Chapter 3: Chapter 3: F2 Appears

Jian Yu naturally thought of the same things Xu Jianjuan did.

According to the plot, Professor Lin’s class played a huge role in Sheng Yue developing an interest in Xu Jianjuan.

But right now, the female lead’s attitude was a little strange. Jian Yu no longer dared to just watch the drama unfold; she just wanted to get far away from her.

She had planned to dawdle while getting ready, waiting for Xu Jianjuan to leave.

’Heh, I didn’t expect this female lead to be so patient.’

Afraid of being late, Jian Yu had no choice but to concede defeat.

When Xu Jianjuan saw her come out, she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, her entire demeanor an attempt to show goodwill. "Jian Yu, I..."

"I don’t drink white tea. I like milk green tea with boba," Jian Yu said out of the blue, adjusting her glasses.

Their eyes met. Xu Jianjuan looked utterly confused.

’So annoying. The female lead can’t see that I’m rejecting her friendship, nor can she understand plain language.’

Jian Yu clutched her books and bolted.

Her skinny arms and legs flailed about ungracefully as she ran, like she’d seen a ghost.

Xu Jianjuan: "..."

She ran into the classroom, panting for breath. It was only seven-thirty, but the room was already half full.

Professor Lin was Professor Lin, after all.

Oh, wait.

It should be said, F2 is as intimidating as they say.

Jian Yu remembered that Professor Lin loved calling on students to answer questions, especially those sitting in out-of-the-way seats.

To avoid being called on, she deliberately found a seat in the back row, closer to the middle.

It couldn’t be helped; the front rows were all taken.

As her ragged breathing slowly returned to normal, Jian Yu clutched at her aching heart.

’I can’t run that fast next time.’

’I can’t stay up late, either.’

’I need to take care of myself.’

’Born premature, a heart condition, abandoned at an orphanage... It’s basically my real-life story.’

’If only I could Awaken a Beast Soul. Modern medicine still can’t fix a heart condition, but a Beast Soul can.’

’Beast Souls are too rare, mostly found only among the aristocracy. Not something a background character like me should have.’

Jian Yu let out a soft sigh and opened her book, though her mind wasn’t on the pages.

’I’m sure of it, absolutely positive: the female lead has her sights on me.’

’Maybe she wants to be my friend? But more likely, she wants to drag me in to be a target, to help draw some of the fire.’

"Jian Yu, can I sit here?" Xu Jianjuan appeared, as tenacious as a ghost.

Jian Yu raised her eyes and looked expressionlessly at the little cutie in front of her. "Go ahead."

Xu Jianjuan sat down happily.

But Jian Yu immediately stood up, grabbed her book, and moved to a seat in the corner by the window.

Besides the two rows in the middle, the seats by the window were all single desks, which felt very safe.

’Compared to worrying about the professor calling on me, I’m more afraid of the female lead deliberately getting close,’ Jian Yu thought, feeling pathetic.

A wave of laughter erupted in the classroom, the sound a harsh mockery directed at Xu Jianjuan.

"I mean, how can she have zero self-awareness? Who would want to sit with a jinx like her?"

"She’s probably desperate. Got locked up for a whole night the day before yesterday. Maybe she thinks if she had a good friend, she could have called for help? She’s so ruthless, though, she wouldn’t care if her friend lived or died."

"I heard that Huang Yuan got a demerit for going after her yesterday."

"A demerit? Someone reported him? But I thought the security cameras there were hacked! Who?! Who secretly recorded it?!"

...

Jian Yu didn’t hear the rest. She covered her ears, but when that didn’t work, she put on her headphones and turned on some music.

She was unsettled by the changes in the female lead and disgusted by her attempts to drag her into the mess, but she didn’t think what everyone else was doing was right, either.

Powerless people can only think of self-preservation. And Jian Yu was famously powerless, an expert at playing deaf and dumb.

’That’s strange. In the original plot, Huang Yuan never got a demerit.’

’The security cameras on that path were hacked beforehand. The female lead had a miniature camera on her collar, but when she went back to the lab, someone threw water on her and broke it.’

