Chapter 69: Spoiler
April
I had no idea what to say. My heart stopped beating for a moment.
The room went completely still around us, the gentle hum of the ceiling fan fading into the background.
I stared at Abigail, my hands gripping the edge of the mattress as her question echoed over and over in my head.
I couldn’t answer.
Am I in love with Angel?
The thought scared me more than I wanted to admit. I tried to trace back through the last few weeks, but every memory led straight to her sharp eyes, her annoying dimples, and the wild, unpredictable heat she brought into my life.
I’m spending more time with her than I do with myself. Even when she isn’t around, something always makes me think of her.
Her smell, her arrogant voice, the way she looked at me like she owned every breath I took.
It was exhausting, but I couldn’t shake her loose from my brain.
Despite her annoying behavior, I still find her fascinating and wanting more of her...
I took a slow breath, adjusting my glasses up my nose before looking back up at Abigail’s waiting face.
I gave Abigail a convincing smile.
"I have no idea about my feelings for her, and I’m still trying to figure out why I feel what I feel for her."
"I’m sure you are going to figure it out. Your heart is going to tell you, and you should listen to it, unlike somebody who is in denial," Abigail said.
She bumped her shoulder against mine, a knowing look passing through her eyes as she crossed her legs on the bed.
I chuckled a little.
"Spoiler..."
I shook my head, trying to play off the nervous flutter in my stomach.
Then she leaned closer and whispered as if she was about to tell me a top government secret.
She brought her head right next to mine, her eyes shining with absolute confidence.
"She is falling for you. She denies it, but I can see the way you’re changing her. Just keep invading her space, and I’m sure by this time next year, you and Angel will be an item."
Hearing her say that, I started laughing like she had just told me the funniest joke in the world.
A sharp, breathless laugh burst out of my throat before I could stop it. I tilted my head back, shaking my head at her ridiculous claim.
Angel and me together in a romantic relationship?
That’s a fairytale.
It sounded like one of those impossible, dramatic novels I read late at night when I couldn’t sleep.
First, Angel would have to realize she is in love with me. Then we’d have to deal with the family’s interference because we are supposed to act like siblings and not lovers. And what would Angel’s past flings think?
All those girls who chased her, the ones who threw themselves at her feet in this district, would probably lose their minds if she suddenly settled down with the quiet, four-eyed girl living under her roof.
I had pictures of all of it in my head, but the fantasy never made it past the first step because Angel Morningstar would never admit that she was in love with me.
She would rather lock herself in a room, scream at the walls, or call me a witch a hundred times over before letting those words cross her lips.
"Just watch and see. I’ll be the one laughing at you next year when I see you with a baby bump, planning a future with Angel. I’m going to be the godmother to your future mini-devils. Hahaha!"
Abigail pointed a finger at me, laughing so hard her shoulders shook.
"Okay then. Let’s see who’s going to be the last one laughing."
I rolled my eyes, but I couldn’t hide the soft smile pulling at my lips.
"Now that is settled, are you staying or not? Because I need a normal friend in this forsaken district."
Abigail stood up, smoothing down her flower skirt and extending a hand toward me.
"Fine. I’m staying because I want to enjoy myself and do things I haven’t done before. Maybe I’ll even find someone hotter than Angel," I teased.
I grabbed her hand, letting her pull me off the mattress, my posture straightening as a spark of mischief hit my chest.
"Ohhh, that would be so hot and fiery. I mean, you saw the way she reacted when Carlos was flirting with you. That’s because he’s her friend. If he were someone else, she would have pulled out all his teeth," Abigail said.
She gasped dramatically, placing a hand over her heart with a wide, dangerous grin.
"I’m not scared of her. Matter of fact, I now know how to make her jealous. And to save her from removing someone’s teeth, I’ll pull my strings on someone she can’t hurt."
I smirked, adjusting the collar of my jersey. If Angel wanted to play games, call me names, and pretend she didn’t care, then two could play at that.
"That is nice, but just don’t make the fire hotter because when it explodes, it becomes worse than a wildfire."
Abigail gave me a playful, warning look, tapping her finger against my nose.
So we continued chatting, with time passing by until Abigail got a call from someone.
The sharp ring of her phone broke through our laughter. She pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and answered quickly, nodding along to whoever was speaking on the other end.
"Alright, it’s volleyball time. Do you know how to play volleyball?" Abigail asked.
My eyes lit up instantly behind my glasses.
"I love that game. I used to play it during my high school days. I was very good."
A rush of familiar energy swept through me. It had been ages since I played, but the muscle memory was still right there under my skin.
"That’s great because we Omegas are playing against the Alphas. Come on, let’s head to the beach."
Abigail grabbed my wrist, pulling me toward the door with a loud, triumphant laugh as we headed out into the bright afternoon sun.
