Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Brooke York Takes the Credit
"Is that so? Alright, I’ll make sure to thank her properly in front of the entire student body and faculty."
"Okay."
Just then, Holly Hughes’s phone rang. "Mom."
"You and Dad are at the house? Sunny and I are at school!"
"Alright, I’ll bring Sunny home now."
"Mom and Dad came over. They said they want to see Sunny, so I’ll take him home first. Make sure you thank her properly, you hear?" After hanging up, Holly Hughes walked over to Sunny, who was playing with a globe. She took his hand, not forgetting to remind Jordan Walton.
Jordan Walton nodded. Of course, he would definitely thank her properly.
"We’ll have to find some time. You, me, and Sunny should buy a gift and go to the York family’s home together to thank them again in person."
"Okay. You and Sunny be safe on your way home," Jordan Walton said, looking at his son with concern.
"Don’t worry. Sunny, let’s go home! Grandpa and Grandma are here!"
Sunny skipped along happily as he left with Holly Hughes.
Scholar System: [Congratulations, Host, for completing the mission. Wisdom +5, Memory +5.]
With the mission complete, Chloe York stopped reading aloud and switched to reading in a low voice.
The moment her voice quieted, her homeroom teacher rolled his eyes. ’She only kept it up for a little while, and now she’s slacking off again.’
When the morning reading session ended, Chloe York took out her workbooks and started on the practice problems. Her deskmate, Stella Winters, was no longer as shocked by this newfound diligence as she had been initially and simply focused on eating her snacks.
Soon, the bell rang for class. Everyone took out their textbooks and began to listen attentively. Chloe York eagerly absorbed the information, and by the end of the period, her book was filled with notes.
The bell for the end of class had barely rung when the homeroom teacher suddenly appeared at the classroom door. "Brooke, the principal wants to see you in his office. Hurry!" He left as soon as he finished speaking.
"Brooke, why would the principal want to see you?" Clara Bell asked, her tone laced with panic. She was worried the principal was summoning Brooke York because of the incident with the confession wall.
Hearing the panic in Clara Bell’s voice, Brooke York grew irritated. "I don’t know," she snapped before standing up and leaving the classroom.
The students whispered among themselves, wondering why the principal had summoned Brooke York to his office.
Afraid that what they’d done had been exposed, Clara Bell was on edge. When the next class began, she couldn’t even pay attention to the teacher. Her eyes were glued to the window, terrified that a school administrator would show up for her at any moment.
At first, Brooke York’s heart was pounding, too, afraid the principal was summoning her over the confession wall incident. But then she had a thought. ’I wasn’t the one who posted it on the confession wall. I just shared the photo with Clara Bell. She’s the one who posted it, so it has nothing to do with me.’
Before she knew it, she was standing outside the principal’s office. The bell had already rung, and with all the students in class, the hallways were quiet. Brooke York felt like she could hear her own heartbeat.
’If this really is about the confession wall, will the school punish me? I only just returned to the York family. Will Miles and Alice Cole be so disappointed in me that they’ll start favoring Chloe York again?’
She took a deep breath and raised her hand to knock on the door.
"Come in."
Jordan Walton’s voice came from inside, and Brooke York stepped into the office.
Jordan Walton was sitting at his computer. When he saw Brooke York arrive, he hurriedly stood up and gestured for her to take a seat. "Miss York, you’re here. Please, sit down."
Seeing the principal’s attitude, Brooke York felt certain. ’This definitely isn’t about the confession wall. But what else could it be that would make the principal call for me?’
"Principal, did you need me for something?"
"Miss York, I can’t thank you enough for saving my child!" Jordan Walton said, unable to hide his excitement as he thanked Brooke York with heartfelt words.
This sudden expression of gratitude left Brooke York momentarily stunned. Her brain seemed to short-circuit, and she was unable to react immediately.
Jordan Walton continued emotionally, "If it weren’t for you, I can’t imagine how I would have fallen apart. You saved our entire family."
Brooke York quickly replied, "Please, don’t say that. It’s what anyone would have done."
Hearing his words, Brooke York knew that Jordan Walton had definitely misunderstood something.
But after a moment of consideration, she decided there was no need to correct him. ’He’s not going to try and verify it like Miss Prescott, is he? After all, if Alice Cole hadn’t called me downstairs to greet them that day, the name on the engagement contract might have already been changed.’
’Right now, this is the perfect opportunity to make the principal owe me a favor.’
Seeing how mature and understanding Brooke York was, Jordan Walton felt relieved that he hadn’t agreed to let Chloe York review the security footage. ’Otherwise, I would have wronged my own savior,’ he thought. ’How could I possibly face her then!’
"Miss York, I plan to thank you in front of the entire school during the morning assembly."
’The whole school? No, that won’t work. The principal has the wrong person. It was most likely Chloe York who saved his son. Even if it wasn’t her, it must have been someone else from our school. If he makes an announcement in front of everyone, the truth is bound to come out.’
"Principal, helping others is its own reward. There’s no need for a public commendation in front of the entire school."
"I must insist. This is a valuable lesson for all our students. Besides, as a daughter of the York family, doing such a good deed... I believe announcing it to the entire school would be very beneficial for you." Jordan Walton was just short of spelling out his meaning.
Brooke York knew what he meant, but she wasn’t the one who saved the boy. ’I didn’t even see it happen! If I had at least witnessed the rescue and knew the details, I wouldn’t be so completely in the dark right now!’
"It’s fine, really. Principal, I appreciate the kind thought, but there’s no need. Besides, we’re taught to do good deeds without seeking recognition. My focus right now should be on my studies so I can get into a good university."
Since Brooke York was so insistent, Jordan Walton didn’t press the matter further. "Alright then. Please see when your parents are free. I’d like to bring my wife and son to your home to pay a formal visit to Mr. York."
"Okay." ’I’ll have to arrange for the principal’s family to visit when Chloe isn’t home,’ she thought.
"Alright, you can go back to class then."
Brooke York stood up. "I’ll be going then, Principal."
Jordan Walton also stood and walked Brooke York to the door. Feeling the principal’s respect, Brooke York was secretly delighted. ’I don’t know if it was Chloe York or some other student, but thanks for the leg up!’
He had just seen her off and returned to his desk when the dean of students rushed in, looking both anxious and excited. "Principal, there’s a crowd of reporters outside! They want to do an interview, saying a student from our school rescued a child from a human trafficker!"
’I can’t believe reporters are here,’ he thought. ’Now everyone will know our school produced a hero. As the principal, I might even get a commendation from the provincial authorities! Not to mention, student enrollment will surely skyrocket. We’ll have more applicants than we can handle.’
He remembered how Brooke York had declined the offer. ’But what if that was just her being modest, and she actually does want the recognition?’
"Send them to the main athletic field!"
