Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Ask Her

"Why would your family want to invest in a project like a hospital?"

Jian Yu had been curious about this the whole way.

Ling Yanzhi didn’t hide it from her. "My family doesn’t want to, but I do."

Publicly, his parents were in charge of the Ling Family, not him.

But he didn’t need their permission to do what he wanted.

His tone was cold. "What, is that so hard to understand?"

"A little." Jian Yu rested her hand on his shoulder, lost in thought.

Awakeners, the Half-awakened, and ordinary people.

Awakeners and the Half-awakened both possessed a Self-healing Ability and powerful spiritual power.

The only difference between the two was the presence or absence of a Soul Beast.

According to statistics, ordinary people and the Half-awakened each made up forty percent of the population, while Awakeners only accounted for twenty percent.

The world revolved around the nobility, serving the upper class, and the nobility mostly consisted of the Half-awakened and Awakeners who possessed a Beast Soul.

Technology had advanced, with Mechas, starships, and Space Buttons, but medical science seemed to have skipped over ordinary people entirely.

It ignored the life, aging, sickness, and death of ordinary people, instead researching medicines that enhanced the evolution of the nobility’s spiritual power and Soul Beasts.

In some respects, medical development was stagnant, because no one had thought about how to solve the complex illnesses and minor ailments of ordinary people.

"Ordinary people and the Half-awakened have almost no Threshold Devouring Period. And for low-Level Awakeners, the pain they endure during their Threshold Devouring Period is probably negligible."

Ling Yanzhi tightened his grip on Jian Yu’s calves, hoisting her up a little. "I’m investing in the hospital for myself. The rest is just incidental. I’m not as noble as you think."

Jian Yu raised her eyes. "To what extent am I useful to you?"

"My Threshold Devouring Period for this week has already passed, so I can’t answer that question." Ling Yanzhi was unusually serious. "This has nothing to do with me liking you."

Even if she didn’t believe him, Jian Yu had no choice but to accept it. "I was just asking. If you don’t know, I can always ask Sheng Yue later."

Ling Yanzhi considered it. "In Sheng Yue’s words, it would be ’instant and painless’."

He mused, "If you had met Pei Yin first, you’d probably be having your blood drawn by him right now."

Jian Yu: "..."

’Thanks, you can stop now.’

...

Aside from taking Jian Yu through the VIP entrance, Ling Yanzhi followed all the normal procedures for the hospital check-up.

Ignoring the doctor’s timid and nervous demeanor, it wasn’t as over-the-top as Jian Yu had imagined.

"There’s nothing wrong with your health, but you’ll need to maintain a more regular schedule from now on."

The doctor’s words clearly contradicted the information Ling Yanzhi had found.

But he quickly realized that Professor Lin’s medicine was taking effect.

Turning back, he glanced at Jian Yu’s well-behaved posture and put down the check-up report.

"I’ll bring her back for another check-up next month."

He didn’t elaborate. "Correct her vision. How long will the surgery take?"

Awakeners never got sick. People like them had never experienced a cold or a fever, so naturally, they wouldn’t be nearsighted either.

Ling Yanzhi remembered something. "How are those new vision correction machines that just came in?"

"Excellent." The doctor was an ordinary person, and he wanted to do something for ordinary people.

Hearing this, he couldn’t help but smile.

His face was usually so tense that the smile looked a bit awkward.

"The machines have been officially put into use, so the surgery can begin now. The staff is very familiar with operating the vision correction machines. It will take half an hour at most."

Jian Yu couldn’t help but ask, "Is it expensive?"

The doctor glanced at Ling Yanzhi and, thinking he was being clever, offered a discount. "It’s not too bad. Just five hundred thousand Star Coins."

"Are you trying to bankrupt my hospital?" Ling Yanzhi’s expression was listless. "You give her a fifty-percent discount today, and I’ll give you a broken bone tomorrow."

The doctor broke out in a cold sweat.

Jian Yu glanced sideways at him, not holding back at all. "You’re paying, right?"

"I never said you had to pay." Ling Yanzhi, with one leg bent, leaned against the wall and let out a soft "tsk."

"Good." Of course, Jian Yu knew she wouldn’t be the one paying. Wouldn’t that be a slap in the face to Ling Yanzhi?

