Chapter 36: Interrogation

Godric stared at the image and the caption for one long, silent moment before doing the only reasonable thing he could think of.

He locked the screen and stashed the phone back in his pocket.

He was far too tired to try and find out whatever game the heiress to the great House Stormbourne was playing.

Stepping out through the grand arched exit of the training building, Godric immediately felt the shift in atmosphere.

The heavy courtyard was bustling with students and instructors, but as Godric walked past, he felt the heavy weight of gazes trailing his every move. Whispers rippled across the polished stone steps like wind over dry grass.

He kept his gaze ahead, tuning out the whispers which quickly spread around him.

Ever since he awakened, he felt a lot of eyes on him, but it was not comparable to the amount of attention he was getting ever since he and Raven returned from the dungeon gate they got sucked into.

He was just about to exit the academy’s towering gates when a voice called out to him.

"Mr Godric Blackstar."

Godric paused, then turned to see a man wearing a black suit standing behind him.

He was around the same height as him, only a couple of years older and standing with the practised posture of someone with authority.

"Who’s asking?"

The man reached for his pocket and pulled out a small identification card. "My name is William Borough. I’m from the Summoners Association. I am here to talk about your recent incident regarding the Black Gate."

Godric raised a brow. "Black Gate?"

"Our team is still confirming the details, but it appears so." The man gestured toward the black car standing just outside the academy gates. "If you don’t mind, let’s talk somewhere more private."

Godric wanted to dismiss the man at first, but after a moment of thought, he decided that finding out more details about the gate he got pulled into wouldn’t hurt.

"Lead the way."

The car took off the moment the two men stepped inside.

"As you know, the dungeon gate you were pulled into wasn’t like any other gate. We do have a pretty good idea of what happened from other survivors, but we have a problem indicating how exactly the dungeon gate closed." William paused for a moment, looking through the tinted window at the back of the car. "We tried to contact Raven Stormbourne, but her family has been... reluctant to give statements."

Godric nodded faintly.

There was no way House Stormbourne would bother giving statements to government officials who basically worked for them. Especially not when one of their kin, Daren Stormbourne, was behind keeping everyone inside hostage.

"So you decided to go for someone without a family to stand in the way," Godric said flatly.

William coughed, caught slightly off guard, then quickly gathered his composure. "The Blackstar family has always been known to be honourable. We figured—"

"Using my family’s honour to try and get information out of me... not bad," Godric said with a faint nod, mocking the man’s line of thought.

Of course, Godric had no intention of telling the Summoners Association anything useful. Words given to bureaucrats had a habit of coming back to bite you.

"I’m afraid there isn’t really anything useful I can tell you," Godric said, looking as apologetic as he could manage. "I was trying to dig myself out of the sand when the dungeon gate suddenly closed."

William sat in silence for a long moment, studying Godric’s face.

Then he let out a soft exhale.

"Is that so? Well, then there is no point in taking any more of your time. Is there anywhere we can drop you off?"

Godric looked out the window, realising they were already far from the academy and deep inside the inner city.

"Black Market," he suddenly replied, catching William a little off guard.

William leaned forward and pressed a single button in front of them. Pressing on it, he said: "Black Market."

The driver changed lanes immediately, steering them toward the market while Godric sat in heavy silence beside William for the next twenty minutes.

When the car finally rolled to a stop, Godric didn’t wait for permission. He pulled the handle and swung his door open.

"Oh, one more thing," William called out just as Godric set a foot onto the pavement outside. "If you don’t mind me asking... how many core fragments did you receive?"

Godric hesitated for a split second.

Normally, everyone inside the dungeon received a similar amount of core fragments, and with the government tracking every normal person’s finances, there wasn’t really much he could do to hide the sudden influx of wealth. Still, not wanting to appear even remotely higher than most, he decided to give the man the exact figure he needed to sell.

"35," Godric replied.

William’s eyes flickered, but he quickly offered a well-practised smile. "Thank you. If you remember anything else, don’t forget to call us." He handed Godric a business card, and the car pulled away into the traffic.

Inside the vehicle, the second the passenger door clicked shut, William’s smile vanished completely.

He pulled a small notebook from the pocket in his inner jacket and flipped through the pages.

He stopped at the page that said ’Black Gate Incident - Elyune Academy’ and looked through the list of names.

"14... 11... 9... 12... 13... 7..." As he read through the number of core fragments everyone he questioned so far received, he frowned slightly.

Those who had been stuck inside the dungeon for years barely scraped double digits, while the young leader of House Blackstar had thrice as much in a matter of a few days.

Pulling out a pen from the same pocket, he clicked it once and wrote the name "Godric Blackstar" on the bottom of the page. Beside the name he wrote the number ’35’ and stared at it for a long moment, his eyes narrowing.

Slowly, William drew three heavy circles around Godric’s name. Beneath it, he scribbled a quick note to himself: Keep an eye on him.
