Chapter 18: Unexpected Heat
So it turned out it was a dream. I knew something was wrong. It definitely felt off.
Because I wouldn’t easily give in to the girl I hate.
And my body doesn’t betray me. It never has.
I happened to be in the storeroom, reading my Spanish book, when my manager walked in on me.
I was fucking drooling and sweating as I lay on the books.
I was so embarrassed when I woke up. For a few minutes, I couldn’t think straight.
My manager was kind enough to spare me the explanation because I was on my break, and I wasn’t the type to easily fall asleep.
I can’t believe I fell asleep while reading a Spanish book.
After having dinner with Angel last night, we did the dishes together, just like the couple did in the book.
Then I went to bed, and nothing happened.
So why in the world would I be dreaming of Angel Morningstar between my thighs?
I have never once dreamed about that girl. I don’t dream about people I dislike.
My sleeping mind was supposed to be a safe zone, a private place where the annoying face of my stepsister couldn’t reach me or mess with my sanity.
Never would I crave that spoiled brat’s fingers inside me. Never.
"Oh my goodness, look at the way you’re sweating, April."
Katie didn’t even wait for me to sit down on my stool, her eyes widening behind the counter as she pointed a manicured finger straight at my hairline.
I touched my forehead and confirmed it. I really was sweating.
No cap.
It was entirely real, a heavy layer of moisture coating my neck that made my library cardigan feel like a suffocating winter coat against my skin.
The storeroom had air conditioning, so why was I sweating?
Was it because of the dream?
I just brushed it off. I couldn’t tell Katie about my forbidden dream. Because I knew she would broadcast it to somebody.
And that so-called somebody would toy with my omega life for the rest of my days.
When I told Katie I had fallen asleep while reading, she laughed and suggested I use a language-learning app instead.
It was faster and easier.
She pulled out her own phone to demonstrate, the screen flashing with colorful cartoon graphics and quick matching games that looked a lot less intimidating than the heavy text book.
I don’t know why I was so eager to learn Spanish.
Yes, I worked in a library. Reading was supposed to be my hobby.
Spoiler alert. It isn’t.
My actual motivation had absolutely nothing to do with expanding my literary horizons or improving my professional skills for the front desk job.
I’m only working to get paid..
The last time I was so invested in reading was when I was trying to impress my crush.
I remembered staying up late into the night just to memorize the plot lines of a fantasy series, desperately trying to find a common ground with a person who didn’t even notice me.
And now I was doing the same because I wanted to understand my enemy and know when they were badmouthing me.
I needed a shield, a way to break through her cheap power moves so she couldn’t use that native language to turn me into a dummy right in front of her friends.
So I downloaded an app to improve my learning.
When I thought the next day my sweating was going to stop...
It didn’t.
I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling as my vision blurred.
I wasn’t wearing my glasses, but the blurriness was worse than usual.
Even without my lenses, I could usually make out the outline of the doorframe, but right now everything was swimming in a heavy, fog that made my stomach churn.
My breathing was ragged. My body temperature kept rising. It felt like I was being boiled from the inside.
I tried to steady my breathing as I gathered what little strength I had left to grab my pill bottle.
I usually take suppressants for my heat, which comes every month, and I’d already taken them this month.
But if this was what I thought it was...
Why was it back?
The timing was completely wrong, a heavy surge of wild pheromones hitting my system when I should have been completely safe for another three weeks.
This was an unexpected heat.
The heavy scent of my own Omega nature was already starting to fill the space of the bedroom, a clear sign that my body was entering a dangerous phase.
After taking my medicine, I felt a little better, but my fever didn’t go down.
I could still feel it.
The deep, aching pressure in my lower stomach remained completely unchanged, a heavy pulse of desire throbbing against my ribs with every single heartbeat.
My body was rejecting the medication.
The suppressants were doing absolutely nothing to stop the rush of the cycle, the chemicals failing completely against the raw intensity of the heat taking over my system.
I stood in the bathroom, but the heat still wouldn’t leave me.
Why am I still like this?
A small sob escaped my throat, my knees trembling so violently that I had to lean my entire weight against the counter to keep from collapsing onto the tiles.
I stood under the cold shower, trying to cool my body down, but it still didn’t work.
I even tried masturbating, trying to help myself.
My fingers moved frantically against my own skin in the dark stall, a desperate, clumsy attempt to find some kind of release from the pressure building up inside me.
But no matter how my fingers worked inside me...
It didn’t do the job. My heat wasn’t suppressed.
The brief sparks of pleasure did absolutely nothing to cool the wild furnace in my stomach, leaving me feeling even more empty and desperate than before.
My heat wouldn’t subside.
The heavy, scent of an un-mated Omega was rolling off my skin in thick waves now, filling the entire bathroom until the air felt heavy and thick.
This was unexpected. I had never experienced anything like this before.
My body had always followed the rules of the medication perfectly, keeping the primal side of my nature hidden away where it couldn’t cause any trouble.
It only happened once a month, and I always took my pills on time to avoid a situation like this.
No matter what I tried, it was useless.
The cold water continued to run down my face, but my skin still felt like it was on fire, the internal fever pushing me closer and closer to the edge of sanity.
I wasn’t getting any relief.
The constant, dull ache between my thighs was growing heavier with every second, my mind fracturing as the primal need for an Alpha started to take over my thoughts.
This has to stop before I lose myself.
I need help.
I have to call someone to rescue me.
