Chapter 37: Unexpected Changes

Jiao Yin’s eyes had rolled back into her head. Her spine arched off the floor like a bow being drawn past breaking point, and a thin, keening sound escaped her throat—not a scream, but something worse, something animal and terrified.

Kian was across the room before Hua Jia could even finish her gasp.

He caught Jiao Yin’s shoulders as she convulsed, her limbs jerking against the floorboards. A thread of bloody foam bubbled at the corner of her mouth.

"Jiao Yin!"

He pressed her flat, one hand on her chest, and the Qi inside her was a storm—wild, formless, crashing through meridians that had never learned to hold it.

Her heart hammered against his palm like a caged bird battering itself to death.

"Hey!"

The convulsion stopped as suddenly as it started.

Her body went limp, head lolling sideways, and for one horrible second Kian thought she had died right there on his floor.

Then her chest rose—a shallow, ragged breath—and the tension in his own shoulders released by a fraction.

’What is going on?’

He pressed two fingers to her dantian and sent a thin probing thread of his own Qi into her system.

That Qi was quickly dispersed and send back out of her body.

That was enough for him to figure out what had gone wrong.

"What’s wrong with her?" Jia asked, a bit worried.

She stared at the limp girl on the floor, one hand white-knuckling the edge of his sleeve. "Is she dying?"

"Jiao Yin had always leaked Qi from herself. It had probably been years since the leakage started. But she never knew such a thing was happening to her own body."

Jia blinked.

"But in this meditative session, she probably sensed Qi for real. And as soon as she sensed it, she must have also sensed the overwhelming leakage of her own Qi."

When she didn’t know it was happening, it did no harm to her. But now, it must be as painful as drowning.

Jia was shocked. "She sensed Qi? This quickly?"

"It is probably not a good thing for her, though."

"Wait, my mom is pretty good with medicine. Should I go bring her here?"

"Immediately!"

Jia was out the door before the word finished leaving Kian’s mouth. Her footsteps hammered down the hallway, and he heard her voice—sharp, urgent—cutting through the murmured conversation in the living room.

The murmuring stopped. More footsteps, faster now, and then the door slid open again with enough force to rattle the frame.

Hua Feimei swept into the room. Her travel cloak was gone, leaving only the burgundy outer robe and the pale silk beneath, and her red eyes were already glowing faintly at the edges as she crossed to where Jiao Yin lay.

She didn’t ask for permission. She didn’t ask for an explanation. She simply knelt, pressed two fingers to the girl’s throat, then her wrist, then her dantian, and her expression became calm.

Mia appeared in the doorway behind her, one hand braced against the frame, her long hair disheveled and her cheeks still blotchy from tears.

She took one look at Jiao Yin’s slack face and the blood-flecked foam at her lips, and her hand flew to her mouth. "What happened?"

Jia said: "Kian slapped her to unconsciousness!"

"Shut up," Kian said, giving Jia a smack in the head.

"She sensed Qi," he said. "And then she convulsed and passed out."

Hua Feimei didn’t answer right away. She pressed her palm flat against Jiao Yin’s stomach, directly over the lower dantian, and her red eyes flared brighter.

Blood Demon Eyes saw things normal eyes just could not.

It was no wonder Feimei was good with medicine.

A thread of crimson Qi—dense and controlled in a way that spoke of decades of practice despite her low cultivation stage—snaked from her fingertips and sank into the girl’s skin.

Jiao Yin’s body jerked once, a full-body spasm that lifted her shoulders off the floor, and then she went limp again.

Hua Feimei’s frown completely eased. "She just sensed Qi and saw her own Qi leakage. Years of pain probably affected her all at once. Don’t worry, she will wake up in a few hours."

"Why does her Qi leak in the first place?"

Feimei shrugged. "She probably ate a very poisonous Qi fruit when she was a kid. It didn’t hurt her body but it sure did wreck her Qi pathways."

"Is it fixeable?"

"Yeah, and pretty easily. This is like a fever to a cultivator. Since she seemed to have sensed Qi, she would start healing on her own anyway. But the self cleansing process would probably paralyze her body for a few weeks, or even a few months."

"But still, she sensed Qi in one day!" Mia said, shock evident in her face.

She had been trying for years!

YEARS!

Feimei shook her head. "It’s probably because of the leakage that she was able to sense it so easily. There is always fortune hidden in every calamity indeed."

She then looked at Kian.

"For now, just let the girl rest. Then, when she wakes up, feed her something nutritious."

Then, her eyes moved to Jia, her expression complicated. "Why did you leave?" she asked softly.

Jia hid behind Kian. "I just wanted..."

She didn’t know what to say, so she fell silent.

Kian shook his head at Feimei. "Give the girls some time, woman."

Hua Feimei nodded.

Mia said: "Jia..."

"You heard Kian. I just need some time, Mia!"

Their mother took a deep breath, then said: "Who wants some good food? I checked the kitchen and we have all the ingredients."

"Me," Kian said without hesitation.

Mia raised her hand as well, smiling.

Jia hesitated. Kian pointed at her: "Make some for this girly as well."

Hua Feimei smiled and left with a sideeye. Mia quickly followed, a big smile rising on her face as well.

Just before she left the room though, she returned and gave Kian a deep kiss on his cheek before running back to her mother.

"Looks like someone is really happy," Jia said, huffing to hide her own smile. "It’s been quite some time since I saw her so giddy. It feels nice."

"And who do you think the reason for that is?"

Kian’s eyebrows quirked at her.

She grabbed his collar with a hand and pulled him to her face. "Shut up."

They kissed.

Kian’s tongue played in her mouth and for once, she let his tongue have its way without trying to dominate him. When they broke away, she licked her lips, then said: "Once more."

"In your dreams."

She rolled her eyes. "Let me go help in the kitchen. You do you."

He kissed her again.
