Chapter 35: Blood and Betrayal

The old rail yard sat on the eastern edge of the city like something the years had forgotten to finish erasing. Long stretches of rusted track cut through patches of weeds and cracked concrete. Most of the maintenance buildings were dark, their windows broken or boarded over. Only one structure near the far end showed any sign of recent use a low storage building with a metal door that looked newer than the rest of the frame.

Dmitri crouched behind a stack of old shipping containers with Anya at his side. Two of his men flanked them, silent and waiting. The night was cold enough that their breath showed faintly in the air.

"Two heat signatures inside," one of the men murmured, checking a small handheld device. "One near the back. One closer to the side entrance."

Dmitri nodded once. "We take the side. Quiet if possible. Alive if possible."

Anya glanced at him. "And if it’s not possible?"

"Then we adapt."

There was no more discussion after that. They moved across the open ground in a low, controlled line. The distance between the containers and the building felt longer than it was. Every step carried the risk of a light, a voice, or a shot from the dark. None came.

At the side door, Dmitri tested the handle. Locked. One of his men stepped forward with a compact tool and worked quickly. A soft click followed. Dmitri held up a hand, waited a full second, then pushed the door open.

The interior smelled of dust, oil, and stale cigarette smoke. A single portable lamp burned near the back of the room, casting a weak circle of yellow light. A man sat at a small table with his back partially turned. Another stood near a stack of crates, phone in hand.

The second man looked up too late.

Dmitri covered the distance fast. The phone hit the ground as the man reached for a weapon at his belt. He never got it free. Anya moved at the same time, cutting off the seated man’s path as he lunged toward a side exit. The struggle was short and ugly. A chair scraped hard across the concrete. Something metallic clattered to the floor.

When it ended, the second man was unconscious against the crates. The one who had been sitting at the table was on his knees, breathing hard, blood running from the corner of his mouth.

Pavel.

He looked worse than the last time Anya had seen him. Thinner. Less composed. The confidence he used to carry in meetings was gone, replaced by the sharp-eyed tension of a man who had been looking over his shoulder for days.

Dmitri stood over him, expression unreadable.

"You made it farther than I expected," he said.

Pavel spat blood to the side and gave a rough, humorless sound. "Not far enough."

Anya remained where she was, between him and the door. Her pulse was steady, but her focus was sharp. This was not just another enemy. This was someone who had sat at their table.

"You took the money," she said. "Why?"

Pavel’s eyes flicked to her, then back to Dmitri. "Because I saw where things were going. Because I know what happens to people who stay too long under a man like him."

Dmitri’s voice stayed quiet. "You were trusted."

"I was useful," Pavel corrected. "There’s a difference."

The words hung in the cold air of the storage building. Outside, the rail yard remained still. Inside, the space between the three of them felt much smaller than the room should have allowed.

Dmitri crouched down so that he was closer to Pavel’s eye level. There was no raised voice. No wasted movement. That almost made it worse.

"You didn’t just steal money," he said. "You sold something else. What was it?"

Pavel held his gaze for a moment, then looked away. Blood dripped from his lip onto the concrete.

"I needed insurance," he said finally. "The money alone wouldn’t have kept me alive. Not with you looking for me."

Anya’s stomach tightened. "What did you sell?"

Pavel’s silence lasted too long.

Dmitri’s hand shot out and gripped his jaw, forcing his face back up. "Answer her."

Pavel’s breathing turned uneven. "Information. About her. About the blood. About how valuable she really is."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Anya felt her fingers curl at her sides. "To who?"

"A broker," Pavel said. "He works between groups. Orlovs. What’s left of the Syndicate. Anyone with enough money and interest. I didn’t wait around to find out who bought it."

Dmitri released him and stood. For several seconds he said nothing at all. The control in his posture was absolute, but Anya could feel the violence contained just beneath it.

"You knew what that information could do," Dmitri said.

Pavel gave a weak, bitter smile. "I knew what staying would do too."

Anya stepped closer. "You sat in our house. You watched us. And when you ran, you tried to sell me on your way out."

Pavel looked at her then, really looked, and something almost like regret flickered across his face before it disappeared.

"It wasn’t personal."

"It was to me," she replied.

Dmitri glanced at his men. "Secure him. I want him conscious when we move."

As they moved in, Pavel let out a short breath that might have been a laugh. "You’re not going to kill me here?"

"No," Dmitri said. "Not yet."

Anya watched them restrain him. Her heartbeat was louder than she wanted it to be. The betrayal had always been about the money on the surface. Underneath, it had been about her. About the blood. About the fact that someone close enough to see their lives had decided she was a product worth selling.

When Pavel was finally pulled to his feet, Dmitri turned to her. His eyes searched her face in the dim light.

"Are you alright?"

She nodded once. "I will be."

He studied her for a second longer, then reached out and brushed his thumb lightly against the side of her wrist. The contact was brief, hidden from the others by the angle of their bodies.

"We finish this," he said quietly.

Anya met his gaze. "Yes."

Outside, the rail yard remained dark and empty. But the hunt had changed shape again.

Pavel had not only run.

He had lit a signal for every enemy still watching.
