Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Happy Farm 2
However, Moira Lynch knew this was just an appetizer. The main course was next.
She took the Task Card. As usual, it praised Moira Lynch for being an outstanding employee, then issued the next task: sorting ducklings.
’Based on this, the final day will probably involve sorting large geese.’ After leaving the work area, Moira Lynch saw many other players like herself emerging with exhausted looks, following a robot’s guidance in a certain direction.
Just then, a robot approached and spouted a stream of interstellar language.
Moira Lynch could only make out the general meaning: "Work is over. It’s now dinnertime."
"I don’t eat dinner. I can keep working. I can help you collect the trash."
Moira Lynch said this in her broken interstellar language, gesticulating wildly for fear the robot wouldn’t understand her.
’This farm is huge. Rather than waste time searching on my own or making a mistake by wandering into a restricted area, it’s better to just ask these robots for help.’
The robot looked Moira Lynch up and down. A question mark slowly materialized on the screen on its head. It seemed this was the first time it had encountered an employee who actively requested overtime after their shift ended.
But seeing how thin and small Moira Lynch was, and how she couldn’t even speak clearly, the robot automatically concocted a tragic backstory for her.
"Come with me."
The robot led Moira Lynch in the opposite direction of the crowd.
After about a ten-minute walk, in a remote corner, Moira Lynch saw a familiar-looking building.
"The farm’s trash processor has been broken for the past two days, and the repair crew is still on their way. If you can clear out all this trash, I will apply to the farm owner for an extra reward for you."
’How pitiful,’ the robot thought. ’So young and can’t even speak properly, yet she’s out here working to support her family.’
Moira Lynch, on the other hand, hadn’t actually understood what the robot said. She only vaguely caught that something was broken, something about being on the way, and the word "reward."
’Oh well, who cares if I didn’t understand,’ she thought. ’Right now, I just want to hurry up and fleece this sheep... no, I mean, collect this trash.’
Upon walking inside, Moira Lynch was immediately stunned by the scene before her.
Before Moira Lynch stood a mountain made of various types of poultry feathers.
The feathers were enormous. Moira Lynch could only imagine how large these birds must have been when they were alive.
A pang of disappointment hit Moira Lynch. ’Do these Starfarers really love chicken, duck, and goose this much? They didn’t waste a single scrap, leaving behind only a pile of feathers.’
’Fine, feathers it is. I can take them back and make feather dusters.’
Comforting herself with this thought, Moira Lynch walked toward the mountain of feathers.
But when she got closer and brushed some aside, Moira Lynch realized she had been mistaken. The Starfarers were as picky as ever.
She casually grabbed a feather and discovered that skin and flesh were still attached beneath it.
Moira Lynch’s eyes lit up at this discovery. She quickly took a few steps back, pulling on the chicken feather in her hand.
Soon, an entire chicken appeared before Moira Lynch.
To be precise, it wasn’t an *entire* chicken. The breast meat and both thigh portions had been completely removed.
But aside from that, the other parts were perfectly intact.
Moira Lynch was stunned by such a technique.
After stowing the mountain of chicken, duck, and goose carcasses into her space, she continued deeper inside. Soon, a mountain of vegetables appeared before her.
Besides being a ranch, this place was also a kind of farmstead restaurant, so it was normal for there to be vegetables.
’But why would vegetables be thrown away as trash?’
At first, Moira Lynch thought the vegetables must have gone bad, but when she got closer, she saw that wasn’t the case at all. They were perfectly fine.
Moira Lynch picked up a tomato-like vegetable. It was bigger than her face, bright red, and emitted a sweet aroma.
She took a bite. It was bursting with juice and incredibly sweet. In a word: delicious!
’I don’t understand why such good vegetables would be thrown away.’
She immediately began loading the vegetables into her space.
After continuous, high-intensity use of her spiritual power, Moira Lynch’s spiritual power quickly became depleted—a sign of overuse.
She took a bottle of D-grade Spirit Relief Liquid from her space. After drinking it, she felt much better.
’Constantly depleting and then restoring my spiritual power is also a form of training.’
’It’s like an elastic balloon. Only by stretching its limits can it be inflated even larger next time, holding more air.’
However, after exhausting her spiritual power this time, it would take a while to recover. For now, Moira Lynch would have to rely on her own physical strength.
Without the help of her spiritual power, her efficiency dropped significantly. Besides, she didn’t find any chicken legs or anything of the sort.
’Seems I was being too optimistic.’
Still, she managed to collect plenty of chicken, duck, and goose feathers.
In addition, Moira Lynch also found a large number of hatched eggshells.
’This is good stuff, too. Not only can they be used as fertilizer, but eggshells also seem to be a type of medicinal ingredient.’
’Take it, take it, take it all.’
From then on, aside from separating the fresh from the not-so-fresh, Moira Lynch took everything she could get her hands on.
By the time she had cleared out the entire trash processing plant and went outside, she found there were still several hours until the next day.
Her spiritual power had mostly recovered by now, and she felt she could keep going.
The robot waiting outside went in to inspect her work, then emerged in a state of shock.
"You are the most capable trash collector I have ever seen! You’ve been a huge help to the farm. I will report this to the farm owner and have him pay you a generous reward."
The robot chattered on, and Moira Lynch was still in a state of half-understanding, but from its pleasant and friendly demeanor, it wasn’t hard to guess that it was very satisfied with her work.
Seizing the opportunity, Moira Lynch expressed her willingness to continue working.
At this, the robot gave her a strange look. ’She works so desperately. Her family must be in dire straits.’
If Moira Lynch knew what the robot was thinking, she would have nodded in vehement agreement. Weren’t things dire? Her home was like a furnace, and the grain had all died from the heat. If this game hadn’t suddenly appeared, Caelus would have already descended into utter chaos.
The most despairing part was not knowing how long these days would last. Even if the intense heat ended, would there be other disasters waiting for them?
Although Moira Lynch’s wish had always been to simply live a good life, if Caelus fell into chaos, she, as a part of it, would inevitably be affected—unless she was willing to hide in her space forever and never come out.
But humans are social creatures; staying inside for a lifetime was clearly impossible. Besides, her intuition told her that she couldn’t stay in the space indefinitely.
’But being a savior is out of the question,’ she thought. ’I don’t want to be in the spotlight. Still, I can sell some of the food and water from my space to keep the common people from starving to death.’
’After all, when people are driven to despair and have nothing left to lose, they are capable of anything.’
