Chapter 18: Heroic Profession
Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Heroic Profession
Faced with Professor Gideon’s question, Cecilia stood before the desk and fell silent.
Her lively eyes lowered slightly, her fingers unconsciously twisting the lace trim of her skirt.
A long moment passed.
She gently shook her head.
Gideon looked at the girl before him, as exquisite as a porcelain doll, and sighed to himself.
He, of course, understood why the young woman was so conflicted.
The root of it all lay in her Talent—one that was enough to drive countless Mages mad with jealousy, yet had become incredibly awkward because of her lineage.
This conclusion had only been reached after dozens of Magic Power traceback tests, jointly conducted by several professors from the academy’s Truth System.
[Magic Tree (Sapling): Extraordinary Level Talent]
[Description: Your internal Magic Circuits are as exceptionally stable as the roots of the World Tree.]
[Effect: When you cast any Spell, you can output an additional 20% Magic Power beyond the Spell’s normal limit, converting it into a pure increase in power. Additionally, you have a 30% resistance to Magic Power backlash from failed castings.]
[Status: Growing]
This was why Cecilia was known as the "Violet Pearl."
In the world of Magic, every Spell model has a limit to what it can bear.
It was like filling a balloon with water; once you passed the critical point, not only would the power not increase, but the model would collapse.
The most terrifying result was a Magic Power Suicide Bombing, which would instantly blast the Caster to pieces by the rampaging elements.
But Cecilia was different.
Her Talent acted like a voltage stabilizer, allowing her to conjure an extra twenty percent of power out of thin air.
And this amplification applied to all systems of Magic.
The higher the Tier and the more destructive the Spell, the more terrifying this extra 20% boost became.
What was even more frightening was that this was only a "Growing" sapling.
According to the old scholars’ speculations, the final stage of this Talent was the Legendary Level.
At that point, it would evolve a new Trait called "Absolute Spellcasting Authority," meaning her Spells could never be interrupted by external forces.
She was, in essence, a magical cannon built for war.
That was why as soon as Cecilia enrolled, she was assigned directly to Gideon for specialized training.
However, it was a double-edged sword.
This astonishingly brilliant Talent had now become the biggest obstacle in her choice of Profession.
The crux of the problem was her bloodline.
She was the offspring of a human and an Elf—a Half-Elf.
In a Profession System with rigid requirements for blood purity, being of mixed heritage often meant pleasing no one.
"Are you still agonizing over the Magic Energy Bomber Profession?"
Gideon tapped his fingers on the desk, getting straight to the heart of the matter.
Cecilia bit her lip, not refuting him.
Magic Energy Bomber.
It was the initial Profession in Violet Academy’s recorded Profession System that best suited her Talent.
This Profession first appeared during the era of the third Hero and belonged to the chief Mage of that Hero’s party.
It maximized the use of Magic Power output, pushing a Caster’s destructive force to its absolute limit.
Unfortunately, it was a "human-exclusive" Profession.
The conditions for taking up the Profession had strict requirements regarding the purity of one’s human bloodline.
Meanwhile, the High Tier Professions from the Elf Race that suited her also required a Pure-blood Elf to qualify.
This left Cecilia, despite her top-tier Talent, in the awkward position of having no suitable Profession to choose.
Gideon stood up, walked over to the bookshelf behind him, and pulled out a hardcover book, placing it in front of Cecilia.
Professional Origin Discussion
"What is the true nature of a Profession? To this day, there’s no consensus on this question in the academic world."
"But two points are universally acknowledged."
"The first is great deeds, and the second is the progress of the era."
Gideon flipped to a certain page, pointed at the blurry illustrations, and spoke with earnest gravity:
"In the barbaric age when the first Hero appeared, the concept of a Profession didn’t even exist."
"The first powerful individuals simply tempered themselves continuously until their abilities reached a certain critical point, at which they naturally perceived an opportunity for sublimation."
"They recorded this process, and they became the very first Professionals."
"The choice was simple back then."
"When you became strong enough, the World Law would give you feedback. You could choose to accept a Profession or refuse it and continue honing yourself to find a more suitable path."
Gideon’s voice echoed in the quiet office.
"Later, as more and more Recorders emerged, their successors began to follow in their footsteps, researching and developing a wide variety of Profession Systems."
"For example, at first, there were only Mages. After learning a great deal of Knowledge about Molding Spells, someone might suddenly discover one day that they could become a Plastic Mage."
"This is a new Profession born from the advancement of Knowledge in that era."
Gideon paused here.
"In this world, the Levels of a Professional are clearly divided."
"From Level 1 to Level 20, there are four Tiers."
"Levels 1 to 5 are the Ordinary Level, Levels 6 to 10 are the Excellence Level, Levels 11 to 15 are the Extraordinary Level, and Levels 16 to 20 are Legendary."
"A Profession can be changed, and there’s no such thing as absolute superiority or inferiority between them."
"Even the most basic, common Professions can be upgraded. Upon reaching the Excellence or even Extraordinary Level, you can undergo a second class change."
Gideon looked at Cecilia and offered his final piece of advice.
"Many Rare Professions do indeed provide special bonuses, but that doesn’t mean common Professions are necessarily weak."
"Take the first group of Professionals, for example. You must have read about them in books. Scholars of later generations all agree that they were no weaker than the Professionals who came after them."
"And the Professions they took up are the most common ones in our lives today: Swordsman, Mage, Thief, Archer..."
"What determines a Professional’s strength is never the name of their Profession."
"It’s your personal Talent, your bloodline, the sweat you’ve put in, and the Skills you’ve mastered."
"Even if you just take up the most ordinary Profession of Mage."
"Combined with your Talent, you will still be Violet Academy’s sharpest sword."
"Do you understand, Cecilia?"
Faced with Professor Gideon’s earnest, painstaking advice, a bitter look appeared on Cecilia’s delicate face.
She shook her head gently, a gesture of refusal that took Gideon by surprise.
"Professor, I am my father’s only child."
Cecilia’s voice was soft, but her words carried a heavy weight.
Hearing this, Gideon first froze, then suddenly slapped his forehead.
"Oh, my memory."
The old man sighed in annoyance at himself.
"I’m sorry, child. I’m getting old and tend to forget things."
Cecilia’s full name was Cecilia Rosenthal.
Her father was the current Patriarch of the Rosenthal Clan, a family that held immense power in White River Province.
As the sole daughter, she was destined to one day take over the entire massive clan.
And the Rosenthal Clan had an ironclad rule that had been passed down for hundreds of years.
Before formally succeeding, every Patriarch had to change to an extremely special Profession.
In the knowledge system of Professionals, that type of Profession was a thousand times more special than even conventional Rare Professions.
The academic world called it a Heroic Profession.
