Chapter 10: The Game Is On!!
This morning, when I woke up, the first thing I did was take my medicine.
My fingers fumbled with the plastic cap of the prescription bottle, the white pills rattling softly in the quiet bedroom. I slid one onto my tongue and swallowed it down with a quick gulp of lukewarm water from my nightstand, feeling the familiar, chalky weight slide down my throat.
It’s a daily medication that helps with an Omega heat cycle, which I happen to have.
The small blue tablet was a mandatory shield, a chemical barrier that kept my hormones perfectly locked away so I could function like a normal human being in a world dominated by aggressive Alphas.
I have never once missed my pills and hardly ever experience it.
My body was completely stable, a regular, predictable routine that kept the terrifying vulnerability of a sudden heat from ever breaking through my daily life.
Then I grabbed my yoga mat and headed to my room balcony.
The purple foam unrolled with a soft slap against the cool concrete tiles, the fresh morning air hitting my face and helping to shake off the remaining cobwebs of my sleep.
I was doing my daily stretching when I felt eyes on me.
A sudden, prickling sensation tracked down my spine, a heavy weight in the air that made my muscles tighten up right in the middle of a deep hamstring reach.
My neighbor next door happened to be on her balcony.
Angel was out smoking.
A thin, gray trail of ash drifted over the railing, curling lazily into the breeze before dissolving into the blue sky above the courtyard.
She sat on her lounge chair, legs crossed, wearing a robe. She had been staring at me, and her face wore a smug grin.
This was the first time I actually got a proper glimpse of that girl.
She had a baby dimple, which made her look different from the way I actually viewed her.
The tiny indentation appeared on her left cheek as her grin widened, a surprisingly soft detail that didn’t fit the brutal, dominant persona she carried around every day.
I know Angel is a gorgeous-looking woman.
Her sharp jawline, the smooth bronze tone of her skin, and the powerful, athletic frame beneath the robe were completely undeniable in the bright daylight.
Every part of her body screams beauty, which I will never ever admit in her presence.
I gritted my teeth, forcing my eyes back down to the foam mat, refusing to give her the satisfaction of catching me admire her appearance.
She stood up and walked over to the end of her balcony, close to my room. She rested her head on one hand as she kept that smile on her face.
Her fingers tapped against the metal railing, her heavy Alpha pheromones drifting across the short gap between our spaces, thick and confusing to my senses.
"Nice stretching... do you know there are many ways to stretch and help you crack those joints of yours?" her husky voice said, then she winked. "Just one round and you’ll never want to do this kind of yoga ever again. Only sex yoga will be on your mind."
The deep, vibrating words traveled easily through the quiet air, her left eyelid dropping in a lazy, mocking gesture that made my throat go completely dry.
And now she had ruined my morning.
The peaceful stillness of my daily exercise vanished in a single second, replaced by a frantic, boiling irritation that rushed straight up to my cheeks.
With that beauty and perfectly shaped body she had, God forgot to add little sense.
She was completely empty upstairs, a gorgeous shell driven entirely by arrogance and a ridiculous obsession with getting a piece of revenge.
"You are definitely a weird creature," I said, already packing my mat to go inside.
"Yes, I am. I am proud to be weird. That book of yours is stupid to read. It has nothing to do with someone like you trying to crave someone like me," she said, then took another drag from her cigarette.
"Did you even read the front cover to check what was inside?"
I paused, clutching the rolled mat against my ribs as I shot a sharp, defensive glare toward her side of the railing.
"No, I did not. It’s too red for my liking, and I hate red."
She flicked a stray bit of ash over the edge, her lazy smile never leaving her lips as she leaned her chest forward against the metal barrier.
"Your hair is red," I said.
I gestured with my chin toward the messy, bright strands tumbling around her shoulders, standard proof that her logic made absolutely no sense.
"No, it’s wine-colored... there is a difference. So I’m not going to go by the book. I’m going to do it my way. Tell me, Four Eyes, what is your type?"
She blew a steady ring of gray smoke into the air, her dark red pupils locking onto my eyes with a sudden, sharp focus that trapped me in place.
"I don’t have a type," I said flatly.
I forced my voice to stay deadpan, turning my body toward the glass bedroom door to show her that the conversation was entirely finished.
"Are you sure? Because your colleague mentioned you are into Beta girls, mostly the bookish type."
I froze, then looked at her.
My jaw dropped slightly, my hand tightening around the foam cylinder as I turned back to face her completely, my heart skipping a frantic beat.
When did she talk to Katie?
"If you’re wondering how she told me, she called me last night and we happened to become.. friends. I am not a Beta, nor am I the bookish type, but I swear I’m going to become the type you desire."
Angel leaned her shoulder against the stucco wall, her smirk growing wider and more confident as she watched the panic play out across my face.
I moved closer to the edge of my balcony.
The distance between us shrank to just a few feet as I marched up to the partition, my anger completely overriding my desire to run away inside.
"You are just doing all this so you can fuck me."
"Yes, I am, and I always get what I want, even if it’s the last thing I do."
She didn’t deny it for a single second, her posture perfectly steady, her voice dropping into that deep, flat certainty that always terrified me.
So Angel really meant business.
This wasn’t a passing joke or a temporary tantrum to get over the knee to her groin; she was actually planning out a full campaign against me.
She was never going to stop with this harassment, was she?
The realization settled heavily into my gut, a tight, nervous knot tightening up as I stared at her stubborn, beautiful annoying face.
"You should be careful, Angel, because you might end up falling in love with me," I spat out.
I threw the words out like a dare, hoping to shock her out of that massive bubble of security she carried around like a shield.
She giggled.
The sound was high and sharp, a genuine burst of mockery that echoed off the concrete walls of the house, showing exactly how ridiculous she found my threat.
"Me, fall in love with you? Never. All I want is to get my revenge. There’s no love attached... in fact, there is no such thing as love in my book. It’s a facade," she said.
She crushed the remains of her cigarette into a small ceramic tray on the lounge chair, her expression flattening out into a cold, hard line.
"Really, huh? You’re not the type to fall in love. In four years of living together, you’ve never given me this much attention. Keep up your act, and you’ll see that you’ll fall in love with me," I told her straight to her face.
I took a deep breath, stepping as close to the dividing rail as possible, forcing my voice to sound completely confident and steady despite the racing of my pulse.
From her balcony, she leaned toward mine, almost touching my face with hers.
The space between our noses vanished in a fraction of a second, the warm scent of wine and smoke washing directly over my lips as she mirrored my movement.
"I’m not going to fall in love with you, but you’ll be the one to. If you falling in love with me is the only way to get you into my bed, then I’m definitely going to give you all my attention."
The whisper was low and dangerous, her crimson eyes tracking the rapid rise and fall of my chest behind the thin fabric of my top.
And then it was.
She pulled back with a slow, smug chuckle, turning her back to me and sliding the glass door of her own room open with a soft click.
I didn’t know where this was heading, but I was definitely going to turn the tables.
If Angel Morningstar doesn’t stop with her crazy obsession, I’m going to make her fall in love with me.
I gripped the edge of my balcony rail, watching her shadow disappear behind her dark curtains, ready to play whatever twisted game she wanted until she was the one begging for mercy.
It’s game on!!..
