Chapter 38: Almost Time for a Reward

As the girls gathered in the kitchen and cooked something that smelled amazing, Kian came to the living room and just stared at Hua Shulong, frowning.

He couldn’t relax quiet yet. The outside world was not as peaceful as it seemed. The sect master was dying, the sect was entering a chaotic period, and soon, the storm would begin.

Kian had to decide what to do from here on.

But before that...

Frowning, Kian covered his hand with a cloth and used it to pick the jade pendant on Hua Shulong’s neck. Unlike his expectations of a hot potato, it was just like any other jade.

But that didn’t make Kian lay down his guard.

This might be linked to the real reason as to why Hua Shulong had become a woman. Maybe even his personality shift was due to this. What had happened?

’This is clearly the cliche situation of a ring grandpa becoming your master. If I am right, this jade contains such a master.’

Kian observed the jade.

"Hey, spirit, come out. Let’s talk."

The jade didn’t budge.

Kian slammed the jade against the floor hard enough to crack it. But instead of the jade, only the floor cracked.

"Not afraid of being broken?" Kian chuckled.

He could indeed try to use his Qi swords to break it. But Kian didn’t want to interact with the jade using his Qi at all. Who knows what could go wrong?

"Fang Ping!" Kian said. "I know who you are. Come out. Meet me. Or I will go give this jade to the sect elders!"

This time, his words were clearly effective.

The jade trembled for a moment before a wan faced old man appeared in thin air.

Kian squinted.

"How do you know my name?" the man asked gloomily.

"I know a lot of things."

They stared at each other for a long time, then Kian said: "Your previous owner is useless now. It is time you changed hands. Why don’t you follow me?"

"You want me to follow you?"

"Indeed."

The old man hesitated, looking at the unconscious Hua Shulong. But then, his eyes moved to Kian. Indeed, Kian was more talented, more capable, and more suitable to be his disciple.

"From your expression, it seems you are willing."

Kian sat down on the couch, looking at the spirit calmly. "Now tell me, what’s going on with Hua Shulong? Why is he a girl?"

"So you don’t know a lot, huh?"

Kian shamelessly kept looking at it.

The old man shook his head, saying: "Hua Shulong practiced the Yin Insect Scripture. It is a very strong technique that allowed him to control dangerous insects even as a 4th stage Qi builder."

"Oh?" Kian was intrigued. "Did training that technique make him a woman?"

"No, but because he trained in that technique, he was noticed by the insect king of Mount Amara. The king really liked him, and wanted to take him into his harem."

Kian’s face changed. "And?"

"The king didn’t want a man in his harem, so he just used a spell to transform Hua Shulong into a woman. Now, the one sitiing infront of you is indeed Hua Shulong, he is just a she now. And he has been hiding that for years."

Kian looked at Hua Shulong with pity.

"Well, forget about that. Do you think I should leave the sect?"

The old man nodded. "As soon as you can."

Kian became serious.

The old man continued: "The sect master’s death would be followed by tens of invasions from other sects. Qi Builders would be nothing but fodder. You should leave before the outside world is surrounded by other sects."

"You are indeed useful," Kian said, smiling.

Though of course, Kian had the great suspicion that this old bastard was waiting for a good chance to possess him.

But the words did make him more careful. Perhaps, it was better to leave the sect as soon as possible.

"So, are you now allying with me?" Kian asked.

The old man sighed, then nodded. "I would like to guide you in your path of cultivation. In return, I hope you can find me a Spirit Vessel."

"So be it."

A familiar chime rang through Kian’s mind—a pure, crystalline note that had become as natural as his own heartbeat.

Words etched themselves across his vision in cold blue script.

[You have successfully stolen "Fang Ping" from "Hua Shulong."]

[Fortune +200]

The numbers settled beneath his awareness, stacking onto whatever tally he’d carried before.

Kian didn’t move, didn’t let his expression shift, but something warm and satisfied curled low in his chest. Eighty points. He could convert those into Qi Sparks later, push himself closer to the next breakthrough.

A system screen popped up before him, showing his progress in the current quest.

[Main Quest: Hua Shulong]

[Subquests:] Steal Hua Mia, the sister (Complete)

Steal Hua Jia, the sister (Complete)

Steal Hua Feimei, the mother (Reward: 200 Fortune)

Steal Fang Ping, the master (completed)

Steal all Four (Special Reward: Absorb a unique aspect of the main target’s cultivation)

Kian wasn’t in a rush to convince Feimei. For now, he just felt glad about all the progress he had already made.

Meanwhile, Fang Ping’s form wavered like heat haze, then collapsed inward with a soft sigh, coiling back into the jade until the stone glowed faintly green for a single heartbeat and went dark again.

"I cannot stay outside for long," its voice came. "And only people I allow can see me. Usually."

"I see."

Kian tucked the pendant into the cloth and set it aside on the low table, well away from his skin, well away from any accidental contact with his Qi. He didn’t trust the old ghost, and he didn’t need a master squatting in his meridians, but the information was good and the fortune was better, so for now the spirit could ride along in his pocket like a particularly venomous pet.

He settled into a cross-legged position on the floor, back against the couch where Hua Shulong’s unconscious form lay draped, and closed his eyes.

The house was full of voices—Feimei’s calm instructions in the kitchen, Mia’s eager questions, the clatter of pots and the hiss of oil hitting a hot pan—but he let them fade into a distant hum, focusing inward on the steady flow of Qi through his own channels.

Stage Five level of Qi sparks sat in his body like a coiled spring, dense and deep. The meditation itself wasn’t deep; he wasn’t trying to cultivate or break through anything.

He was simply settling the turbulence of the last few hours, letting the tension drain from his shoulders and the sharp edges of his thoughts soften into a quiet readiness.

It was also time he used the new Fortune Points.
