Everyone else had already filed out, Leiden included, who’d gone off to the bathroom.

Watching the ghost girl acting so adorable made Eiros’s heart pound—though for an entirely different reason than she probably intended.

Still, unlike before, he made an effort not to act like a fool this time.

"...Were you looking for me?"

Eiros spoke, his voice sounding fairly normal despite a slight tremor running through it. But that alone was enough.

At the same time, his mind screamed a string of desperate reassurances at itself.

’Erness is just an ordinary girl, she’s just a pretty, ordinary student, she’s not a ghost, she is genuinely not a ghost, she’s not evil, she’s not sadistic, she’s kind, I’m her boyfriend and she’s my girlfriend.’

Of course, that jumbled, nonsensical stream of thought did absolutely nothing to help—if anything, it only dragged him right back to the very thing he feared most.

Watching Erness walk closer, Eiros pictured driving a nail straight through his own feet into the floor, just to keep himself from bolting.

Then, the closer Erness got, the more Eiros noticed that the ghost girl, despite her strikingly pale skin, also carried a scent—soft, gentle, and cool.

It felt like standing face to face with winter itself. A scent so distinct, and strangely pleasant.

"Hehe, you didn’t run away this time."

Erness whispered into his ear, her breath tickling against his skin. Ignoring just how unsettling the ghost girl’s smile was, Eiros forced one onto his own face.

"...Yeah."

"Should we head to the cafeteria?"

"Just the two of us?"

"Don’t you like it being just the two of us?"

Eiros swallowed hard. Meanwhile, Erness wrapped her arms around his arm, pulling him into an embrace.

He could feel that soft, generous pressure pushing against his arm. But was this really the time to be thinking about that?

No. Absolutely not.

"That’s a great idea... Alright, let’s go, just the two of us."

"Hehe."

Erness let out a small laugh. It really was a genuinely pleasant, perfectly normal-sounding laugh—like a girl utterly smitten, hopelessly in love with her boyfriend. But to Eiros, it carried an entirely different, far more terrifying meaning.

"Darling, you’ve been sweating a lot more than usual lately."

"..."

"And your movements are so stiff too. Is something wrong with your body?"

"..."

"I’m really worried about you. How about I visit your room tonight? I’ll take care of you."

"...Please don’t."