’The camera was so cheap that the water wiped out even the saved footage.’

After a moment’s thought, Jian Yu figured it out. Last night, the female lead hadn’t gone back to the lab. She’d gone back to her dorm.

By avoiding the water-splashing incident, she had naturally managed to save the footage.

’It makes sense that the female lead would buy a camera to get evidence, and it’s normal that she would report it.’

Jian Yu scratched her cheek.

’The female lead’s personality and the plot so far are both quite different from what I remember.’

’Thankfully, the major plot points haven’t strayed. The female lead was locked in a dark room, so next up should be getting cold water thrown on her three times and having her desk filled with trash.’

Jian Yu briefly tried to think from the female lead’s perspective.

’It seems only those two events involve any real harm. The rest is just isolation, the silent treatment, and verbal abuse.’

’If it were me... isolation? I’d be the one isolating everyone else!’

Catching Xu Jianjuan’s malicious gaze out of the corner of her eye, Jian Yu frowned. Suddenly, she wasn’t looking forward to the female lead’s eventual "face-slapping" revenge plot anymore.

’Being resented by the female lead is not a good start.’

’Didn’t the System say that people only have a seven-second memory of anything a background character does?’

’So why is the female lead still fixated on me?’

’This doesn’t feel good. Maybe I should go hug one of the male leads’ golden thighs?’

Jian Yu was troubled. She only dared to run her mouth in front of the System or online; in real life, she had a bit of social anxiety.

The air in the classroom froze, and the atmosphere turned solemn.

Jian Yu took off her headphones and peeked up, keeping one eye on the situation.

It turned out F2 had entered the classroom.

Beast Souls, family background, status, money, grades—the F7 had it all.

But Jian Yu’s favorite was the cold, ascetic F2.

He wore a white uniform adorned with a purple brooch signifying the highest rank. His skin was fair, his eyes a deep blue, and his temperament was chilly, radiating a "stay away" indifference.

As his gaze swept lightly over the classroom, his eyes held no warmth, as if to say, ’All of you here are trash.’

Jian Yu liked this feeling of being utterly disregarded.

’Aloof, his heart locked away—so cool, so challenging.’

OOH! He sat down next to the female lead.

Right in the very seat Jian Yu had just been in!

Jian Yu exclaimed internally, ’That was a close one.’

’I almost had F2 pointing at my nose, telling me to move.’

The classroom was so quiet it was almost pitiful.

A strange way to describe it, but "pitiful" was the word that came to Jian Yu’s mind.

The students exchanged glances filled with confusion, surprise, disappointment, and gnashed teeth, as if suffering from a collective heartbreak.

Xu Jianjuan’s body went rigid. She wished she could get up and switch seats just like Jian Yu had.

She didn’t dare. She couldn’t.

If she actually did, she’d likely attract Sheng Yue’s attention even sooner.

Xu Jianjuan lowered her head, her eyes fixed on her book, but her mind was screaming, ’Doesn’t he like to sit alone? Why? Why? Why is he approaching me again!’

Sheng Yue was also baffled. He had followed a scent over, assuming it was coming from the female student beside him. Only after sitting down did he realize it wasn’t.

His gaze swept around the classroom before he coldly withdrew it.

’My Beast Soul’s nose is getting more and more useless.’

"Good morning, class!"

Professor Lin’s arrival dispersed the grim chill that Sheng Yue had brought with him.

His teaching was so witty and humorous that even a ’bad student’ like Jian Yu, who hated lectures, found herself engrossed.

After sitting quietly through most of the class, Jian Yu, who had skipped breakfast, couldn’t help but touch her stomach.

’My stomach hurts.’

’The female lead scared me so much I forgot to eat.’

"You all find the topic quite interesting, don’t you?"

Professor Lin’s words put Jian Yu on high alert.

’Such a familiar opening line.’

"I think we should have a student come up and participate."

’Just as I thought, he’s going to call on someone.’

Jian Yu glanced at the tense Xu Jianjuan, realizing it was time for the female lead to follow the script.

Knowing she had no part to play in this scene, Jian Yu’s eyelids drooped lazily.

’So hungry.’
