Chapter 28: Why Can’t You Just Drop That Question

I could not believe my plan to sleep on Angel’s shoulder had failed. I was supposed to be the one drifting off, the one looking vulnerable and sweet to steal her focus, but she had completely reversed the roles in less than a second.

That girl slept on my shoulder throughout the rest of the movie.

Her breathing immediately turned slow and deep, the gentle rise and fall of her chest pressing right against my side with an absolute, heavy relaxation. The movie wasn’t even that boring, and Angel was the one who had actually chosen it.

It was a fast-paced action film with loud explosions and screeching tires that rattled the entire theater, yet she just nestled closer into my neck, completely unbothered by the noise.

The moment she rested on my shoulder, my body froze, like something forbidden was touching me and I needed something to push it away. I didn’t dare move an inch, even stopped watching the movie.

All I did was stare at her sleeping face...

Her pheromones were affecting me, not in a bad way, but in a way I couldn’t explain. It settled deep into my chest, making my lingering heat hum with a strange, dizzying comfort that I completely detested myself for enjoying.

Even last night, when I kept sniffing her hair, I couldn’t stop. I kept sniffing her hair until the movie ended, and she stood up, stretching and yawning like she had just woken up from a very deep nap.

"So let’s go grab a bite. I’m famished," Angel said.

She grabbed my hand as per our agreement, and we both walked out of the movie theater.

We stopped at a restaurant that wasn’t as expensive or fancy as the one we had dinner at last time.

We ordered a burger combo.

"You have been quiet for a while..." Angel said.

She picked up her burger with both hands, her sharp eyes locking right onto my face over the top of the toasted bun.

So she noticed.

"It’s not a big deal... I’m always quiet."

"Really, huh...? You were not this quiet last night."

She took a slow, deliberate bite, her jaw chewing in a rhythmic, teasing pattern that made my stomach drop instantly.

"..."

What is this bitch talking about? Did she actually hear my moaning last night?

"What are you talking about?" I asked quickly.

"What do you think I am talking about?"

The corner of her mouth hitched upward into that smug, torturous smirk, her crimson eyes gleaming with absolute victory as she watched me squirm.

She is trying to play mind games with me. I bet she didn’t hear a sound. She just wants me to tell her on my own.

I squeezed my jaw tight, locking the panic down before it could completely break through my facial expression.

"Look, can we hurry?" I said, checking the time on the table.

"Where are you hurrying to?"

She dipped a fry into the dip, her posture entirely relaxed against the booth’s vinyl backing.

"I have a job to do."

"You are off today."

She stated it with a flat, final certainty, reminding me of the annoying phone call she had made to my library supervisor.

"Not that one. I’m supposed to be at an orphanage in like two hours."

"You work at an orphanage?"

Her chewing slowed down for a brief second, her eyebrows lifting in a rare moment of actual surprise.

"Yeah... Like I said, I need money. Very soon, Miss Landlady, I won’t be living under your mommy’s roof. I will finally have my own apartment."

I tilted my chin up, letting a proud, defiant ring enter my voice as I stared right back into her sharp eyes.

I don’t know why I bragged, but I wanted to rub it in her crazy face.

I wanted her to know that her insults and her labels wouldn’t keep me trapped in her shadow forever, that I had an escape route planned out.

Angel stopped chewing and didn’t say a word for a moment.

It was like she was thinking about my last sentence.

Then her face widened.

The tension vanished from her jawline in a fraction of a second, replaced by a harsh, mocking expression.

"Ha..." She let out a short laugh.

"You leaving the house will be the best thing ever. I will finally have the house to myself, and no four-eyes ghost girl will come knocking on my door because she is jealous of the girls I’m busy screwing."

She leaned forward over the table, her deep voice dropping into a husky, malicious drawl that sent a sharp sting through my pride.

"Excuse me? Why would you have the idea that I am jealous of your sex life?"

"Because you fantasize about me screwing you."

"....."

I have never fantasized about Angel between my legs.

Never have I ever.

Okay... maybe once or twice, but it was a dream. I swear, a dream... A very bad dream.

A complete trick played by my biology during my heat cycle, nothing more than a random chemical mistake.

She might be hot, but like I always say, Angel Morningstar is the last person I would ever invite into my bed.

"Look, never in my life would the thought of you kissing me and fucking me ever occur in my head."

I forced the words out with a sharp, defensive bite, glaring directly into her crimson eyes to make the words as solid as steel.

"So whose name were you moaning last night?"

"Why can’t you just drop that question?"

My voice sounded small and breathless now, the fast pace of her questions completely corners my defenses.

"Because I feel like I need to know... from you. And be honest."

The lazy drawl vanished, replaced by an absolute, heavy dominant tone that sent a sudden shiver straight down my spine.

"I will never tell you about my orgasm, girl... Just drop it."

"No, I won’t. Last night, you sniffed my hair over and over like some little puppy. Your pheromones were everywhere, and then the moment we got home, they started to settle down because of what you were doing with my hair. You love my pheromones. The movie theater was a proof.."

I blinked in disbelief.

So she knew I had been sniffing her hair.

I had to think of something else because if Angel found out that I was using her scent to suppress my heat, she would never let me live it down.

"I only sniffed your hair because of the shampoo you use... By the way, what shampoo do you use?"

I threw the question out with a frantic, uncoordinated shrug, trying to make my intense curiosity look like a casual topic.

"Liar."

"I am not lying. I was just curious about the scent... And the name and face I fantasized about last night was my beta friend, Benny."

Yes, I was curious about the shampoo, but maybe I should lie about the beta.

It was the only logical escape route left, a simple distraction to protect my pride from her suffocating dominant nature.

"....Don’t worry. Soon enough, that name will change to mine. You will be screaming, ’Angel...’"

"You know what? I have lost my appetite."

I stood up and walked out of the restaurant..
