Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Control Over One’s Own Desires
"As long as it meets the procurement standards I listed earlier, we can sign a long-term contract."
Martha nodded with a pained expression. She knew it was a thankless job, but for the sake of the Guild, she had to bite the bullet and do it.
By the time all the follow-up supply plans and personnel transfers were properly arranged, the wall clock was already pointing to two in the morning.
Necros waved his hand wearily.
"Alright, that’s enough. Everyone go get some rest."
Martha, as if granted amnesty, turned and left the office.
Homman gathered the documents on the table and had just reached the door when a voice from behind stopped him.
"Homman, wait a moment."
Necros sat in a large, high-backed chair, his entire figure swallowed by the shadows.
"Bring me all the detailed battle reports submitted by the Vanguard Team today."
Homman paused for a moment, then nodded and went to the records room next door.
A moment later, a thick stack of parchment was placed on Necros’s desk.
Only the old man remained in the office.
He did not immediately look through the battle reports. Instead, he opened a drawer and took out an exquisitely sealed document.
It was the list of interns sent from the Violet Academy.
Necros sat back down in his chair and, by the light of the Magic Lamp, carefully flipped through the pages.
Each page detailed a student’s information: name, background, proficient Spell schools, and the training recommendations given by their mentors.
His finger traced over the prominent surnames, his expression turning exceptionally cautious.
This wasn’t just a list; it was a minefield, each name a bomb that would detonate if not handled with care.
Before these "young masters and misses" arrived, he needed to find the most reliable teams for them to intern with, based on their abilities and personalities.
He had to both ensure their safety and make them feel that the internship was more than worth their while.
Among the entire headache-inducing list of interns, the name that gave Necros the most trouble was now lying quietly on the top of the stack.
Necros extended a finger and tapped it heavily on the name.
Cecilia Rosenthal.
The only daughter of the powerful Rosenthal Clan from White River Province, a prodigious young woman hailed by the outside world as the "Violet Pearl."
As for this girl, that old bastard Gideon’s objective was crystal clear.
He wanted the lead Necros held on a special Magic System Profession to serve as the foundation for the girl’s first Profession.
But in the "Mentor’s Training Recommendations" section at the bottom of the file, Gideon had densely scribbled his advice for his beloved student.
You could read the old fellow’s good intentions between every line.
He genuinely hoped Cecilia would be completely transformed by this internship, learning the kind of street smarts she could never get in an Ivory Tower.
’That old coot really knows how to make things difficult for me.’
Necros stroked his chin, his white beard swaying slightly with the movement.
Since his old friend had entrusted someone to him, he really had to carefully select a suitable mentor.
This joint clean-up mission actually had another purpose: to screen for the most suitable Adventurer teams for mentoring rookies.
Necros picked up a battle report from the stack, his eyes scanning the team composition before he shook his head.
’This one won’t do...’
This was a veteran team with a very established configuration.
But because they were too established, the team’s tactical system had become rigid.
A rookie like Cecilia would have no place if she joined them; she’d just end up as a protected mascot.
More importantly, once these people found out about her wealthy family background, they would absolutely put her on a pedestal.
That kind of excessive protection and fawning was not at all what his old pal wanted.
He mentally put a big X over this team, tossed the report aside, and picked up the next one.
’This one’s no good either.’
This team’s tactical style was extremely focused on efficiency and monetary gain.
While this was the most realistic survival principle for an Adventurer, for an only heir like Cecilia who was destined to inherit a massive family enterprise, this kind of profit-oriented value system was not a good starting point.
The first team an Adventurer joins has a decisive influence on their future conduct.
Just like himself and Gideon back in the day.
If they hadn’t met that upright and wise old captain to guide them, the two of them, in their youthful hot-headedness, would have likely died a meaningless death in some dark corner of an Underground City long ago.
So, this first guide had to be chosen with great care.
"The point of her learning here isn’t to kill Demons..."
Necros muttered to himself.
’Perhaps I shouldn’t limit myself to established Adventurer teams. Maybe I should broaden my search and look at the lone Free Adventurers?’
But most Free Adventurers were solitary and eccentric. The risks were too great, and they didn’t seem suitable for a high-born lady like Cecilia.
Necros sighed and continued to flip through the day’s battle reports with some frustration.
Until his eyes landed on a peculiar report.
It was personally written and submitted by Gareth, a Professional from the Underground City, and was accompanied by several supporting testimonies from other Adventurers.
The subject of the report had only a codename.
Raven.
"A little interesting."
After reading the report, a hint of interest appeared on Necros’s face.
He stood up, walked to the records room next door, and skillfully located and pulled the file for the Adventurer codenamed "Raven" from the shelf.
As he flipped through the past mission records, a clear portrait of the man began to form in Necros’s mind.
When he finished reading, he had only one thought.
’This is a person who is extremely afraid of death.’
He clearly had the strength to single-handedly wipe out an entire Goblin squad, but looking at his past mission records...
They were all gathering commissions.
Not a single combat-related subjugation quest.
"No... you can’t just say he’s afraid of death."
Necros re-examined the few mission records.
’This person is exceptionally good at suppressing his own greed.’
’Even though he has the ability to take on high-bounty clean-up missions, he’d rather earn small, safe, and steady money.’
’This absolute control over his own desires is precisely the rarest quality among young Adventurers.’
And from today’s battle report, it was clear the man wasn’t a real coward.
Gareth had specifically mentioned in his report that this person had charged back into the most dangerous front lines to rescue a friend in another team.
Otherwise, with his stealth abilities, perhaps no one would have ever discovered his true combat strength.
This showed that while the man was rational, he also possessed a commendable sense of loyalty deep down.
He could be counted on when it mattered most.
If a real accident were to happen, this kind of person would never abandon Cecilia as a burden and run away.
And what was even better...
