Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Chloe York Tells Reporters She Scored a 1
The reporter was standing right beside the principal, so her voice was faintly picked up by the microphone. Every student on the large athletic field heard her soft, clear words.
"It’s not Brooke York? Then why would the principal say it was her?"
"So who was it? Was there a mistake? The principal said Brooke York saved his son. Aren’t we talking about the same incident?"
The students began to discuss amongst themselves, completely baffled. Just then, Evan Shaw suddenly spoke up. "The reporter said the girl online doesn’t look like this. That means there must be a photo or video of her on the internet."
As soon as he said that, the students nearby who heard him all pulled out their phones, ready to search for it.
Brooke York had just set foot on the steps to the stage when she heard the reporter’s words. She froze, not daring to take another step up. ’I thought I might get exposed, but this quickly? This is so embarrassing!’
"You’re sure you’re not mistaken? It’s not her?" The principal was baffled too. ’Could it be that the person the reporters want to interview also happened to save a child today, and the incident with my son just wasn’t posted online?’
"That’s right. We found our way here because of a video online. The girl looks like this!" the reporter said, pulling out her phone. She found the video and handed the phone to the principal for him to see.
"Principal, take a look. Is this one of your students? And is the child she saved your son?"
Jordan Walton took the reporter’s phone. Seeing the child in the video, he said excitedly, "Yes, that’s my son." Just then, the camera panned to reveal the face of the girl who saved him. "It’s Chloe York!"
The students below also shouted, "It’s Chloe York! The one who saved the kid is Chloe York! There’s a video, everyone go search for it!"
In an instant, shouts rose and fell across the athletic field: "The one who saved him was Chloe York, not Brooke York!"
"Chloe York is so cool! She saved that kid so fast, and she even kicked the kidnapper!"
"Damn, Chloe York is the real one who does a good deed and doesn’t look for fame. I never would have thought!"
"Chloe, you’re amazing! I’m starting to worship you!" Stella Winters had also seen the video. She never imagined her best friend was so incredible!
"It was nothing!" Chloe said, a bit embarrassed. ’It’s all thanks to the Physical System!’
"Chloe, you’re famous! Right now, any video with you in it is getting hundreds of thousands of likes, and the number is still climbing!"
"And some official accounts with tens of millions of followers have posted the video and are talking about it! Chloe, you’re really famous now!"
"Wow, and lots of people are saying Chloe is so pretty, that she’s as beautiful as she is kind-hearted."
The students were all very excited. They had always thought Chloe York was a bad person, but they never expected her to do something good—and for it to earn her such widespread, positive fame.
"Principal, shouldn’t you invite Miss Chloe York up to the stage to be commended?" the reporter asked Jordan Walton, listening to the students’ excited cheers from below.
The look the reporter gave Jordan Walton was now tinged with suspicion. ’He was willing to let a random person take credit for saving his own son’s life. I have no idea what that other student’s relationship is to the principal, but she must be more important to him than his son’s actual savior.’
"Of course, of course! Miss Chloe York, please come up!"
Jordan Walton hadn’t expected to get it wrong. ’If only I’d had my wife confirm who it was before letting the reporters come for the interview.’ He never thought he would make such a blunder in front of the press.
He could feel the contempt from the reporter and the cameraman. He, too, was shocked that it was Chloe York. Based on her record, she was supposed to be a bad student. How could she have changed so drastically all of a sudden?
As Chloe York walked onto the stage, Brooke York, taking advantage of the fact that no one was paying attention to her while the principal was speaking, had already hurried off the athletic field.
The moment she got on stage, the reporter rushed over to greet her. Seeing Chloe York’s face, she knew she had the right person this time!
"Miss, what’s your name?"
"Chloe York!"
"Miss Chloe York, you are truly the future of our nation! You saved a child and a family! May I ask what year you’re in? And can you tell us what you were doing there this morning?"
"I’m a senior. I was there to eat breakfast."
"You have one of the most important moments of your life coming up soon. Weren’t you worried about getting hurt? After all, that was a kidnapper, and you’re just a student, a girl no less. You could have easily been abducted along with the child! Your life could have been ruined."
"I wasn’t thinking about all that at the time. I just heard someone shouting that a kidnapper had taken her child, so I went to save him."
"Weren’t you scared afterward?"
"No."
"It seems Miss Chloe York is a truly strong, kind, and helpful student! Do you think today’s events will affect you, now that the story of your heroic deed is spreading all over the internet?"
"No. The most important thing for me right now is to study hard and get into a good university."
"It sounds like Miss Chloe is a top student, then!" The reporter nodded in understanding. ’She’s a good student, she’s helpful... her future is limitless!’
"I’m not a top student, I’m a slacker. I only scored a one on the first mock exam," Chloe York said truthfully.
For a moment, the reporter couldn’t tell if Chloe York was joking or telling the truth. "Miss Chloe, you have quite a sense of humor!"
"I’m telling the truth, I’m not joking. I got a one on the first mock exam, but I will definitely score fifty or higher on the second one."
Hearing this from below the stage, her homeroom teacher felt a strange sense of unease. Before, she was certain Chloe York could never score above fifty, but now, she wasn’t so sure.
"Miss Chloe didn’t focus on her studies before, but it’s clear she is taking them seriously now. Therefore, as her principal, I also believe that Miss Chloe York can achieve a great score and get into a good university."
"Principal, since it was your child that Miss Chloe saved, have you thought about how you’re going to thank her?"
"Yes, I have. I will issue a school-wide announcement of praise and an official commendation document. We will also ceremoniously present Miss Chloe York with a silk banner. Furthermore, I will personally visit Miss Chloe’s home with my family to express our most sincere gratitude and respect in person."
"Alright, thank you Miss Chloe York and Principal for your time. We appreciate your cooperation today."
The cameraman beside the reporter had been recording the entire time.
"You’re welcome. It was our pleasure."
After the reporters left, a dean approached the principal and whispered, "Principal, several other news agencies are at the gate. Should we allow more interviews?"
"One is enough. Turn the others away for now. I don’t want the higher-ups coming after me if they disapprove."
"Understood."
Watching Chloe York’s departing figure, Jordan Walton was thinking about something else entirely. ’Should I give her the surveillance footage?’
After all, she had rescued his son from a kidnapper, and yet he had helped Brooke York bully her.
After the assembly ended, the students gradually returned to their classrooms, discussing the incident all the way.
Back in the classroom, the first thing everyone saw was Brooke York sitting at her desk. The atmosphere instantly became a little awkward.
