Chapter 38: Thinking about me?
Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Thinking about me?
"So, what are all of you doing here?"
Eiros asked them one by one. Cayena, busy with her duties as vice president of the student council, couldn’t stay too long, and decided to leave once she’d confirmed Eiros was okay.
After a brief examination, Eiros was also found to be in stable physical condition. So he could leave the medical room whenever he wanted.
"Ah, visiting you, obviously. Do you have any idea how long you’ve been asleep?"
Hearing that, Eiros went quiet for a moment, then shook his head. Valkas grinned.
"Three days! You’ve been out cold for three whole days with no sign of waking up."
"...Seriously?"
Eiros gave an awkward smile. Well, that was surprising, sure. Sleeping for three straight days after everything that had happened seemed pretty reasonable, right?
That explained why his whole body felt so stiff and why he was starving at the same time. He had no idea how many pieces of fruit he’d already eaten.
"So... what happened?"
"With what?"
"The situation. After the attack."
Thinking back to what Cayena had said. Could Eiros at least claim he’d successfully saved the Saintess and the Imperial siblings?
Valkas shrugged.
"Well, you could say it got pretty chaotic...?"
".....?"
"A lot of students decided to withdraw from the academy."
After that, Valkas filled Eiros in on everything he needed to know. Things like how the nobles had reacted, one tower keeper rushing straight back, and the Tower Keeper of Wisdom, Estiel, who apparently didn’t look to be doing so well.
On top of that...
"A hero...? What’s that supposed to mean?"
Eiros didn’t know how to react hearing that come out of Valkas’s mouth. Of course he didn’t.
Valkas had just announced that he’d been officially crowned the hero of the first-year class.
"Look around you."
Following that suggestion. Eiros glanced around the room and found Lovia busy opening a stack of gift boxes stuffed with all sorts of random items.
"Eiros! Look, look at this! Isn’t this that famous Santa pajama set? Oh, and this! A statue of the first hero?!"
Off to the side, Alen was holding a bouquet of roses. Well, not exactly focused on the bouquet itself, but on a letter and a heart-shaped chocolate hanging beneath it.
Alen ate the chocolate while reading the letter. He glanced it over for a moment, then looked at Eiros.
"...Eiros, apparently there’s a first-year girl who wants to be your side chick."
Then he froze, a shudder running down his spine, and tore the letters to shreds.
"Forget it. Never cheat. Your girlfriend is terrifying, she’ll kill you if you cheat."
"....."
Well, seemed like there really were way too many things scattered around this medical room, huh?
Eiros gave an awkward smile.
He looked at the three of them, then tried to steer the topic toward something simpler, lighter.
"By the way, why don’t I see Godon anywhere? I figured you guys would all be together."
Then, all three of them froze in place, dead calm. Alen dropped the chocolate right out of his mouth, Valkas nearly slipped, and Lovia accidentally tore a piece of clothing.
Next—
Slam—!!
The door burst open, revealing Godon, his face dark and grim.
"...Traitors! All of you, traitors."
"T-this... G-godon, it’s not li—"
"—I know! Ever since the three of you got put in the combat class while I got stuck in the mixed class! That’s exactly why you always leave me behind. This is discrimination, I’m suing."
Then Eiros heard Valkas mutter beside him.
"Damn it. I completely forgot about Godon."
His smile went tense, stiff.
But Godon, still furious, suddenly locked eyes with Eiros and immediately went quiet.
Lovia, quick on the uptake, caught on instantly. Right! Godon didn’t even know yet that Eiros had woken up!
Weighing that, she stood up, dug through the table, and found a container of fried chicken split into three boxes.
After that, she stood beside Eiros.
"T-tadaaa! Surprise...?"
Alen watched Lovia with a completely flat expression, then felt something click in his head, and that sudden realization made him clear his throat as he grabbed the bouquet and walked over, handing it to Godon.
"Your face looks awful. It’s not like we forgot about you, idiot, we just wanted to surprise you. Look, don’t these flowers look nice? The chocolate looks pretty good too, right?"
"Seriously, look, there’s even fried chicken here."
Valkas, watching the two of them act, couldn’t hold back a smile. Impressive, honestly.
It’d be fun to join in too, so with remarkable improvisation, Valkas grabbed a random gift box off the floor and stepped closer.
"We’re good friends, right, Godon? There’s no way we’d just leave you behind. Look, this one’s yours, I picked it out thinking of you specifically."
He rubbed the bridge of his nose, looking proud of himself.
Meanwhile, Godon went quiet, then...
"...Sorry for accusing you guys like that. I guess, I guess I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions first. You guys are the best!"
Wow.
Godon actually bought that whole act, planned out in a matter of seconds?
The three of them wore forced, tense smiles. But seeing Godon’s reaction, they visibly relaxed.
As for Eiros?
He honestly had no idea how to react anymore.
’Since when did whatever I have just get snatched up by everyone else like this?’
His smile looked stiff on his face. But what could he do about it?
Then, right then, he heard Godon’s voice, low:
"Um... Alen? Why’s the chocolate already gone?"
"Ah? Eh?"
"Valkas... Why underwear? I mean, do you think I’m running low on pink-patterned underwear or something?"
"Hmm? What?? Underwear... Wait, what do you mean, running low?"
Whether it was the gift from Alen or Valkas, neither one of them was quite right.

Either way, Godon, who’d been on the verge of a full-blown depression, cheered right back up the moment Lovia handed him that fried chicken. Yeah, nothing beat fried chicken.
So, after chatting a bit longer, Eiros decided to leave the medical room and part ways with the rest of the webtoon’s cast.
He walked alone through a corridor mostly empty of students. He’d been asked to do that, since he might’ve drawn far too much attention wandering among the crowd of first-years otherwise.
And in that solitude, Eiros couldn’t help but think about Erness.
’Where is she?’
It wasn’t anything in particular, just that Eiros figured, if he was going to wake up from his coma, he’d expect Erness to be the one to greet him first, given her personality.
But strangely enough, even hours after he’d woken up, there was still no sign of Erness anywhere.
’I wonder what she’s up to.’
Eiros remembered it clearly. He never would’ve managed to save the Saintess and the Imperial siblings without Erness.
Besides, he had a few questions he wanted to ask her. Actually, quite a lot of them.
So, letting out a rough sigh, Eiros was heading back toward his dorm when he suddenly felt something familiar. That soft, wintry scent, silver hair falling over his shoulder, and finally, that gentle, soothing voice, like a lullaby drifting through the air.
"Thinking about me?"
Eiros went still for a moment, feeling a small hand wrap around his waist, reaching up toward his stomach.
Then, Eiros felt his shoulders loosen slightly as an awkward smile crept onto his face.
"...How about you try showing up the normal way for once?"
"Hehe~ I love seeing you startled like that."
