Chapter 10: Unexpected Visit

The baldheaded man blinked. "You..." Disbelief clung to his voice, as though he couldn’t accept the idea that the young man he was bullying for his father’s debt might’ve awakened.

Suddenly, he turned toward his two companions. "What are you fools standing there for?!" he screamed, his voice slurred as the bones in his jaw rattled as he spoke. "Get him!"

The two lackeys dashed forward, their fists clenched and ready to offer a beating.

Godric dodged the first strike with ease, ducking under a wild swing before giving a liver punch in response, feeling more than one rib crack under the strike.

The second attacker managed to land a hit, which to now Godric’s awakened body was nothing more than a gentle tap.

Godric turned with the man’s fist still on his face and slapped the man with the back of his hand, sending him crashing into a nearby wall.

In a matter of a few seconds, three debt collectors who had been pestering him for years were laid on the ground, blood pooling from their mouths as Godric dealt with them with the ease of swatting a fly.

"That’s... that’s impossible..." one of the lackeys muttered, scrambling back across the concrete.

"If I see you here again, I’ll let you meet my summon," Godric said, his gaze shifting across the three men.

The bald man’s jaw clenched. "Just wait..." he hissed, scrambling to his feet and peddling back. "Just wait till the boss hears of this!" he added before running away, leaving his two lackeys behind for a moment before they too got up and ran away.

’Boss?’ Godric’s brow rose at the word. Throughout all the years he had been dealing with the three men, he had never heard them mention anything about having a boss.

Godric lingered on the thought for a moment before shaking it away.

It didn’t matter.

Whether it was the three loan sharks or their boss, he would deal with them all the same.

He was just about to turn and continue on his walk home before a sudden shout cut through the air.

"Hey, you kid!" a voice called from behind.

Godric turned to see a policeman rush toward him, his hand resting on his holstered weapon.

"Wait... You’re that kid from before... the one that told me those three were selling drugs!" the policeman’s brow furrowed as he recognised him. "You damn rascal, do you know how much time I wasted interrogating them?!"

"I never said they were selling drugs," Godric replied flatly. "I only said they were trying to sell me something."

"You think you’re clever, huh?!" the policeman stepped toward him. "Let me see some identification. I’m gonna write you up for giving false information."

Godric let out an exhausted exhale before pulling the identification card from his pocket.

"Here."

The policeman snapped the card from his hand and examined it thoughtfully.

"Godric Blackstar..."

Suddenly the policeman’s eyes snapped open.

"Tier 1 citizen... status awakened?"

He blinked, his gaze shifting between Godric and his ID card. His mouth opened a couple of times, but no words came out, as though he couldn’t quite put even a single thought together.

"Will that be all?" Godric asked, knowing well what was going through the policeman’s mind.

While policemen were a part of the government, a force used to maintain public safety, in truth they were only there to watch over Tier 3 citizens in the city’s outskirts. They had no authority to question Tier 2 citizens or those who were awakened.

The policeman’s eyes lingered on the ID for a few moments longer, as if he couldn’t quite decide whether the status or the citizen tier was the most surprising thing.

"I... I am very sorry, sir," the policeman bowed slightly, handing the ID card with both hands.

Godric accepted it and stashed it in his pocket before turning and heading back home, leaving the policeman completely puzzled.

"I’m home," Godric said the moment he entered his small house, though he was quick to realise Mina’s shoes weren’t there.

’I guess she’s still at the library.’

His sister studied hard, perhaps even too hard, though he couldn’t be one to judge. They were both similarly driven, though maybe their focuses were on different things this was most certainly the result of their family’s downfall.

After washing his hands in a sink that looked almost too small to be used efficiently, Godric headed straight for the kitchen, heating and eating food left in the fridge by his sister.

She was a good cook, great even. Godric often joked that if she failed her university exams she could just become a chef, which Mina did not appreciate one bit. As great as she was at cooking, she did it only out of necessity, rather than something she enjoyed.

With his stomach full, Godric decided to go to bed early. He wanted to go to the academy early tomorrow and spend some time in the training hall before the other students arrive. But even he did not anticipate that his plan would be disturbed from the second he opened his eyes.

"Brother! Brother, wake up!"

"Huh? What is it?"

Godric’s eyes flickered open to see Mina standing beside him, shaking him by his shoulder.

"There is someone here to see you."

Godric frowned.

That was unusual to say the least. He mostly kept to himself, with his mind purely focused on rebuilding his family’s name, he had no time for things like friendships, so getting an unexpected visit was never a good surprise.

’Loan sharks?’

It made sense.

After all, he did beat them just yesterday, and they did threaten to tell their ’boss’, whoever that person might’ve been.

Godric rose from the bed and quickly got dressed. At first he wanted to summon his weapon right away, but then decided not to. Not because he hoped there wouldn’t be a fight but because he didn’t want to startle his sister.

As much as they both hated this small, cramped house, it was still their home. If there was going to be a fight, he would take it outside.

"Wait here, I’ll go check it out," he said to his sister, who only pretended to leave and peeked over the corner of the wall as he opened the door.

"Mr Blackstar?" a man dressed in a neatly pressed suit asked.

"Who’s asking?"

"Lady Stormbourne is waiting outside."

Godric raised a brow.

Why was the Heir of House Stormbourne waiting outside his house in the city’s outskirts?

At first, Godric wanted to reject them right away, but he had a feeling that a lady from a great house who travelled all the way to the city’s outskirts wouldn’t take a simple ’no’ for an answer.

"Tell her I’ll be there in five," he said, closing the door before the man could reply.

Before Godric could even begin to gather his thoughts together, Mina came out from hiding. "Oh?" she smiled in amusement. "I didn’t know you were seeing any ladies, brother."

"I’m not."

"That’s exactly what someone hiding a girlfriend would say."

Godric frowned. "Don’t you have exams to study for?"

Before Mina could retort, Godric went back to his room to change into his uniform. Whatever business Raven had with him, he doubted he’d have time to come and get it afterwards.

Moments later, he was already dressed.

When he stepped outside, he saw a convoy of three blacked-out cars parked outside his house. They had tinted windows that allowed no sight inside, and from the looks of it, they were armoured to withstand more than just a simple road collision.

As he approached, the man standing beside the car in the middle opened a rear passenger door and nodded for him to get in.

Godric hesitated for a moment.

The situation probably couldn’t look any more sketchy, but recognising the convoy of cars as the ones he saw Raven arrive with back in the academy, he got in.
