Chapter 22: The Syndicate’s Shadow

Dmitri stood on the balcony of the master bedroom, shirtless, staring out over the glittering lights of Moscow. The cold night air did little to cool the rage burning inside him. Anya’s cure had worked, but the Syndicate’s threat now hung over them like a blade.

Behind him, Anya stepped out wearing only his black silk robe. She wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed her cheek against his broad back.

"You have not slept in two days," she said softly. "You cannot carry everything alone."

Dmitri turned and pulled her into his arms. For once, he did not immediately reach for her body. Instead, he simply held her, resting his chin on top of her silver hair.

"The Syndicate is not like Viktor or the Orlovs," he said quietly. "They are bigger. Older. They control politicians, corporations, and underground labs across Europe. If they want both Blood Carriers, they will not stop until they have you and Elena."

Anya pulled back slightly to look up at him. "Then what do we do?"

Dmitri’s silver eyes hardened with determination. "We prepare for war. But first, we need allies. Real ones."

The next morning, the war room was tense. Elena sat at the table looking exhausted but focused. She had spent the night analyzing the new virus strain.

"The Syndicate did not just want your blood, Anya," Elena explained. "They want to create a controllable version of Krov that works on anyone. With both of us, they could produce an army of super soldiers that no Bratva family could stand against."

Dmitri paced like a caged wolf. "We have twenty-four hours left before their deadline. We cannot give them either of you."

One of his most trusted lieutenants spoke up. "Pakhan, we have a possible contact. A man named Nikolai Sokolov. He used to work with the Syndicate but broke away years ago. He might have information on their weaknesses."

Dmitri nodded. "Set up a meeting. Neutral ground. Tonight."

Anya, who had been quiet, suddenly spoke. "I want to come with you."

Dmitri immediately shook his head. "No. It is too dangerous."

"I am not some fragile doll anymore," she said firmly, her crimson eyes flashing. "This is my blood they want. My life. I deserve to be part of the fight."

Dmitri stared at her for a long moment. Something shifted in his expression — pride mixed with dark possessiveness.

"Fine," he said finally. "But you stay by my side the entire time."

That night, the meeting took place in an old underground jazz club in the heart of Moscow. Nikolai Sokolov was a sharp, middle-aged man with cold calculating eyes.

"The Syndicate is not just another criminal organization," Nikolai warned. "They see themselves as the future rulers of this world. Blood Carriers like Anya and Elena are the key to their dominance. If they get both of you, Moscow will fall within months."

Dmitri leaned forward. "What do you want in return for helping us?"

Nikolai smiled. "Protection. And a share of the permanent Krov formula once you stabilize it."

Before Dmitri could answer, the club doors burst open. Syndicate agents flooded in. Gunfire erupted instantly.

Dmitri grabbed Anya and pulled her behind a table, shielding her with his body. Bullets shattered bottles and mirrors around them. He returned fire with deadly accuracy while his men fought back.

In the chaos, one Syndicate agent got too close. He grabbed Anya’s arm and tried to drag her away. Anya fought fiercely, slamming her elbow into his face. Dmitri shot the man in the head without hesitation.

"Stay close to me," Dmitri growled, pulling her against his side as they fought their way toward the exit.

They barely escaped. As their convoy sped away, Anya’s hands were shaking. Dmitri pulled her onto his lap in the back seat and held her tightly.

"You were brave tonight," he murmured, kissing her temple. "But this is only the beginning."

Anya looked up at him. "I am scared, Dmitri. Not just for me. For us."

He cupped her face and kissed her deeply. For the first time in many Chapters, the kiss was not immediately followed by sex. It was raw, emotional, and full of unspoken promises.

When they returned to the mansion, Dmitri took her straight to bed. He undressed her slowly, almost reverently, and made love to her with intense, passionate strokes. It was slower, deeper, and more emotional than their usual frenzied fucking.

"I will protect you with my life," he whispered as he moved inside her. "You are not just my obsession anymore, Anya. You are my future."

Anya clung to him as they came together, tears in her eyes.

But peace was short-lived.

At 3 AM, alarms blared across the mansion. The Syndicate had launched a direct assault.

Dmitri jumped out of bed, grabbing his guns. "Stay in the safe room with Elena," he ordered Anya.

This time, she did not argue.

As Dmitri rushed out to defend his empire, Anya watched the security monitors with a heavy heart.

The war had truly begun.

And the Syndicate was far more dangerous than anyone had imagined.
