Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Transfer Student

Around eight in the morning, students arrived at Chiba Rissei High School as usual.

There was still nearly half an hour before morning reading began, but every student in Second Year, Class 1 was already sitting in the classroom.

However, even though it was an advanced class, not every student buried their head in their books as soon as they sat down. In fact, quite a few of them were chatting and laughing.

"Did you see the news last night? There was a boy who looks about the same age as us, but he’s actually a Devil Hunter who can kill powerful Devils."

"I saw it too. I think he’s already being called the strongest private Devil Hunter in Chiba Prefecture. I can’t believe he’s the same age as us!"

"I saw his photo. He looked so handsome. It would be amazing if he could be my boyfriend. Oh my gosh, I’m blushing."

"Keep dreaming. He’s in a completely different world from us. Unless you become a Devil Hunter too, then maybe you might have the tiniest chance."

Listening to her classmates chatting and laughing nearby, Kobeni Higashiyama sat at her desk without saying a word, reading her book.

However, she could not quite calm herself down, because she knew the person her classmates were talking about was Asaba.

Of course she knew Asaba was powerful, but only now did she realize that he was far more impressive than she had imagined.

The jokes between her classmates had unintentionally struck Kobeni Higashiyama right in the heart.

She had a considerable fondness for Asaba, but the more she listened to her classmates discuss him, the more inferior she felt. She thought it would be best to give up on those unrealistic fantasies.

After quite a while, Kobeni Higashiyama finally managed to calm herself down.

By now, morning reading was about to begin. The students around her had already quieted down, preparing to start.

Then, all of a sudden, the homeroom teacher walked in through the front door.

The students were a little surprised. Usually, teachers did not come during morning reading, much less the homeroom teacher.

"Today, a transfer student will be joining our class."

The homeroom teacher briefly explained the situation, then said to Kotone Asaba outside the door, "Asaba, please come in."

Kotone Asaba walked into the classroom, wrote his name on the blackboard, then began introducing himself. "My name is Kotone Asaba. My hobby is cute little animals. I hope we’ll all get along."

Kotone Asaba casually scanned the classroom and found that there were roughly thirty-something students. There were not many students in one class, and there were only seven classes in the entire year. The whole second-year group only had a little over two hundred students, which was probably due to Japan’s declining birthrate.

There were seven second-year classes in total. Class 1 was the advanced class, Classes 2 and 3 were college-prep classes, and Classes 4 through 7 were ordinary classes.

However, the class placement was not determined entirely by grades. Grades came first, but students’ preferences were also considered. If students with excellent grades wanted a more relaxed environment, they could also choose to go to an ordinary class.

At that moment, quite a few students froze.

Aside from the few students who had not watched the news and had not discussed it with the others earlier, most of the students knew the name Kotone Asaba.

They had just been marveling at how incredible Kotone Asaba was, only for him to suddenly become their classmate.

Forget the students, even the homeroom teacher had been extremely shocked when the principal told them the news yesterday.

Seeing the students staring in stunned silence one after another, the homeroom teacher could not help smiling.

"As, Asaba?!"

Kobeni Higashiyama failed to control her emotions and accidentally cried out.

Only after the words left her mouth did she realize what she had done, and she hurriedly covered her mouth. But it was already far too late.

Immediately, many of the students’ gazes gathered on Kobeni Higashiyama at the same time. Kobeni Higashiyama lowered her head in embarrassment.

"There happens to be an empty seat over there. Asaba, you can sit there."

The homeroom teacher pointed at the empty seat. It was the second-to-last seat by the window in the back row.

"All right."

Kotone Asaba felt like the buffs on this position were already fully stacked. He was both a transfer student and sitting in the classic seat. If this were an anime from his previous life, he would absolutely be the protagonist.

More importantly, Kobeni Higashiyama was sitting at the desk to his right, which would make it easier for him to interact with her.

Of course, by "the desk to his right," that did not mean they were seatmates. Everyone in the class had their own desk. Kobeni Higashiyama was sitting at the desk immediately to his right.

Kotone Asaba walked over to his seat and sat down, taking the books he would need later out of his schoolbag in advance.

He had not brought Pochita with him today. After all, Pochita was still a Devil. If he brought Pochita to school, it would definitely have a considerable impact on the other students. He did not want to cause trouble for anyone.

He had left Pochita at home to watch television and bought plenty of tasty food for him. He had also reminded Pochita not to run around everywhere, so there should be no problem.

Kotone Asaba placed his book on the desk and prepared to start morning reading. He knew that Kobeni Higashiyama’s situation was very awkward right now, so he did not speak to her.

"I hope everyone will get along well with your new classmate. Now, let’s begin morning reading as usual."

After saying that, the homeroom teacher left.

Although the students were filled with interest and curiosity toward Kotone Asaba, they were all very disciplined. It was already time to begin morning reading.

Kotone Asaba blended in naturally and joined them in reading. After all, just a few days before transmigrating, he had still been an ordinary high school student.

The first class this morning was English, so the content for morning reading was English as well. Morning reading existed to help students enter a learning state ahead of time.

The short morning reading session ended after just over ten minutes, and it was time for the first class to begin. The English teacher had already entered the classroom.

"A new student joined us today. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask anytime, or you can come ask me after class."

As soon as the English teacher entered the classroom, they spoke to Kotone Asaba.

"I understand, teacher."

Kotone Asaba nodded.

After this class, many students noticed that the English teacher’s pace was noticeably slower than usual today. However, they all understood. After all, the transfer student who had arrived today had a very special identity.

The bell rang.

As soon as the bell signaling the end of class sounded, the English teacher closed their book, picked up their teaching materials, and left. "All right, that’s all for this class."

Kotone Asaba found the class quite easy. He had memorized everything the teacher had covered.

At that moment, just as the English teacher walked out of the classroom, several students immediately came over and surrounded Kotone Asaba.

"Asaba, are you really the Devil Hunter from TV? That’s amazing!"

"I never imagined that the person being called the strongest private Devil Hunter in Chiba Prefecture would actually be a high school student just like us!"

"Can you give me your autograph? Just sign it in my notebook."

"I want one too, I want one too!"

Facing such enthusiastic classmates, Kotone Asaba showed a slightly awkward smile.