She wasn’t one for false pride and wouldn’t say something self-important just to save face.

"Doctor, you heard him. Put it on his tab." Jian Yu raised her hand and pointed to the man beside her.

Ling Yanzhi was so exasperated he laughed, swatting her finger away and snorting through his nose.

Jian Yu reached out and appeasingly squeezed his knuckles, not daring to test his limits any further.

Having known him for less than a day, she didn’t feel like she had any leverage or confidence to spare.

Based on the fact that she was useful to Ling Yanzhi, she believed he wouldn’t get too angry.

This book was a massive stage for fame and fortune. To live well, you had to find your own way to survive, your own use.

Jian Yu thought to herself: ’I’ve transmigrated into a book anyway. I’ve got nothing to lose, so I might as well just go for it.’

"It’s too expensive," she said, letting go of Ling Yanzhi’s fingers. She wanted to act cute, but her expression was blank and her tone so flat that it came out sounding like a complaint.

The doctor looked like he was about to fall to his knees. "Our machines have undergone multiple improvements. I guarantee there will be no side effects after the surgery."

Ling Yanzhi nodded, signaling for him to go and prepare for the surgery.

The doctor bowed slightly and backed out of the room. "I’ll go arrange it right away."

The door closed.

Ling Yanzhi narrowed his eyes. "You should know, I’ve looked into you before. I remember your Star Coin balance was eight hundred sixteen thousand, six hundred and seventy-two."

It was more than enough to cover the surgery fee.

’He looked into it that thoroughly?’ Jian Yu coughed lightly. "A girl’s gotta live, right?"

She had to stay here for at least fifty more years. Was she supposed to have one surgery and then live on air for the rest of her life? No way.

Just as she was thinking this, a transfer of ten million Star Coins arrived on her Star Brain.

Jian Yu looked up, blinking her eyes. "Thanks, sugar daddy... oh, I mean, big shot."

Ling Yanzhi: "..."

He reached out, took off Jian Yu’s glasses, and twirled them casually. "The money from Sheng Yue. Give it back to him."

"How about I give you half?" Jian Yu tried to reason with him. "That was his consultation fee for me."

Ling Yanzhi lifted his eyelids, his gaze sharp. "Give me half?"

He tugged at the corner of his mouth, then lowered his eyes and opened his Star Brain.

’I didn’t expect Jian Yu to be so stingy,’ he thought, but still decided to transfer her another sum of money.

Jian Yu thought she’d hit his limit and couldn’t push back anymore, so she decisively backed down. "I’ll return it, I’ll return it."

While receiving money required a face-to-face interaction, returning it could be done by simply reversing the transaction.

Ling Yanzhi knew Jian Yu hadn’t added Sheng Yue as a friend, so he let the matter drop.

He smiled. "I was thinking of transferring you a bit more, but I didn’t expect you to be so generous, returning it just like that."

Jian Yu: "..."

’I’m not actually stingy.’

Ling Yanzhi raised an eyebrow. He had met too many people who pretended to be strong-willed just to get close to him, and he was tired of watching them put on an act.

In their circle, something like self-respect was the most worthless currency.

’All that back and forth, people acting tough without any real ability... it’s so boring.’

Ling Yanzhi was in a pleasant mood. He tapped his fingers on his bent thigh.

His handsome face, his unrestrained posture, his long, straight legs—in Jian Yu’s eyes, he was incredibly attractive.

She was finally starting to understand why Mary Sue novels were so popular.

Noticing Jian Yu’s gaze, Ling Yanzhi subconsciously straightened his back.

The atmosphere was a little strange. The doctor pushed open the door and swallowed awkwardly. "We can begin now."

Ling Yanzhi walked over to Jian Yu.

Just as he bent down, Jian Yu proactively took his hand.

’Why is he trying to carry me just a few steps? It’s embarrassing,’ Jian Yu thought.

「Half an hour passed quickly.」

Just as the doctor had said, when Jian Yu emerged from the Healing pod, her eyes felt fine, and her vision was exceptionally clear.

"Miss Jian seems to be looking for them. Her... data, does the hospital need to help merge it into the main... database?"

"Ask her."

Jian Yu couldn’t quite hear the conversation between the doctor and Ling Yanzhi.

Jian Yu walked toward Ling Yanzhi. "Ask me what?"
