Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Abnormal Chloe York

"Find out which school uses a white uniform with a gray collar. Last night around 10 PM, there was a girl wearing it." Adrian Kane paused.

"And a boy. Find out who they are."

"Yes, sir."

’If it weren’t for the family business, he’d be a carefree college student right now, not some seasoned veteran of the adult world, forced to be constantly composed. One wrong move could mean his branch of the family would never recover.’

Since she had impressed her math teacher the day before, he would occasionally call on Chloe York to answer questions during class. This time, she could answer some of them without even relying on the Scholar System.

Brooke York didn’t bother Chloe York for the entire day. The other students also seemed to have forgotten about the previous night’s events; those who usually talked to Brooke continued to do so. After all, her status as the "real" heiress was undeniable.

Sometimes, however, Chloe would glance up and catch Brooke staring at her with a grim expression. It was, admittedly, a little unnerving.

When the last class ended, Chloe asked Stella Winters to go shopping with her.

"No way, Chloe, did I hear that right? You actually want to go shopping?" Stella Winters was so shocked she forgot all about the spicy strip she was eating. She quickly licked her fingers, wiped them on a napkin, then pressed the back of her hand to Chloe’s forehead to check for a fever.

"Nope, no fever!"

"What are you doing? I’m not sick. All I did was ask you to go shopping. What’s with the huge reaction?"

"Me, have a huge reaction?" Stella sat up straight and faced Chloe. "Forget about how you used to vanish after school to find Ethan Prescott. Just look at yourself these past few days, studying like you’re possessed—anytime, anywhere—like you’re planning to blow everyone away on the second mock exam. For someone as busy as you to ask me to go shopping... I honestly never saw it coming."

’Am I really that intense? I just study whenever I have free time, that’s all!’

"So, are you going or not?!"

"I’m going, of course I’m going! It’s not every day you’re willing to make time to go shopping with me. I wouldn’t miss it for the world."

Hopping into Stella’s family car, the driver took them straight to the liveliest street in the city.

"Come on, I’m treating you to bubble tea. No refusals."

Stella was actually about to refuse. Her own family was well-off, and Chloe was in such a difficult situation right now. But seeing Chloe’s insistent attitude, Stella relented. "Okay, then."

After getting their bubble tea, the two began to shop. They started at a boutique, where Chloe bought Stella a cute, fluffy hat.

"Chloe, you’ve really changed so much!" Stella truly felt like she was getting to know Chloe for the very first time.

"Well, people have to change. Come on, let’s check out that store." She had noticed a shop that specialized in all kinds of headphones and earbuds.

"Okay."

"Hey, Brooke, look! It’s Chloe York and her." Clara Bell and Brooke York were also out shopping, and a glance into a store revealed Chloe and Stella.

Since Alice Cole and her husband weren’t home, Brooke had also come out to shop and relax. After all, when they were home, she had to play the part of the perfect, obedient girl who rushed home after school to study.

"I can’t believe those two are out shopping today. I thought Chloe York was really trying to change. But the second your parents aren’t home, she’s back to her old ways."

"Come on, let’s go over there," Brooke decided instantly.

"Okay." Clara linked her arm through Brooke’s, and they headed toward the other two.

Noticing that Chloe was looking at Bluetooth earbuds, specifically black ones, Stella had a hunch.

"Chloe, you’re definitely not buying those for yourself, are you!"

"Right. It’s a gift," Chloe admitted without further explanation.

The moment she heard it was a gift, Stella got excited. "A gift! Let me guess who it’s for."

"Go on, guess."

"Is it for Ethan Prescott?" Stella’s first guess was Ethan. As her deskmate, she had a front-row seat to how infatuated Chloe used to be with him. Besides, black earbuds had to be for a guy.

"Nope. Guess again."

"Not Ethan?"

Chloe shook her head.

"Henry Ford?"

Chloe shook her head again.

If it wasn’t Ethan or Henry Ford, Stella couldn’t think of who else Chloe would be buying a gift for. Suddenly, she thought of the most unlikely person and asked tentatively, "It’s not... for Evan Shaw, is it?!"

"You got it."

’After all, Evan Shaw had helped her save that person last night. And when the man was choking her, it was Evan’s shout that made him let go. He’d also helped carry the guy to the side of the road. She’d gotten three thousand for it; the least she could do was show her appreciation.’

"Why would you be buying a gift for Evan Shaw? You’re not getting anything for Ethan, the guy you like. Our class monitor, Henry, helped you out with the class schedule—though, okay, he’s the monitor, so you don’t need to thank him too much. But with Evan, *you* were the one who helped *him* by taking him to the nurse’s office! Shouldn’t he be the one getting you a gift?"

Stella didn’t know what had happened the previous night. As far as she knew, Chloe’s only interactions with Evan were taking him to the nurse’s office and eating with him a couple of times.

"He helped me out in a big way, so I need to thank him. Anyway, what do you think of this pair?" Chloe picked up the black Bluetooth earbuds. She thought the color would suit Evan, and at over five hundred yuan, it was a respectable gift.

"They’re nice."

"Come on, let’s go pay." As she turned, she came face-to-face with Brooke York and Clara Bell.

"Stella Winters, I’d advise you not to get too close to *certain people*. You don’t want to be tainted by association," Clara Bell sneered. Seeing Chloe and Stella getting along so well made her stomach churn.

She had wanted to be a part of their group before, but while Chloe had been willing to talk to her, Stella wouldn’t even give her the time of day. ’Well, look at her now,’ Clara thought with satisfaction. ’Not only is Chloe not the York family’s heiress, she’s just an orphan.’

"Excuse me, but my family isn’t short on cash. I’m not like *some* people who have no self-respect and just latch onto anyone with money."

"Who are you talking about?!" Exposed, Clara flushed with shame and could only shout to cover her own humiliation.

"Stella, we’re all classmates. Is there any need for this?" Brooke stepped in, playing the peacemaker.

"She’s the one who started it, okay? Besides, there are plenty of other students in our class from normal families, and you don’t see them acting like total suck-ups, fawning over one rich person after another."

Stella might have seemed obsessed with snacks most of the time, but she had another hidden talent: she could be devastatingly sharp-tongued when she wanted to be.

"Come on, Chloe. We finally got a chance to hang out. Let’s not waste our time on them."

The two of them paid at the counter and left without giving Brooke or Clara a second glance.

Brooke noticed the Bluetooth earbuds Chloe had bought. They were black. ’Is that a gift for someone?’
