Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Brooke York Exposes the Truth
In the kitchen, Chloe York drank glass after glass of water.
After drinking a full two liters, Chloe York felt a noticeable surge of strength in her body.
’The Physical System’s tasks just take too long. The Scholar System and the Godly Rich System are much more straightforward.’
"Chloe York, what? You think drinking water is going to put out that fire in your heart?"
"You’re happy today." It wasn’t a question, but a statement of fact.
"I’m happy every day now that I’ve taken back the identity that belongs to me."
"No, I think you’re even happier today. Let me guess." Chloe York propped her chin on her hand, as if giving it serious thought. "Something must have happened today to make you exceptionally happy, and usually, anything that makes you happy is something bad for me."
"The bad things that happened to me today were getting yelled at by your mom and being falsely accused at school of juggling three guys."
"Congratulations, you guessed right." Brooke York made no attempt to hide her glee.
"You’re happy just seeing me get framed. Must be satisfying for you, huh?"
"Pretty much. But it’s not enough. What you’re going through now is nothing compared to the hardships I endured growing up!"
Chloe York nodded lightly. "You have a point. Your parents doted on me my whole life. I had the best food, the best clothes, the best of everything. And even though the truth is out now, I still got to enjoy the life of a rich girl for over a decade. Whether my life from now on is rich or poor, at least I didn’t have a miserable childhood."
The more Chloe York spoke, the darker Brooke York’s expression became. Her own childhood had been anything but happy. She had lived in a mud-brick house and worn tattered clothes. If the village’s Party Secretary hadn’t taken pity on her, taught her to read, and then discovered her natural talent, she would still be stuck in that remote mountain village today.
Her childhood was miserable, bleak, and seemingly without a future. And all the while, Chloe York had been living the life that should have been hers, taking everything from her. How could she not hate her?
"But I suppose I’m the one being wronged now. I know exactly who framed me, yet I’m powerless to do anything about it. This might be the only injustice I suffer in my entire life. She, however, doesn’t have the guts to admit it."
"Who says I don’t have the guts to admit it? I took the photo of you with Henry Ford and Evan Shaw. The three of you eating together. I photoshopped Stella Winters out. So what? I know you went to the principal asking to see the security footage, but he wouldn’t show you, would he? That’s because he doesn’t want to offend me. I’m the real heiress of the York Family now," Brooke York said, her voice dripping with smugness.
She hadn’t realized just how useful the title of ’York Family Heiress’ was. Even the school principal was siding with her.
"So you admit it?"
"Yes, I admit it. What can you do to me? Oh, Chloe York, Chloe York. I never imagined you were so resourceful. The second Ethan Prescott was out of the picture, you immediately set your sights on Evan Shaw and Henry Ford."
"Who I set my sights on is none of your concern. All that matters is that you’ve admitted to doing all this." A sly smile played on Chloe York’s lips as she walked out of the kitchen.
It took a moment for it to sink in, but Brooke York finally realized she had walked right into Chloe York’s trap and admitted to secretly taking the photo. Furious, she slammed her hand on the table, and a sharp pain shot up her entire arm.
"Sss..."
’Why? How did she suddenly get so smart? She used to be a complete idiot.’ Brooke York couldn’t wrap her head around it.
Back in her room, Chloe York pulled out her phone and played the recording. She let out a sigh of relief when she heard Brooke York’s entire confession, captured perfectly.
She had no intention of using the recording to show Miles York and Alice Cole what Brooke York was really like. After all, Brooke was their biological daughter. Besides, Miles only cared about personal gain, and Alice would probably applaud her own daughter for bullying Chloe.
What she needed was to prove her innocence at school. She knew that if she didn’t, then later in life, any little thing about her that surfaced online would be met with accusations from these same classmates, even if they were completely fabricated.
The next morning, the first thing Chloe York did after getting ready was drink water. After downing another two liters, she felt even stronger than she had yesterday.
She couldn’t imagine how powerful and full of energy she would feel after fourteen days!
After finishing her water, she went to the dining room. To her surprise, it was empty. No breakfast had been prepared.
"Miss Chloe," a maid who had watched Chloe grow up came out to inform her, "Mrs. Cole left early this morning with Mr. York and Miss Brooke. They said they were going for dim sum, so she told us not to prepare breakfast."
"Alright, I get it."
In that case, she would just eat out. Besides, it had been a long time since she’d eaten breakfast from a street vendor.
Since she hadn’t eaten breakfast at home, she left earlier than usual and missed seeing Evan Shaw’s car. She walked out of Avallon Estates to the bus stop. A bus arrived shortly after, and she boarded it.
Not far away, an all-black luxury car with windows too dark to see through was parked by the side of the road.
"Follow it," Adrian Kane commanded.
"Yes, sir." The driver started the car and followed the bus.
If Chloe York, sitting in the very back row, had glanced behind her, she would have seen a car following the bus at a steady, discreet distance.
Two stops before her school, Chloe York got off the bus and was immediately greeted by a bustling street market. There were vendors selling everything from fresh vegetables to breakfast.
"Boss, one order of zhajiangmian and a cup of soy milk." ’Ever since I crossed over, I’ve eaten well every morning, but I still crave this kind of food sometimes,’ she thought.
"Coming right up!"
The black luxury car remained parked by the road. Adrian Kane’s long, slender index finger tapped lightly against the leg of his suit trousers, his deep gaze fixed on the girl sitting under a stall’s awning outside the window.
The girl was perched on a plastic stool, surrounded by the calls of street vendors, passersby, and a potholed dirt road. Unidentifiable dark liquid trickled in small gutters on the ground. It would be no exaggeration to describe the surroundings as filthy and chaotic.
And yet, sitting right in the middle of it was the girl in her clean, white-and-gray school uniform. The steam rising from a pot of boiling soup next to her billowed in the rays of the morning sun, looking almost ethereal and making her appear even more pristine by contrast.
When the zhajiangmian arrived, Chloe York grabbed a pair of disposable chopsticks and dug in eagerly. ’I have to eat fast,’ she thought. ’School’s still a ways from here!’
Watching the girl heartily devour her noodles, Adrian Kane surprisingly felt his own appetite stir.
"Remember this stall. Come here tomorrow and buy an order of noodles and a cup of soy milk."
"Yes, sir."
The driver, watching his boss stare so intently at the girl, couldn’t help but curse him internally. ’Even though Adrian Kane is only in his early twenties, just a few years older than her, she’s still a high school student. Hitting on a high schooler... what an animal!’
Just then, a shrill voice suddenly shattered the calm of the street market.
"Help! My child is gone! A kidnapper stole my child!" a woman cried, looking around frantically, searching for her child.
