Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Yes, very clearly
Sunlight seeped through the room’s window. It showed such bright weather, so starkly contrasting with what had just happened.
Of course, the fate of living beings in this world, regardless of what occurs, regardless of how unfortunate or how fortunate. The world will never stop, it keeps moving and will never pause just to wait for someone.
Eiros let out a sigh, his gaze staring blankly out the window. Then, he shifted his eyes and massaged his forehead.
The pain, the sensation of being shattered and everything that had happened to him still felt so vivid. However, he did not let it disturb him—no, it was more that he was trying not to be disturbed.
Once again, the world would not wait for him while he was in despair.
’There has to be... There has to be a way, right...? Yes, I refuse to believe that I will end up like Cray.’
Eiros chuckled quietly.
Of course. He also had his system; perhaps he would receive a reward in the form of medicine later. Therefore, he needed to be patient.
Leave that problem to his future self, and let him focus on his present self. He had only woken up a few minutes ago, and found himself laughing in amusement.
I mean, how could he not?
He had apparently still survived and lived to see another day.
’I truly thought everything was about to end back then.’
After all, what had happened at that time left a very deep scar on Eiros. It was not just about the pain and the devastation, but also the anger towards those who did this to him.
If... if a seed of corruption was what they possessed. Did that not mean, whoever planted that seed in his body became the cause of the misfortune that befell him now?
Because, if only that seed had not existed. Many things might have gone smoothly, without any worries at all. But, unfortunately, this world had not been kind to him.
Eiros closed his eyes.
Klik—!
The door to the room opened, revealing a woman he recognised walking in. Ah, a familiar face. With long black hair and light blue pupils.
It was Cayena Clair, or one could also say, Eiros’s older sister. She stepped inside with a leather pouch in her hand, stared at Eiros, then froze with her mouth open.
"Oh..." For a moment, that voice was the only thing filling the silent room.
Thud—!
Then the pouch dropped to the floor. Cayena blinked, then stepped closer and stared at him sharply.
"Look, our hero has finally decided to wake up."
She turned her back to Eiros. She opened one of the plastic bags on the table and retrieved some apples.
Eiros was confused about how he should react, so he simply remained silent. Yes, he just silently watched Cayena cutting some apples for him with her shoulders trembling.
It was difficult for Eiros when he realised that he was not Cayena’s biological sibling. Rather, an infiltrator who happened to pick up the body of her already deceased younger brother.
That was why he felt awkward, yet still felt he should at least say something.
He felt his throat tighten. There were many things that could be said in this situation and act as a proper younger sibling and family member.
However, Eiros did not want to be petty by truly lying and acting like the original Eiros. So, he merely said in a low voice:
"...Sorry."
Just that simple sentence, yet it made Cayena stop peeling the apple. Half a minute passed in silence. Before finally, the sound of the knife touching the board returned as Cayena resumed peeling the apple.
"You didn’t die."
"....?"
"Don’t do that again. At the very least, you were lucky this time. I could not at all imagine you dying, you know?"
"Ah, that’s—"
"—Running to save someone in need. That was heroic. But, what about you? One small mistake, it was genuinely close, and you wouldn’t have been able to save yourself."
That made Eiros fall completely silent.
Cayena sighed. At that moment, she wiped her face before finally turning around and looking at Eiros with her clear, light blue pupils.
"I don’t know, since when you started acting like that."
She placed the cut fruits on the table. Eiros looked at them for a moment, then laughed awkwardly.
"Well, I guess... I’ve changed...?"
Cayena seemed about to say something.
Braaak—!!
However, the door suddenly opened once more with the sound of someone being so noisy.
"Yeah! That’s what happened! I’m not lying! I really almost defeated that ugly monster, I only failed because I let my guard down for a moment due to its rotten bad breath, you know?!"
"Pfttt...! Just say that you lost. Why are you being this stubborn? I remember, you came out from the rocks with a pale face while holding your stomach. You threw up, didn’t you? Puahahaaa!!"
"That’s not stupid! I didn’t throw up! Do you think I’m like you?! Who just sees something a little gross and immediately relapses, huh?!"
"Umh... Guys, can you quiet down? This is the medical room."
"Shut up, Alen! Stay out of this, I’m going to make this person—"
"Oh, wow, Eiros is awake."
"Huh, what? Ah, stop trying to trick me, I know you—"
"—He really is awake, you know."
"....Seriously?"
The ones who came were three people. It was Lovia, who seemed to be standing on tiptoe trying to pull the hair of Valkas, who was pressed against the wall and protecting his hair, followed by Alen, who wanted to pass but had no way due to the two of them bickering in front of the doorway.
Their gazes all stopped on Eiros, and then next...
"Hey, Eiros, you saw it, right?! Back then, Lovia came out from the rocks and threw up after smelling the bad breath of that monster that could disguise itself as a rock!"
"H-huh?! That’s not how it was, right, Eiros?! You clearly saw how strong I was at that time. I even had time to take over for Alen to fight on the front lines, right? Right? Right?"
Alen closed his eyes at the argument and sighed. He stood between them, raising both his hands, each pulling Valkas and Lovia apart.
"Come on, this is the medical house... We can’t disturb the sick people in he—"
Whap—!!
Whether it was Varkas or Lovia, both simultaneously slapped Alen’s face and pushed him backwards.
"Right?! Eiros?! I know, you are my good friend, and as good friends, we won’t lie to each other. So, you must be on my side, right?!"
"Huh?! What’s this good friend, good friend nonsense?! Look at me, Eiros! Strength is above everything else, and I showed it to you well, didn’t I?!?!?"
"Ugh..."
With the two of them continuing to argue, Alen with a darkened face looking sad with floating blue lines, and then finally Eiros and Cayena, who seemed frozen in place. A forced smile appeared on Eiros’s face as he scratched the back of his head, then shrugged.
"Well, forget about all that nonsense," He said, before finally a small, confident smile appeared on his face. "I mean, we can all agree that I was the one who contributed the most earlier, right?"
If they were indeed arguing to determine who was better between the two of them and asking Eiros to decide the best one at the cost of betraying one of them.
Then, just act normally. I mean, betray them both and say that you are better than them.
I mean, that is what happened, right?
Seeing both of their faces freeze, Eiros wanted to laugh when Alen suddenly spoke up.
"That’s impossible. I am better."
He stared at Eiros while nodding.
"Yes, very clearly."
